Book excerpt: It was a lonely night and I had been sitting on a bench in Jack Asbury Square for more than an hour, waiting for the moon to rise over the small hill that sheltered part of my hometown. The streetlights added to the quiet of a dark night as the full moon finally arrived. It had been nearly 50 years since I left Bluefield and in the countless visits over the years, never once did I feel that part of me wasn’t still there. That night, I was in the park just to take a picture of the full moon. Instead, it took mine. For over an hour, keeping company with the full moon, I sat quietly on the park bench. In my mind I saw my youth played back to me. I saw the old Lee Theater and Saturdays with friends at the double feature, the buildings no longer there. The railroad tracks, the sad moments, many questions, and the little things that found a place in my heart to be protected and remembered. In my wanderlust I left my footprints on so much of our small town. This full moon, like an old friend that once walked with me is now shining on me, urging my imagination to be in free fall; telling me to open that invisible window, to see again what shouldn’t be lost, challenging me not to forget. Footprints are surprisingly easy to find. Following them is when the fun begins.

Book excerpt: The sequel to the award-winning Stepping on the Cracks. “Sometimes heart-rending, sometimes funny, Gordy Smith will prove memorable to all who meet him.”—Booklist (starred review) In Following My Own Footsteps, sixth-grader Gordy Smith comes to grips with the fear that he’ll turn out no better than his abusive father . . . With his father now in jail and one brother hospitalized, Gordy’s mother has no choice but to take the family to their wealthy grandmother’s house in North Carolina. There Gordy meets William, a boy who had polio and is now wheelchair bound. Though they become friends, Gordy’s plans to help William fail spectacularly. Matters only get worse when Gordy’s father is released from prison and his mother is poised to give him a second chance. Gordy must decide where he belongs—with his dysfunctional parents or with the grandma who is more than his match in toughness, in courage, and in love. “A cast of unforgettable characters inhabit this work, seasoned with WW II setting but utterly contemporary in its concerns. Hahn is in top form, proving through Gordy’s first-person narration that real love can triumph over all kinds of adversity, and often does.”—Kirkus Reviews “The complex characterizations, period setting and Gordy’s brave attempts to break a cycle of violence will hold readers’ interest.”—Publishers Weekly “It’s a timeless social issue really, in any era, of having a dysfunctional abusive parent . . . A very good story showcasing complex friendships, familial relationships, and inner conflict, all set in WW2 America.”—Cats and Fiction

Book excerpt: The Buddhapada is one of the most enigmatic artistic developments that has derived from the Buddhist faith. Literally 'foot (or feet) of the Buddha', its most common manifestation is that of a footprint, rendered in three dimensions in stone or metal, or less commonly on cloth or paper. The author traces the evolution of this pinnacle of early Buddhist art from its origins in north India over two millennia ago, through its long migration in time and space, to its present prominence throughout Buddhist Asia. This is the first survey of the Buddhapada.

What if she could sprint like a deer, or roar like a bear? Mimicking the footprints of each creature in the snow, she makes her way home to the arms of her moms. Together, the three of them imagine beautiful and powerful creatures who always have courage - just like Thuy.

It is risky, because our love can go unacknowledged, unrewarded and even rejected. But to become the fullest manifestations of ourselves, we must love others despite the risks. August 22 When you find yourself in a position of need, choose to allow others to experience the blessing that comes from giving, and let yourself be the tool through which that blessing comes. —From The Footprints Book of Daily Inspirations

Book excerpt: George Steinberger (1865-1904) lived a relatively brief life, and during those years he suffered much, as the reader will clearly discern in this book. However, God's grace taught and sustained this thirsty-hearted follower of the Lamb in the midst of many difficulties. Suffering can either make us or break us; Steinberger chose to take the former route. He lived by the truth of 1 Peter 5:10: "But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you." While this is a relatively small volume, it is packed with divine truth, written by a master of the devotional life. The book must be read and reread slowly, allowing the Spirit of God to penetrate one's heart with this biblically-based truth. As Christians, we are exhorted to "imitate the faith" of those worthies who have gone before us (Heb. 13:8). The faith of George Steinberger is worthy to be imitated, as he challenges us to "follow the Lamb wherever He goes (Rev. 14:4).Ole Hallesby, author of the classic volume "Prayer," said about this book: "I know of no devotional book that I have reread so many times. It is to an unusual degree filled with words of eternal life. Though many years of bitter suffering, its author learned to see the Savior as the Lamb of God and himself to walk the pathway 'in the footprints of the Lamb."

Book excerpt: Following digital footprints is a detective story with a difference. Different sections of a police force are investigating cases of hire car theft, credit card fraud and identity theft using traditional methods supported by ever more sophisticated IT systems. The criminals, meanwhile, become increasingly greedy but appear to be committing their crimes under the radar. The suspense builds, as the police build their case methodically and with the occasional element of luck. There are several twists and turns as the plot races towards a conclusion, and the reader can only wait and see whether the police or the criminals will succeed.David McCaddon has written an enthralling whodunnit by drawing on his many years of experience in law enforcement systems development working with police forces worldwide. The technical details are described with a light touch and this adds to the enjoyment of the novel. A satisfying read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When American forces arrived in Vietnam, they found themselves embedded in historic village and frontier spaces already shaped by many past conflicts. American bases and bombing targets followed spatial and political logics influenced by the footprints of past wars in central Vietnam. The militarized landscapes here, like many in the worlds historic conflict zones, continue to shape post-war land-use politics. Footprints of War traces the long history of conflict-produced spaces in Vietnam, beginning with early modern wars and the French colonial invasion in 1885 and continuing through the collapse of the Saigon government in 1975. The result is a richly textured history of militarized landscapes that reveals the spatial logic of key battles such as the Tet Offensive. Drawing on extensive archival work and years of interviews and fieldwork in the hills and villages around the city of Hue to illuminate wars footprints, David Biggs also integrates historical Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, using aerial, high-altitude, and satellite imagery to render otherwise placeless sites into living, multidimensional spaces. This personal and multilayered approach yields an innovative history of the lasting traces of war in Vietnam and a model for understanding other militarized landscapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Michael Green's successful "Who Is This Jesus?" and "My God", comes "Follow in His Footprints", a beautifully packaged inspirational book in the same popular format. Michael Green directs this book to readers who feel adrift and alone with a lack of purpose in the world. He stimulates their thinking about personal significance in a highly materialistic world. Readers are led to a most critical choice, whether or not to follow the "footprints" left behind by a Creator and Savior.
