Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October 10, 2017. The U.S. men’s soccer team loses in Trinidad and Tobago, and fails to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Winning soccer’s greatest prize never seemed more distant. Immediate fixes—a new coach, a revamped professional league, a commitment to coaching education—won’t put the USA in the global elite. The nation is too fractious, too litigious, too wrapped up in other sports, and too late to the game. In Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup: A Historical and Cultural Reality Check, Beau Dure shows what American soccer is really up against. Using hundreds of sources to trace more than 100 years of history, Dure delves into the culture that only recently lost its disdain for the global game and still doesn’t have the depth of soccer insight and passion that much of the world has had for generations. The difficulty isn’t any single thing—the mismanagement of failed leagues, the inability to agree on a path forward, the lawsuits that stem from an inability to agree, or the unique American culture that treasures its homegrown sports. It’s everything. And yet, Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup is ultimately optimistic. Dure argues that with the right long-term changes, the U.S. can build a soccer environment that consistently produces quality players, strong results, and a lot more fun on the international stage. Soccer fans and skeptics alike will find this a fascinating examination of America’s past, present, and future in the beautiful game.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Cologne Business School Köln, course: Preispolitik, language: English, abstract: For hundreds of years people have been highly affine to any kind of sports. Thousands of people regularly watch sports events online and offline and in society the topic of a team‟s or an individual‟s performance is always passionately discussed. Taking a look at Europe the most popular sport is football. Mughai (2016, p. 13) elaborates that football – or sometimes called soccer to avoid interchanging with American football – is globally ranked first in terms of popularity. Supporters that are very passionate about their team are visiting the huge football stadiums week by week. As the capacity of a stadium is limited sometimes fans are even purchasing their entrance tickets weeks or months ahead of the event itself. Especially the German Bundesliga has been facing an enormous interest growth within the last years resulting in an average of 42.609 visitors per match day making the league the most visited one in Europe. (DFL, 2015, p. 22f) Similar to the ever-growing popularity of sports, the costs are rising. This is caused by mounting player salaries, increased transfer fees and other operational expenses. (Drayer, Lee & Shapiro, 2012, p. 184; Breuer & Kemper, 2015, p. 142) Sport clubs therefore need to steadily open up and augment their sources of revenue: match day revenues, advertising, broadcasting, transfer fees and merchandising. (DFL, 2015, p. 26f) Some of these revenue streams can be actively influenced by the Bundesliga clubs whilst others are hard to affect. One of the determinants that can be modified is ticket pricing. The objective of this Master Thesis is to explain the prevailing pricing strategy in the German Bundesliga and to present innovative, value-based pricing approaches which can be tested. Creating an understanding of the fans‟ willingness to pay and factors having impact on the purchase decision making process, a gap in research is supposed to be filled. In this Master Thesis the author aims to find sufficient, relevant, reliable and empirically proven answers to the following research questions: 1) Why have innovative value-based pricing strategies like dynamic pricing not yet been implemented in the German Bundesliga? 2) To what extant are fans willing to pay different prices depending on dynamic factors? 3) What determinants need to be taken care of when changing the prevailing pricing strategies of Bundesliga clubs?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents accounts of economic and psychological analyses of association football (or “soccer” as it is popularly known in the USA). As football is widely accepted to be the world’s most popular sport, the case for scientific investigation of its characteristics is self-evident. As the contributions to this book demonstrate, the game of football offers an ideal opportunity to empirically investigate a wide range of broad issues, for example: behavioural decision-making; judgmental forecasting; motivation; game-theoretic models of strategic choice; competition and labour markets. Are teams more likely to concede a goal after having just scored? Does the team going first in a penalty shoot-out have an advantage? Should goal-keepers dive or stay put for penalty kicks? Do referees make decisions consistently? Why do fans like their teams? What factors influence the career of footballers? How well can experts predict football matches? How accurate are prediction markets? How does the stock-market react to match outcomes? These questions and others are addressed in this book. A particular focus is the investigation of popular conceptions—and misconceptions—about football. Of interest to psychologists, behavioural economists and football enthusiasts with an analytic approach to understanding the game, this book brings together contributions from a range of academic disciplines and will stimulate further research into football and the intriguing insights into behaviour it offers. Book excerpt: "A beautiful story, expertly told." -- Per Mertesacker, Arsenal defender and member of the German national team, winners of the 2014 World Cup Estáo do Maracan", July 13, 2014, the last ten minutes of extra time in the World Cup Final: German forward Mario Gö jumps to meet a floated pass from Andr' Schü cushions the ball with his chest, and in one fluid motion volleys the ball past the onrushing Argentine goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. The goal wins Germany the World Cup for the first time in almost thirty years. As the crowd roars, Gö looks dazed, unable to comprehend what he has done. In Das Reboot, Raphael Honigstein charts the return of German soccer from the dreary functionality of the late 1990s to Gö's moment of sublime, balletic genius and asks: How did this come about? The answer takes him from California to Stuttgart, from Munich to the Maracan", via Dortmund and Amsterdam. Packed with exclusive interviews with key figures, including JüKlinsmann, Thomas Mü Oliver Bierhoff, and many more, Honigstein's book reveals the secrets of German soccer's success.

However, the Bible also describes God as One who declares the end from the beginning; and so the Old Testament was written to conform to the eternal mind of God and what is to come. The New Testament fulfils and gives the true meaning to the foreshadowing and prophecy in the Old Testament. What happened to the children of Israel on their journey to the promised land, according to Apostle Paul, happened to them as examples. If the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt to the promise land is properly decoded, it will reveal the roadmap which is laid out for mankind.

Book excerpt: From one of basketball's foremost experts in the field of analytics, a fascinating new perspective on how to watch and think about the game. At its core, the goal of any basketball team is relatively simple: take and make good shots while preventing the opponent from doing the same. But what is a "good" shot? Are all good shots created equally? And how might one identify players who are more or less likely to make and prevent those shots in the first place? The concept of basketball "analytics," for lack of a better term, has been lauded, derided, and misunderstood. The incorporation of more data into NBA decision-making has been credited—or blamed—for everything from the death of the traditional center to the proliferation of three-point shooting to the alleged abandonment of the area of the court known as the midrange. What is beyond doubt is that understanding its methods has never been more important to watching and appreciating the NBA. In The Midrange Theory, Seth Partnow, NBA analyst for The Athletic and former Director of Basketball Research for the Milwaukee Bucks, explains how numbers have affected the modern NBA game, and how those numbers seek not to "solve" the game of basketball but instead urge us toward thinking about it in new ways. The relative value of Russell Westbrook's triple-doubles Why some players succeed in the playoffs while others don't How NBA teams think about constructing their rosters through the draft and free agency The difficulty in measuring defensive achievement The fallacy of the "quick two" From shot selection to evaluating prospects to considering aesthetics and ethics while analyzing the box scores, Partnow deftly explores where the NBA is now, how it got here, and where it might be going next.
