Book excerpt: Every Saturday afternoon, 5.8 million people around the world settle down to see how their team will get on. But this isn’t the team they support. It’s THEIR team. They have spent hour after hour assessing injuries, swapping subs and tweaking formations. Because when the day is done and the scores are in, they want to be able to look in the mirror and say, ‘THAT TRIPLE CAPTAIN CALL WAS AN ACT OF GENIUS!’ Welcome to the obsessive world of Fantasy Football, where managers will do anything to succeed. David Wardale – writer for the UK's number one Fantasy Football site, Fantasy Football Scout – meets previous winners to discover how they beat millions to the crown. He reveals the leagues where failure involves outright humiliation and discovers just how low some managers will go to claim a psychological advantage. Along the way, he finds Saudi sheikhs, stats professors, most of Norway and a member of one of the biggest pop bands of all time, all of them united by their unflinching desire for Fantasy Football greatness.
Book Synopsis African Soccerscapes by : Peter Alegi
Download or read book African Soccerscapes written by Peter Alegi and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-14 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Accra and Algiers to Zanzibar and Zululand, Africans have wrested control of soccer from the hands of Europeans, and through the rise of different playing styles, the rituals of spectatorship, and the presence of magicians and healers, have turned soccer into a distinctively African activity. African Soccerscapes explores how Africans adopted soccer for their own reasons and on their own terms. Soccer was a rare form of “national culture” in postcolonial Africa, where stadiums and clubhouses became arenas in which Africans challenged colonial power and expressed a commitment to racial equality and self-determination. New nations staged matches as part of their independence celexadbrations and joined the world body, FIFA. The Confédération africaine de football democratized the global game through antiapartheid sanctions and increased the number of African teams in the World Cup finals. In this compact, highly readable book Alegi shows that the result of this success has been the departure of huge numbers of players to overseas clubs and the growing influence of private commercial interests on the African game. But the growth of women’s soccer and South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 World Cup also challenge the one-dimensional notion of Africa as a backward, “tribal” continent populated by victims of war, corruption, famine, and disease.

Book Synopsis The Numbers Game by : Chris Anderson
Download or read book The Numbers Game written by Chris Anderson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moneyball meets Freakonomics in this myth-busting guide to understanding—and winning—the most popular sport on the planet. Innovation is coming to soccer, and at the center of it all are the numbers—a way of thinking about the game that ignores the obvious in favor of how things actually are. In The Numbers Game, Chris Anderson, a former professional goalkeeper turned soccer statistics guru, teams up with behavioral analyst David Sally to uncover the numbers that really matter when it comes to predicting a winner. Investigating basic but profound questions—How valuable are corners? Which goal matters most? Is possession really nine-tenths of the law? How should a player’s value be judged?—they deliver an incisive, revolutionary new way of watching and understanding soccer.
Book Synopsis Autonomy of Sport in Europe by : Jean-Loup Chappelet
Download or read book Autonomy of Sport in Europe written by Jean-Loup Chappelet and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the impact that successive court rulings have had on the organisation of the sports movement in the past 15 years, the autonomy of non-governmental sports organisations has become a highly topical concern in Europe. It is also closely related to the issue of governance, the subject of previous Council of Europe studies. The Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) decided to explore the concept of autonomy in greater depth by studying the conceptual, political, legal, economic and psycho-sociological aspects of the subject. This study was carried out at the request of the EPAS by the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP) on the basis of a questionnaire sent to public authorities in charge of sport and to national and international umbrella sports organisations. In addition to an analysis of the data obtained, documents produced by public authorities and sports organisations on this emerging issue are presented. This study contributes to a better understanding of the concept of autonomy and offers a clear picture of the issues involved.
Book Synopsis Following His Glory by : Solomon Aggrey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Bible begins with the words, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." However, the Bible also describes God as One who declares the end from the beginning; and so the Old Testament was written to conform to the eternal mind of God and what is to come. The New Testament fulfils and gives the true meaning to the foreshadowing and prophecy in the Old Testament. What happened to the children of Israel on their journey to the promised land, according to Apostle Paul, happened to them as examples. If the journey of the children of Israel from Egypt to the promise land is properly decoded, it will reveal the roadmap which is laid out for mankind.
