Book excerpt: The first book to tell the story of the Soviet airline, featuring previously unseen ephemera Despite the borders of the USSR being closed to the majority of its population, Soviet citizens were among the world's most frequent flyers. Following the 1917 Revolution, Vladimir Lenin made the development of aviation a priority. Assisted by advertising campaigns by artists such as Alexander Rodchenko, Soviet society was mobilized to establish an air fleet--from the very beginning of the USSR through to its demise in 1991, Soviet aviation flew its own unique path. This book unfolds the story of Soviet air travel, from early carriers like Deruluft and Dobrolet to the enigmatic Aeroflot. Organized like an Air Force, with a vast fleet of aircraft and helicopters, Aeroflot was the world's biggest air carrier of passengers and cargo, responsible for a wider range of duties than any other airline. In an era when it was still common to smoke on board, the Aeroflot emblem appeared on cigarette packets, matchboxes and many other everyday goods. Aeroflot publicity alerted domestic passengers to new destinations or proudly presented the introduction of faster, more comfortable aircraft, while colorful advertising enticed Western travelers to use Aeroflot's international services. Aeroflot: Fly Soviet uses this ephemera to illustrate a parallel aviation universe that existed for 70 years. It pays tribute to generations of aircraft engineers, designers, pilots, ticket sellers, flight dispatchers, air traffic controllers, ground handlers and flight attendants, who jointly created this remarkable chapter of Soviet civil aviation history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many successes of the Soviet Union were inaugural space flight—ahead of the United States—and many other triumphs related to aviation. Aviators and cosmonauts enjoyed heroic status in the Soviet Union, and provided supports of the Soviet project with iconic figures which could be used to bolster the regime’s visions, self-confidence, and the image of itself as forward looking and futuristic. This book explores how the themes of aviation and space flight have been depicted in film, animation, art, architecture, and digital media. Incorporating many illustrations, the book covers a wide range of subjects, including the representations of heroes, the construction of myths, and the relationship between visual art forms and Soviet/Russian culture and society.

Book excerpt: Tony Anderson set out in the summer of 1998 to walk through Georgia. He wanted particularly to visit the Georgian mountain tribes - Tush, Khevsurs, Ratchuelians and Svans - to discover if they shared a common mountain culture, and to test the old idea of the Caucasus as an impenetrable barrier from sea to sea. From Azerbaijan to Svaneti, Anderson found communities where the old customs and beliefs still triumphantly survive, despite years of Communist oppression and the terrible uncertainties since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Throughout his journey Anderson refers back to many other visits to Georgia, to the politics of independence, to the war in Abkhazia and Ossetia, to the civil war and Shevardnadze's accession to power, to the history of these people at one of the great crossroads of the world. It remains an abiding mystery that Georgia has managed to survive at all, devastated time and again by the vagabond hordes from the steppes and torn between the mighty empires that struggled over it. But survive it has with a vibrant culture still intact and, in the mountains, still deeply connected to its ancient ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is the ultimate bestseller in Georgia and is based on one of the most tragic events of the 1980s when seven young people hijacked an airplane in an attempt to escape from the Soviet Union. It was a reckless move at that time when even to think about escape was forbidden. The Soviet government sentenced most of them to death. The public reaction was split. Some people would consider the young rebels as terrorists, whilst for others they were heroes. Flight from the USSR allows the reader to closely follow the leading characters, and learn more about their motivations and aspirations. Jeans were a symbol of freedom at the time, as it was as rejected to wear as the idea of a free world. The novel has been adapted for stage and is one of the most successful plays at Georgian Free Theater. Quotation "The book is not a canonization. Turashvili describes, colors and romanticises, but he does not condemn or glorify his characters anywhere. Flight from the USSR is a beautiful novel and it deserves a large readership." (c) 8Weekly "He is confident and the storytelling style of Turashvili is sober and direct. The reader does not remain untouched by his story." (c) Literair Nederland

Book excerpt: The first manned space flight in history was accomplished on April 12, 1961, when the Soviet spaceship Vostok (East) orbited the earth and made a safe landing. The first man in space was 27 year old Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin, a citizen of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. After successful launching in the multi-stage space rocket the satellite ship, having attained orbital velocity and separated from the last stage of the carrier-rocket, had begun free orbital flight round the earth. According to preliminary data, orbital period of the spaceship is 89.1 minutes; it minimum distance form the earth's surface (perigee) is 175 kilometers and its maximum(apogee), 302 kilometers; the orbit is inclined to the equator at 65°4'. Together with its pilot, the spaceship weighs 4,725 kilograms excluding the weight of the last stage of the launching rocket. Two-way radio communication has been established, and is being maintained, with the spaceman, Major Gagarin. The ship's short-wave transmitters are operating on 9.019 megacycles and 20.006 megacycles, and on 143.625 megacycles in the ultra short -wave band. The condition of the space pilot during flight is being observed by means of radio telemetering and television systems. Major Gagarin, the space pilot, withstood the period of acceleration satisfactorily and at present feels quite well. The systems enduring the necessary life conditions in the cabin of the spaceship are functioning normally. The flight of the Vostok with Major Gagarin on board continues...

One important theme explored is the degree to which the Soviet space programme was oriented towards military capabilities. The book concludes that the degree of military involvement was indeed high.
