Book Synopsis Hemingway Cutthroat by : Michael Atkinson
Download or read book Hemingway Cutthroat written by Michael Atkinson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-07-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were no bullfights in 1937 Madrid, just bombs, freedom fighters, journalists, and plenty of corpses. Ernest Hemingway, covering the Spanish Civil War for the American press, came looking for stories and danger, and found something else: a friend murdered amid the ruins. With a new novel stirring in his head and his veins pumping with booze, Hemingway sets out to find who killed José Robles Pazos, a bureaucrat in the Popular Front, and who's covering it up. There is, after all, nothing like risking death in a war zone if it means living fast, nailing the bastards, and avoiding a deadline. With the writer John Dos Passos at his side, Hemingway wades into the darkness, discovering that his old WWI buddy is no mere casualty of war---but victim of something far more terrible. Boisterous, bare knuckled, and stewed to the gills, Hemingway Cutthroat captures the writer at the height of his career and in a Europe teetering on untold cataclysm, struggling to find out not just for whom, but why the bell tolled.
Book Synopsis Hemingway Deadlights by : Michael Atkinson
Download or read book Hemingway Deadlights written by Michael Atkinson and published by Minotaur Books. This book was released on 2009-08-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty, literate, and action-filled debut, Hemingway Deadlights catches the famed author in his later years, battling to solve the injustices in a flawed world. It is 1956 and Hemingway has spent much of the year at his home in Key West, hiding from tourists and autograph hunters. But a friend's sudden death rouses Papa from his idyll. To say that the cause of death is suspicious is to put it lightly. It's not every day that a part-time smuggler is impaled on a harpoon. "Neatly captures the personality and uproarious lifestyle of an American literary icon. ... A mystery sure to please Hemingway aficionados." - Publishers Weekly

Book Synopsis Ghosts in the Machine by : Michael Atkinson
Download or read book Ghosts in the Machine written by Michael Atkinson and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Limelight). Looking back on a century that witnessed the emergence of motion pictures to become, almost immediately, a dominant cultural force in our lives, this penetrating and provocative book argues that "movies (like cathedrals) cannot help but display the subconscious impulses oftheir society." From D.W. Griffith to the Marx Brothers to film noir, "what are conceived and consumed as innocent pop movies ... are in fact manifestations of wild horror, superstitious ignorance, fatalistic dread and bigoted savagery."
Book Synopsis Sex and Sexuality in Modern Screen Remakes by : Lauren Rosewarne
Download or read book Sex and Sexuality in Modern Screen Remakes written by Lauren Rosewarne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex and Sexuality in Modern Screen Remakes examines how sexiness, sexuality and revisited sexual politics are used to modernize film and TV remakes. This exploration provides insight into the ever-evolving—and ever-contested—role of sex in society, and scrutinizes the politics and economics underpinning modern media reproduction. More nudity, kinky sex, and queer content are increasingly deployed in remakes to attract, and to titillate, a new generation of viewers. While sex in this book refers to increased erotic content, this discussion also incorporates an investigation of other uses of sex and gender to help a remake appear woke and abreast of the zeitgeist including feminist reimaginings and ‘girl power’ make-overs, updated gender roles, female cast-swaps, queer retellings, and repositioned gazes. Though increased sex is often considered a sign of modernity, gratuitous displays of female nudity can sometimes be interpreted as sexist and anachronistic, in turn highlighting that progressiveness around sexuality in contemporary media is not a linear story. Also examined therefore, are remakes that reduce the sexual content to appear cutting-edge and cognizant of the demands of today’s audiences.

Each of the films is discussed at length with detailed credits and critical commentary. There are six appendices: 1990s cliches and conventions, 1990s hall of fame, memorable ad lines, movie references in Scream, 1990s horrors vs. The X-Files, and the decade's ten best. Book Synopsis T&T Clark Companion to the Bible and Film by : Richard Walsh
Download or read book T&T Clark Companion to the Bible and Film written by Richard Walsh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first decades of the twenty-first century saw a resurgence of the biblical epic film, such as Noah and Exodus: Gods and Kings, which was in turn accompanied by a growth of biblical film criticism. This companion surveys that field of study by framing it in light of significant and recent biblical films as well as the voices of key biblical film critics. Non-Hollywood and seemingly “non-biblical” films also come under investigation. The contributors concentrate on three points: “context”, focusing on the 'Bible in' specific film genres and cultural situations; “theory”, applying theory from both religion and film studies, with an eye to their possible intersections; and “recent and significant texts”, reflecting on which texts and themes have been most important in 'biblical film' and which are currently at the fore. Exploring cinema across the globe, and accompanied by extended introductory essays for each of the three sections, this companion is an important resource for scholars in both film and biblical reception.
Book Synopsis Analyzing Christmas in Film by : Lauren Rosewarne
Download or read book Analyzing Christmas in Film written by Lauren Rosewarne and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film plays a vital role in the celebration of Christmas. For decades, it has taught audiences about what the celebration of the season looks like – from the decorations to the costumes and to the expected snowy weather – as well as mirrors our own festivities back to us. Films like It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone have come to play key roles in real-life domestic celebrations: watching such titles has become, for many families, every bit as important as tree-trimming and leaving cookies out for Santa. These films have exported the American take on the holiday far and wide and helped us conjure an image of the perfect holiday. Rather than settling the ‘what is a Christmas film?’ debate – indeed, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are discussed within – Analyzing Christmas in Film: Santa to the Supernatural focuses on the how Christmas is presented on the deluge of occasions when it appears. While most Christmas films are secular, religion makes many cameos, appearing through Nativity references, storylines involving spiritual rebirth, the framing of Santa as a Christ-like figure and the all-importance of family, be it the Holy family or just those gathered around the dining table. Also explored are popular narratives involving battles with stress and melancholy, single parents and Christmas martyrs, visits from ghosts and angels, big cities and small towns, break-ups and make-ups and the ticking clock of mortality. Nearly 1000 films are analyzed in this volume to determine what the portrayal of Christmas reveals about culture, society and faith as well as sex roles, consumerism, aesthetics and aspiration.

Book Synopsis Romeo and Ethel by : William Shakespeare
Download or read book Romeo and Ethel written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a perfect gift for any woman named Ethel. "Romeo and Ethel" is a modified version of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". In this version, the main character is not Juliet, but Ethel. The book has a beautiful cover and font. There are 10 pictures inside the book. We also have versions with other names. "Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; Whose misadventur'd piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury their parents' strife. The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love, And the continuance of their parents' rage, Which, but their children's end, nought could remove, Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage; The which, if you with patient ears attend, What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend. This is a story about Romeo and Ethel."
