Book excerpt: NREL has developed advanced processes for CdTe solar cells, but because of the temperature limitations of conventional soda lime glass, many of these processes have not been transferred to manufacturing. Corning is developing high temperature substrate glasses that are believed to be manufacturable and will lead to lower $/watt modules costs. The purpose of this CRADA is to evaluate these glassesin the advanced NREL processes. In addition, the CRADA seeks to develop manufacturable processes for transparent conductive oxide layers based on cadmium stannate.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This CRADA involves analyses on a variety of CdTe and CdTe-PV related materials, test structures, and solar cells produced at FSLR or NREL. Single-crystal (sx) material will be primarily MBE grown and provided by FSLR. Joint activities are focused on establishing the appropriate quality metrics as a basis for high performing sx devices and to study the dopability of the material. Polycrystalline (px) materials will be provided by NREL, FSLR, or fabricated jointly. Px activities are focused on the characterization of performance limiting mechanisms including bulk defects, grain boundaries, and the hetero-interface. A combination of growth, characterization, and theory will be applied. Analysis will include techniques that are well established in CdTe research at NREL (e.g., LIV/DIV/CV, AS/DLTS, LTPL, TRPL) as well as techniques that have not been widely applied to the PV part of CdTe technology (e.g., PCD, CL, uPL, SE).

This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite remarkable efficiency improvements at the cell and module level, thin-film CdTe PV suffers from a significant voltage deficit compared with the ideal. The proposed solution is to build cells with fully depleted absorbers and with energy barriers front and back to direct electrons and holes in appropriate directions. Combined with minimal interfacial recombination, this approach, which is similar to the successful silicon HIT cells, circumvents the need for higher lifetimes and carrier concentration to achieve higher voltage, Colorado State is particularly well-positioned to the address the depleted absorbed architecture. It has robust single-vacuum closed-spaced-sublimation deposition chamber, currently being enhanced with new sources for CdTe alloys and grading. It has made reasonable-efficiency cells with absorbers as thin as 0.3 um, it has demonstrated electron reflection at the rear of the absorber with a continuous CdMgTe layer, it has replaced CdS with MgZnO, which has several advantages including tunable band offsets, and it has achieved 16.8% efficiency. It also has a mature suite of measurement equipment for cell evaluation and the experience to effectively analyze its results for refinement in cell fabrication. Several healthy collaborations will continue within the CdTe community.

Book excerpt: Team Asoleyo is transforming the utilitarian rectangular grid that dominates the visual style of standard solar panels by re-designing solar cells' silver contact grid using principles of symmetry, rhythm, and line. Our designs use well-established manufacturing equipment, techniques, and materials, achieving similar manufacturing costs but far superior aesthetic effect- without the need for additional layers or occlusion. This project will test new decorative PV Cell front contact designs, individually and interconnected within modules, for their performance characteristics.

Book excerpt: At present, most PV materials are fabricated by vacuum technologies. Some of the many disadvantages of vacuum technology are complicated instrumentation, material waste, high cost of deposition per surface area, and instability of some compounds at the deposition temperature. Solution-based approaches for thin-film deposition on large areas are particularly desirable because of the low capital cost of the deposition equipment, relative simplicity of the processes, ease of doping, uniform deposition on a variety of substrates (including interior and exterior of tubes and various nonplanar devices), and potential compatibility with high-throughput (e.g., roll-to-roll) processing. Of the nonsilicon solar photovoltaic device modules that have been deployed to date, those based on the n-CdS/p-CdTe is a leading candidate. Two features in the optical characteristics of CdTe absorber are particularly attractive for photovoltaic conversion of sunlight; (a) its energy bandgap of 1.5 eV, which provides an optimal match with the solar spectrum and thus facilitates its efficient utilization and (b) the direct mode of the main optical transition which results in a large absorption coefficient and turn permits the use of thin layer (1-2 um) of active material. Thin films of CdTe required for these devices have been fabricated by a variety of methods (e.g., vapor transport deposition, vacuum deposition, screen printing and close-spaced sublimation). Electrodeposition is another candidate deserves more attention. This project will focus on delivering low-cost, high efficiency electrodeposited CdTe-based device.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centre for Organic Photonics & Electronics (COPE) at UQ has been successful in acquiring funding from the Australian Center for Advanced Photovoltaics (ACAP), which is the Australian partner of the Australia-US Institute for Advanced Photovoltaics (AUSIAPV). NREL is a key partner in AUSIAPV (along with other US research institutions (ASU, Sandia NL, LBNL, Stanford, Georgia Tech and UCSB). NREL will collaborate with COPE to advance the science and technology of organic materials for solar cell applications. COPE has significant programs in the development and understanding of new materials for organic optoelectronic applications and, in particular, for thin film bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells and Organic Photodiodes (OPDs). NREL has significant established research programs in all aspects of organic photovoltaic technology and has well-developed expertise in the area of materials characterization, photocarrier transport measurements as well as device fabrication, scale-up and stability. This collaboration will combine the expertise of the two institutions to work towards demonstrating the scalability of organic materials for BHJ and OPD applications by measuring the fundamental properties of the materials as a function of processing and evaluating their performance and stability in photovoltaic devices under simulated illumination conditions. Currently, both NREL and UQ have individual organic material development and processing efforts and have independently demonstrated several prototype materials and device architectures as promising candidates for organic solar cells and OPDs. This CRADA will align these efforts building upon strengths of the two institutions to further design and demonstrate materials and device architectures to advance organic BHJ solar cells and OPDs. It should also be clearly noted that we foreshadow possible expansion of collaborative research activities between COPE and NREL, which currently lie outside the scope of the current statement of work, which will be amended as required by mutually executed written modifications to this CRADA.

Book excerpt: This CRADA will focus on the development of organic-based solar cells. Key interfacial issues in these cells will be investigated. In this rapidly emerging technology, it is increasingly clear that cell architecture will need to be at the nanoscale and the interfacial issues between organic elements (small molecule and polymer), transparent conducting oxides, and contact metallizations are critical. Thus this work will focus on the development of high surface area and nanostructured nanocarpets of inorganic oxides, the development of appropriate surface binding/acceptor molecules for the inorganic/organic interface, and the development of next-generation organic materials. Work will be performed in all three areas jointly at NREL and Konarka (with their partner in the third area of the University of Delaware). Results should be more rapid progress toward cheap large-area photovoltaic cells.

Book excerpt: Currently High Concentration Photovoltaic (HCPV) terrestrial modules are based on the combination of optic elements that concentrate the sunlight into much smaller GaAs space cells to produce electricity. GaAs cell technology has been well developed for space applications during the last two decades, but the use of GaAs cells under concentrated sunlight in terrestrial applications leaves unanswered questions about performance, durability and reliability. The work to be performed under this CRADA will set the basis for the design of high-performance, durable and reliable HCPV terrestrial modules that will bring down electricity production costs in the next five years.
