Download or read book Fishers of Men written by Adam Elenbaas and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of memoirs like Daniel Pinchbeck's 2012 and Jim Carroll's The Basketball Diaries, Adam Elenbaas's Fishers of Men chronicles his journey from intense self-destruction and crippling depression to self-acceptance, inner awareness, and spiritual understanding, through participation in mindexpanding-and healing ayahuasca ceremonies in South America and beyond. From his troubled and rebellious youth as a Methodist minister's son in Minnesota, to his sex and substance abuse-fueled downward spiral in Chicago and New York, culminating in a depressive breakdown, Elenbaas is plagued by a feeling of emptiness and a desperate search for meaning for most of his young life. After hitting rock bottom at his grandfather's house in rural Michigan, a chance experience with psychedelic mushrooms convinces him that he must change his ways to achieve the sense of peace that he has always desired. Several subsequent psychedelic experiences inspire him to embark on a quest to South America and take part in a shamanic ceremony, where he consumes ayahuasca, a jungle vine revered for its spiritual properties. Over the course of nearly forty ayahuasca ceremonies during four years, Elenbaas discovers the truth about his own life and past, and begins to mend himself from the inside out. Fishers of Men is the gripping, heartbreaking, and yet ultimately uplifting story of the power to transcend one's past.
Book Synopsis Fishers of Fish and Fishers of Men by : Tyler R. Yoder
Download or read book Fishers of Fish and Fishers of Men written by Tyler R. Yoder and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metaphor is a hallmark of Classical Hebrew poetry. Some metaphors, such as “Yhwh is king” or “Yhwh is warrior,” play a foundational role. The same does not hold for metaphors from the fishing industry. Because they had access to only two major freshwater sources, archaeological research demonstrates that this industry did not play a major socioeconomic role in ancient Israel. Fishing has nevertheless made a substantial contribution to prophetic and wisdom literature. All metaphors manifest reality, but given the physical circumstances of a largely agrarian, nonmarine society, what does the sustained presentation of fishing metaphors in the Hebrew Bible communicate? Examining the use of fishing images in the Hebrew Bible is a formidable task that demands an open mind and a capacity to mine the gamut of contemporaneous evidence. In Fishers of Fish and Fishers of Men, Tyler Yoder presents the first literary study devoted to the fishing images used in the Hebrew Scriptures as well as in the Mesopotamian textual records. This calls for a penetrating look into cultural contact with Israel’s neighbors to the east (Mesopotamia) and southwest (Egypt). Though nearly all fishing metaphors in the Hebrew Bible carry overt royal or divine connotations that mirror uses well-attested in Mesopotamian literature, this comparative analysis remains a largely untapped area of research. In this study of the diverse literary qualities of fishing images, Yoder offers a holistic understanding of how one integral component of ancient Near Eastern society affected the whole, bringing together the assemblage of disparate materials related to this field of study to enable scholars to integrate these data into related research and move the conversation forward.

Book excerpt: The Gospel can be considered a Manual of Prayer, a letter written by the Holy Spirit to you. But God's Word doesn't live in a book. It comes alive when you pray about It. It is not about getting to know what the 'Historical Jesus' did two thousand years ago, what He said "back then"; Jesus Christ is not 'back then' anymore, He is alive, and is longing to talk to you.Taking the Gospel of the day, the iPray provides a commentary that can be a trigger for an authentic and personal conversation with Jesus. That time of prayer spent with Jesus is like a 'cooking pot' in which you blend the Words and scenes of Jesus' life, found in the Gospel, together with your daily life, your worries, your family and friends, all heated up by the fire of the Holy Spirit.'iPray with the Gospel' is not a ready-made meal you can just throw in the microwave, as if they were some prayers that you read and that's it. It is more like a personal recipe that only you can cook with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Book Synopsis Fishers of Men - The Gripping True Story of a British Undercover Agent in Northern Ireland by : Rob Lewis
Download or read book Fishers of Men - The Gripping True Story of a British Undercover Agent in Northern Ireland written by Rob Lewis and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishers of Men is the true account of secret operations in Northern Ireland carried out by the British Army's most clandestine unit. It tells the unique story, through Rob Lewis's own extraordinary experiences, of an essential instrument in the fight against terrorism, that of covert intelligence gathering. The men and women who work in this field are a special breed who undertake hazardous risks with unflinching tenacity and professionalism - the price of negligence is high, and the need for secrecy must be preserved even at the expense of personal relationships. The sheer determination and single-mindedness required to achieve selection to this secret world is graphically described, as well as how, against seemingly impossible odds, the operators of the FRU managed to persuade terrorists and their close associates to turn informer. The methods the unit used to target, recruit and handle their contacts, how they protected their informants, and the terrifying life their agents led are all told by an agent handler, using many of his cases to illustrate the sharpness, intelligence (and sense of humour) essential to the job. Fishers of Men fills a gap in the available information about the secret war against terrorism in Northern Ireland. It is a gap that has so far remained largely unexplored - until Rob Lewis's informative and explosive book.

Book Synopsis We Are Fishers of Men by : Brenda Bell
Download or read book We Are Fishers of Men written by Brenda Bell and published by Tate Pub & Enterprises Llc. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fishers were trained and sent out two by two. They first preached that men should repent (change their ways). They cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. When they learned how to fish for men, they were so pressed with people that they had to hide because they didn't even have enough time to eat. Fishers of men deny themselves, take up their crosses (the inconvenience to themselves), and follow after Him. They are not afraid to do the things he did. When we read the four gospels, we should keep in mind one thing: everything that Jesus said and everything that He did was teaching us to be Fishers of Men." Brenda Bell presents the New Testament with a fresh perspective--everything that Jesus said and did was to teach his disciples to be fishers of men. When Jesus called Simon and Andrew, and later James and John, to come and follow him, he began their education on exactly how to be fishers of men. Join this master class on evangelism taught by Jesus himself. You'll discover that we are called to a higher purpose on this earth--"We Are Fishers of Men."

Drama puts both together and prepares the audience with a vivid sermon illustration that kindles their anticipation of the pastor's sermon. The majority of these mini-dramas run 3-5 minutes in length. Each introduces the theme of the gospel lesson in the Cycle B lectionary.
