Book excerpt: Social media’s presence has increased in the lives of college students in the generations following its creation roughly two decades ago. It is important for us to examine its effects on our behaviors and motivations for activity participation, especially those that alter our health. Fitness content, or “fitspiration”, is a popular subcategory of social media that is of particular interest, due to its large followings across various social media platforms, as well as its proposed effects on various health-related behaviors. A sample of nearly 370 Health Sciences students a large, Midwestern university completed a printed survey regarding their interaction with fitness content on social media, exercise behaviors (frequency, length, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), interest in fitness), and motivation towards exercise. Participants were categorized and analyzed according to their interaction with fitness content on social media. Significant differences in exercise frequency were found between those that only view fitness content and those that post and view fitness content, as well as between those that have no interaction with fitness content and those that post and view fitness content. There were also significant differences in length of exercise sessions between those that have no interaction with fitness content and those that view fitness content, as well as those that only view fitness content and those that post and view fitness content. Moreover, there were significant differences in interest in fitness across those that have no interaction with fitness content and those that only view it, those that have no interaction and those that post and only view it, and those that only view it compared to those that post and view it. There were no significant differences found in motivation towards exercise across groups. This study depicts the significant impact that passive interaction with fitness content on social media has on behaviors and emphasizes the importance of being conscious of what one views on social media networking sites. Moreover, college students in this study are more extrinsically motivated than intrinsically motivated to exercise. This trend towards extrinsic motivation toward exercise is not a cause for concern in itself but may lead to effects that are less desirable compared to if this group were intrinsically motivated for exercise, such as lower levels of exercise adherence. As social media continues to play a monumental role in the lives of college students today, it is essential for us to consider its impacts on health and well-being related behaviors, as social media’s presence is expected to increase in the lives of generations to come.

Book excerpt: Research on the intersectionality of exercise, motivation, barriers, functional disability, psychological factors, and CI in undergraduate college students is limited. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate relationships between exercise behaviors, exercise motivation, barriers to exercise, functional disability, and psychological factors (id est, anxiety, depression) amongst healthy undergraduate students and those with chronic illnesses (CI). Exercise behaviors, motivation, and barriers were compared across health status (CI vs. healthy) and the predictive capacities of functional disability and psychological factors were evaluated. Undergraduate students (N=200) completed online surveys (Qualtrics). Statistical analyses performed included Hotellings T2, multiple linear regression, and multinomial logistic regression. Findings displayed no differences between health status groups on motivation, but the CI group reported significantly more barriers. Functional disability and depression significantly positively predicted barriers to exercise for both groups. Functional disability significantly inversely predicted physical activity (PA) for students with CIs and significantly positively predicted PA for healthy students. Depression was found to significantly inversely predict PA for healthy students. Anxiety displayed no effect on PA or barriers for either the healthy student or those with CIs. Lastly, students reporting higher functional disability or depression displayed statistically increased odds of motivation from external regulation as opposed to internal regulation. Universities could use this research to implement programs aimed at increasing PA through teaching providers Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques. Practitioners could use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to benefit students in changing their perceptions about barriers to exercise and functional disability.

This is especially important in college students where habits are established that can carry over into the rest of an individual’s life. Based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Organismic Integration Theory (OIT), a correlational study was done using college freshman (N = 175; mean age = 18.5 years; SD = 0.5 years) to determine the relationship between exercise selfefficacy and exercise motivation. Moderate-to-strong relationships (r = -.60 - .85) were found between the three dimensions of exercise self-efficacy and more autonomous forms of motivation. This study shows that there is a relationship between exercise self-efficacy and more autonomous forms of motivation for exercise although due to the nature of the study causality cannot be inferred.

Book excerpt: Recent research has shown a significant decrease in physical activity (PA) during college, therefore putting students at a higher risk of health complications (Calestine et al., 2017). Gourlan and colleagues (2019) suggested that a two-step intervention that first targets the motivational factors to increase PA intentions and then volitional factors to translate intention to PA behavior may be effective at increasing PA intention and behavior. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of this two-step intervention among college students. It also aimed to integrate a participant's desire to change using the Transtheoretical Model (DiClemente et al., 1991) and measure PA objectively. Sixty-three college students were recruited from a lifetime physical activity walking course and assigned to one of four conditions: motivational intervention only, volitional intervention only, combined motivational plus volitional intervention, or control. Subjective PA and the Theory of Planned Behavior constructs (i.e., attitude, perceived behavioral control, subjective norm, and intention) were measured at baseline, mid-intervention (week 4), and post-intervention (week 7). There was no significant main effect of condition on intention or PA behavior. A significant main effect of time on intention emerged, revealing a decrease in intention from baseline to post-intervention. The time by condition interaction effect was not significant. Finally, there were no significant differences in intention or PA behavior between participants in the contemplation or preparation stage of the transtheoretical model, compared to those in the precontemplation, action, or maintenance stages. These results suggest that a two-step intervention is unsuccessful at increasing exercise intention and behavior in college students. Limitations of this study include a small sample size and participants meeting PA recommendations at baseline, limiting potential effects of the interventions. Further research investigating the efficacy of the two-step intervention is warranted in a sedentary population.

Book excerpt: Physical activity levels decrease dramatically from childhood to adulthood, and only a minority of adult Americans meets the minimum recommendations for regular exercise. It therefore appears important to intervene with young people to encourage them to continue leading an active lifestyle rather than settling into a sedentary lifestyle common among adults. The first step towards encouraging such activity is to understand the reasons that some individuals adopt an active lifestyle while others do not. The present study examined young adult women entering their first year of college and evaluated the ability of a number of individual psychological variables to predict exercise behavior over several months. The variables explored included those comprising the Theory of Planned Behavior, past exercise behavior patterns, personality characteristics, physical self-efficacy, and change in emotional affect after a single bout of moderate exercise.The participants in this study were asked to walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes (for the purpose of measuring affective change with physical activity), self-report their physical activity over three days, complete a number of questionnaires, and, two to five months later, again self-report their recent exercise behavior. Path analysis was used to evaluate the predictive value of these variables for current and future exercise behavior. Eighty-two women provided data at time 1 and 53 provided data longitudinally. Results indicated that, cross-sectionally, intention and past exercise behavior predicted current exercise behavior most strongly. Longitudinally, in part due to low statistical power, many of these relationships diminished and only current exercise behavior and affect change after walking were independent predictors in the confirmatory model; an exploratory model suggested that personality and intention could also be a significant direct independent predictor of behavior. These differential cross-sectional and longitudinal findings suggest that the women may have been less tuned into internal predilections early in their freshman year, but that these predispositions became more influential later. Past behavior predicted later behavior as expected, but over a limited time span. These findings raise intriguing questions about the changing nature of the early college experience and an individual's changing awareness of environmental versus internal cues for behavior.

Book excerpt: Students are entering college heavier than ever before and some are gaining weight faster than the general population. Weight studies have been conducted, but are limited in scope about how behavior related choices are made. This study was an effort to determine weight stability and to explore the influences of eating and physical activity habits, among undergraduate students attending Oregon State University (OSU) during the 2004-2005 school year. The study methodology included: Phase One, involving anthropometric and demographic data collection on students enrolled in a class entitled 0́−Lifetime Fitness0́+ (HHS 241) during fall quarter 2004 and Phase Two, exploring influences upon behavior via focus groups from a subset of Phase One participants. Phase One revealed that students gained weight (M=2.62 pounds, SD = 5.42 pounds) during the first eight weeks of fall term. Seventy percent of students had a normal weight BMI classification at the start of the term. By the tenth week, the percentage had dropped to 68% and the incidence of obesity and overweight rose from 25% to 28%. The Phase 2 focus groups discussions revealed that most college students could describe a healthy lifestyle, but may fail to practice such. Lack of time and money, as well as other priorities were all sighted as reasons for not practicing healthy behaviors. Those that were most successful in practicing healthy eating and exercise habits believed that success in one habit led to success in the other. Intrinsic motivation was most likely to lead to healthy behaviors. The strongest influences on food choice were time, money, and the perception of availability and quality of food. The most frequently discussed motivator for exercise was enjoyment. Discussion about eating healthfully seemed to reflect their perception that it was more challenging than being physically active. Friends and roommates were both positive and negative influences, and constitute the primary support system for college behavior choices. Life skills and discipline are needed to practice healthy lifestyle behaviors and only a few participants appeared to be equipped with these. Most participants made statements that suggest a lack the rational decision making skills and maturity needed to consistently adhere to a healthy lifestyle. Some participants struggled with devising strategies to manage their eating and exercise behaviors. This preliminary study revealed some outcomes that need further exploration. Students need a clearer and more accurate understanding of what makes a food healthy. Strategies to encourage intrinsic motivators for eating and exercise, providing peer reinforcement for exercise and finding strategies to build exercise into the busy schedule of a college student are areas needing further exploration.
