Book Synopsis The Ties that Bind by : John Erik Fossum
Download or read book The Ties that Bind written by John Erik Fossum and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern states - and novel multinational polities such as the European Union - have to contend with greater degrees, and more complex forms, of diversity. What elements keep complex, «post-national», political entities together? What are the ties that bind people together in a world where they cannot rely on the safety of established national identifications (if they ever could)? This collection of essays by leading political scientists, philosophers and legal academics from Canada and Europe provides a transatlantic dialogue on the ways in which complex states (such as Canada) and non-states (the EU) may broach the modes of difference and diversity that confront them. Authors engage in insightful «diagnoses» of contemporary forms and modes of diversity, as well as critical appraisals of a number of normative responses meant to answer these challenges. These responses range from «reasonable accommodation» and multinationalism to cosmopolitanism. They include the recognition of «post-national», «multinational» or «deterritorialised» democracy and constitutional patriotism, as well as plural or «denationalised» citizenship.
Book Synopsis The Renaissance of Native Spirituality by : Judy Binda
Download or read book The Renaissance of Native Spirituality written by Judy Binda and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on her personal search for lifes meaning, Judy Bindas anthropological research on spirituality led her to write this ethnography. Without Gods presence in her life, she would never have been able to overcome the many challenges she faced in her dual journey to grow both as a human being and a spiritual being. In the first part of this work, through her encounters, Judy learns that her own spiritual path was mirrored in that of her contributors. She engages her applied research in the second part of her study in integrating traditional medicine and healers into Western clinics, in order to find solutions to improve the wellness of people and encourage Native spiritualism as a way of life. These ethnographic studiesconducted with those who walk their Native spiritual journey as spiritual seekers and the traditional medicine people and healers who have the ability to heal through spiritual guidance, traditional practices, and medicinesoffer richness and benefits for those seeking different paths to wellness.

Book Synopsis Identities in Transition by : Paige Arthur
Download or read book Identities in Transition written by Paige Arthur and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many societies, histories of exclusion, racism and nationalist violence often create divisions so deep that finding a way to deal with the atrocities of the past seems nearly impossible. These societies face difficult practical questions about how to devise new state and civil society institutions that will respond to massive or systematic violations of human rights, recognize victims and prevent the recurrence of abuse. Identities in Transition: Challenges for Transitional Justice in Divided Societies brings together a rich group of international researchers and practitioners who, for the first time, examine transitional justice through an 'identity' lens. They tackle ways that transitional justice can act as a means of political learning across communities; foster citizenship, trust and recognition; and break down harmful myths and stereotypes, as steps toward meeting the difficult challenges for transitional justice in divided societies.

Book Synopsis Developing Governance and Governing Development by : Diane Smith
Download or read book Developing Governance and Governing Development written by Diane Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, far too many discussions about Indigenous governance and development are dominated by accounts of disadvantage, deficit and failure. This book paints a different international picture, testifying to Indigenous peoples as agents of governance innovation and successful developers in their own right, telling stories in their words, from their own experiences and countries. From Indigenous voices, we hear alternative concepts and measures of effectiveness, legitimacy, success and sustainability. Indigenous stories and voices are captured as case study chapters, written in lively, clear language about what is happening that is promising and productive in Indigenous self-determined governance for self-determined development in Canada, Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and the USA; all English colonial–settler countries.
Book Synopsis Canada: The State of the Federation, 2013 by : Martin Papillon
Download or read book Canada: The State of the Federation, 2013 written by Martin Papillon and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally associated with the federal government, Aboriginal policy has arguably become a far more complex reality. With or without formal self-government, Aboriginal communities and nations are increasingly assertive in establishing their own authority in areas as diverse as education, land management, the administration of justice, family and social services, and housing. The 2013 State of the Federation volume gathers experts and practitioners to discuss the contemporary dynamics, patterns, and challenges of Aboriginal multilevel governance in a wide range of policy areas. Recent court decisions on Aboriginal rights, notably on the duty to consult, have forced provincial and territorial governments to develop more sustained relationships with Aboriginal organizations and governments, especially in the management of lands and resources. Showing that Aboriginal governance is, more than ever, a multilevel reality, contributors address questions such as: What are the challenges in negotiating and implementing these bilateral and trilateral governance agreements? Are these governance arrangements conducive to real and sustained Aboriginal participation in the policy process? Finally, what are the implications of these various developments for Canadian federalism and for the rights and status of Aboriginal peoples in relation to the Canadian federation?
