Book Synopsis Content, Expression and Structure by : Elisabeth Engberg-Pedersen
Download or read book Content, Expression and Structure written by Elisabeth Engberg-Pedersen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-05-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers offers an alternative to mainstream functional linguistics on two points. Especially in American linguistics, function and structure are often viewed almost as polar opposites; in addition, structure is often understood as being only a matter of linguistic form — or expression — as opposed to content. The book tries to illustrate why function and structure must be understood as mutually dependent in relation to language — and why the most interesting aspect of language structure is the way it structures the content side of language. In this, the book represents a reaffirmation of traditional concerns in structural linguistics, especially with respect to the structural integrity of individual languages — but with a reversal of traditional priority: structure is not autonomous, but must be understood on the basis of function. Without being hostile to typological and universal generalizations, the articles suggest that similarities between languages can only be responsibly discussed on the basis of an understanding that includes a respect for language differences. The book contains discussions of a number of different languages including Nahuatl, Danish Sign Language, French, and Tlapanec, and focuses on the way meaning is organized in the grammar of Danish. A final section sums up theoretical perspectives.

Book Synopsis Structure in Language by : Thomas Berg
Download or read book Structure in Language written by Thomas Berg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines one of the allegedly unique features of human language: structure sensitivity. Its point of departure is the distinction between content and structural units, which are defined in psycholinguistic terms. The focus of the book is on structural representations, in particular their hierarchicalness and their branching direction. Structural representations reach variable levels of activation and are therefore gradient in nature. Their variable strength is claimed to account for numerous effects including differences between individual analytical levels, differences between languages as well as pathways of language acquisition and breakdown. English is found to be consistent in its branching direction and to have evolved its branching direction in line with the cross-level harmony constraint. Structure sensitivity is argued to be highly variable both within and across languages and consequently an unlikely candidate for a defining property of human language.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Language Development by : Eric H. Lenneberg
Download or read book Foundations of Language Development written by Eric H. Lenneberg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Language Development: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Volume 1 provides information pertinent to the important discoveries and issues in the area of language development. This book covers important topics, including language policy, language rehabilitation, and language in the classroom. Organized into three parts encompassing 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the relationship between animal communication and language proper. This text then examines the early metaphysical views as to the origin of speech and explores the probable nature of the language employed by early man. Other chapters consider the growing conception that language is essentially a localizable cerebral function. This book discusses as well the shortcomings of speech as a means of human communication. The final chapter deals with a comparison of child language with deteriorated language in senile dementia. This book is a valuable resource for linguists and readers who are faced with practical decisions concerning language.

This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guiding learners to acquire sufficient knowledge of grammar constitutes an interesting domain in the field of teaching English as a second language. This research-based resource book focuses on the learning of English tenses and verbal categories, which forms a huge and fascinating component of English grammar that merits attention in teachers’ attempts to improve their students’ English proficiency. Inspired by concepts relating to explicit learning, consciousness raising, contrastive analysis and error analysis, the author used a wealth of data derived from a set of elicitation procedures to reveal the linguistic interference encountered by second language learners. Arguing for the need to conceptualise grammatical rules positively, this inquiry focuses on studying learners’ wide-ranging responses to a large number of items designed to explore linguistic interference in the learning of English verb forms in eight major categories. The findings, explanations and illustration-based recommendations provided in this volume will give trainee teachers, instructors and researchers deeper insights into how strategies can be aptly employed to enhance learners’ performance in using English verb forms and related grammatical categories, which constitute a key dimension in the learning and teaching of English as a second language.
