India is on the verge of an "arthritis epidemic" India is one of the twelve strategic focus areas for orthopedic device manufacturers. The implants manufactured abroad and exported to India, after import duty and other taxes, they are unaffordable to Indian patient. This was thus sighted as need to develop implant in India considering indian patient's anatomy.SMP is Sancheti modular Prosthesis for total hip replacement surgery. It has been developed at Sancheti Institute Of Orthopedic research as an indigenous uncemented hip stem by, Dr.K.H.Sancheti. This product is developed in view of reducing THR surgery cost by developing, manufacturing the hip joint at SIOR. Thereby it is expected to facilitate more number of hip replacement surgeries and give better quality of life for more number of patients. Thus it is targeted to cater for increasing need of THR surgeries in India every year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinematically aligned total knee/total hip arthroplasty, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. The relevance of available and emerging technological tools for these personalized approaches is also explained, with coverage of, for example, robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and augmented reality. Contributions from surgeons who are considered world leaders in diverse fields of this novel surgical philosophy make this open access book will invaluable to a wide readership, from trainees at all levels to consultants practicing lower limb surgery

Book excerpt: This book presents analyses of the most commonly reported failure modes of hip stems: loosening and thigh pain; both are attributed to the relative motion and instability at the bone-implant interface due to failure to achieve sufficient primary fixation. The book investigates various factors that could affect primary stability and therefore the long-term outcome of hip arthroplasty. The results complement experimental work carried out in this area as in-vitro experiments have several limitations that could be addressed through computer simulations.

Book excerpt: The finite element method, one of the most advanced simulation techniques in solid mechanics, is used for orthopedic biomechanics. It is used as a tool for the design and analysis of total joint replacement and other orthopedic devices. The design of hip joint prostheses is a complex process that requires close co-operation between engineers and surgeons. One of the most important factors in the implant design is to reduce stress on the femur and the bone-cement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of newly designed implants under body weight load during stumbling by parametric modeling. In the parametric design, the prosthesis functional requirement is that the locking of stem to the femur head using cement should be strong enough to preclude unlocking during the life time of a patient and to prevent sliding of the implant into the bone-cement. These parameters are then optimized. Using the results of this investigation, the probability of failure was investigated for both the initial and shape-optimized prosthesis designs using several simple performance functions describing fatigue theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Femoral component loosening and Prosthetic stem fractures have renewed interest in conservative alternatives to conventional total hip replacements. One such alternative is the concept of surface replacement. The objective in this study is a finite element analysis of a femoral surface replacement cup with Particular attention given to the interfacial stresses. An axisymmetric model with a grid of two-dimensional isoparametric elements is generated. This study utilizes an adaptive model so as to include the effect of bone remodeling in response to stress. The stiffness is considered to be linearly proportional to the stress in the femoral head and neck. Isotropic properties are chosen. The stresses are determined by performing iterative finite element analyses based upon an appropriate variation of the stiffness property in each analysis until the results obtained are within the convergence limit. Plots of stress contours in the femoral head are obtained for the loads acting on the joint during walking.
