Book excerpt: First there was the pandemic, and people rushed to the north to spread the virus like rats leaving a plague ship. Then there were the rentals, because other people, eager to capitalize on the pandemic, rushed to develop every last bit of shoreline and turn it into five-star accommodations for the rats. Then, well, all hell broke loose. * CottageEscape.zyx: Satan Takes Over, sequel to TurboJetslams: Proof #29 of the Non-Existence of God, is a short and funny novel about 'cottage country' with a deep and serious message. A perfect (pre-)summer read that will make you laugh and think at the same time. “A hilarious take, based in reality. You know Jass has lived this life. It is way too familiar. I laugh ... as much as I cry ...” Jennifer Jilks, mymuskoka.blogspot.com

Book excerpt: When an independent activist and her office-temp-with-a-doctorate buddy embark on a quest for a chocolate bar (a bar that serves not alcohol, but chocolate – in all its deliciously decadent forms), they pick up a hitchhiking extraterrestrial who’s stopped on Earth to ask for directions. (I know, right?) They do their damnedest to help 'X' find the information she needs to get back home, all the while confronting everyday sexism (rather like bashing your head against a jellyfish) and committing assorted outrageous acts and everyday rebellions ...

Yet Homer uses over a dozen words for anger. Fighting Words and Feuding Words engages the powerful tools of Homeric poetic analysis and the anthropological study of emotion in an analysis of two anger terms highlighted in the Iliad by the Achaean prophet Calchas. Walsh argues that kotos and kholos locate two focal points for the study of aggression in Homeric poetry, the first presenting HomerOs terms for feud and the second providing the native terms that designates the martial violence highlighted by the Homeric tradition. After focusing on these two terms as used in the Iliad and the Odyssey, Walsh concludes by addressing some post-Homeric and comparative implications of Homeric anger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fighting Words, an interesting and provocative picture of George W. Bush emerges, very different from the one often presented in the press. Drawing on extensive research, the author brings together the man of faith, the astute political leader, and the persuasive speaker. His treatment credits the President with positive attributes and domestic and international accom- plishments. The book takes the view that what we know about President Bush generally comes through the speeches that we hear him give, beginning with his spontaneous, incisive remarks at Ground Zero. By focusing on truth as a vital sign of viable political rhetoric, and giving a formula for producing effective persuasive speeches, the author provides standards with which to appraise political leaders' rhetoric. An analysis of George W's credibility as a leader uses the researched traits of competent, forward- looking, inspiring, and honest. His intelligence is appraised on the basis of multiple intelligences theory. Highlighting George W's transformation into an effective persuasive speaker are discussions of his two distinct verbal styles; his rhetorical asset of humor; his dominant themes of value; and his speech delivery.

When their mom's boyfriend took them in, Della had Suki. When that same boyfriend did something so awful they had to run fast, Della had Suki. Suki is Della's own wolf--her protector. But who has been protecting Suki? Della might get told off for swearing at school, but she has always known how to keep quiet where it counts. Then Suki tries to kill herself, and Della's world turns so far upside down, it feels like it's shaking her by the ankles. Maybe she's been quiet about the wrong things. Maybe it's time to be loud. In this powerful novel that explodes the stigma around child sexual abuse and leavens an intense tale with compassion and humor, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley tells a story about two sisters, linked by love and trauma, who must find their own voices before they can find their way back to each other. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Years beforehand, I described all those necessary expected political events or natural phenomenon related to the whole world. Most of them have already precisley come true, some of them are now being fulfilled and the rest will come true in future. This is a live cosmic information, new word, that I, Georgian prophet Lela Kakulia, pronounce by Gods will. I was sent to the earth in order to let countries, states, particular politicians or humankind in general know their future. By this means cosmos gave a chance to the universe to soften destined blows and avoid destruction. I predict all my life, from birth, and will predict till I am on the earth. A prophet is sent by cosmos once in few centuries when the earth faces a special danger, when it is on the edge of the existence. I, Gerogian prophet, am sent with the mission to save the world. I bring enormous, proteceting energy for people and contries and hand it out with no regret. I often drawcosmis information and my drawings are the source of collosal energy, that full people with hope and peace. This is the book that would live for ages and give answer to peoples any question. No one on earth owns such information neither particular individual nor analytical centres. My prediction has no analogue and thus is unique. With respect and love, Georgian prophet Lela Kakulia.

Book excerpt: This new collection of documents helps students understand the complex texture of Russian public rhetoric and popular debate during World War I and the 1917 Revolution. How better to understand history than through the words of those who lived it? Competing Voices from the Russian Revolution: Fighting Words presents documents that underscore the extraordinary richness of public discussion about key events and issues during the 1917 Russian Revolution, one of the pivotal events in modern history. Carefully edited and annotated, the documents help clarify the issues while revealing the broad range of ways in which Russians understood the events unfolding around them. Focusing on public rhetoric and debate in Russia from the outbreak of World War I in 1914 through the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly in January 1918, the documents present the views not only of key political figures, but also of ordinary men and women—mothers, soldiers, factory workers, peasants, students, businesspeople, and educated professionals.
