Book excerpt: This document is a summary and evaluation of methodological procedures and results for the field test of the Beginning Postsecondary Student Longitudinal Study Second Followup, 1990-94 (BPS:90/94). The BPS study is a departure from previous studies in that it starts with a cohort of individuals as they enter their postsecondary studies regardless of when they completed high school. As a result, information is becoming available about nontraditional students who have delayed the completion of their education. All types of postsecondary students (academic, vocational/occupational, and technical) are included and can be represented in known proportions. An introduction considers the background, purposes, and scheduled products of the BPS study. Chapter 2 describes study design and method. Operating control systems implemented for the study are described in chapter 3. Details and descriptions of data locating and collection activities and outcomes are given in chapter 4, and data quality is examined in chapter 5. Supporting documentation is presented in four appendixes. Eight figures and 42 tables contain information about conducting the study. (SLD)

Book excerpt: A field test program was conducted to evaluate the potential of two indirect wind sensing techniques as possible support in a warm fog dispersal system. The sensors examined were a Laser Doppler Velocimeter and an Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder. Data from these devices were correlated with measurements taken by anemometers mounted upon a 61-m meteorological tower. The average deviation of the Laser Doppler Velocimeter was + or - 1.0 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 7 deg in azimuth. Five-minute averaging periods were taken and four to six altitudes were scanned during each run. The average deviation of the Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder for 5-min averages was + or - 0.9 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 13 deg in azimuth. In one protracted run using 10-min averages, the deviations were + or - 0.6 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 6 deg in azimuth.

Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Research Report 870: Field Performance of Corrugated Pipe Manufactured with Recycled Polyethylene Content explores the use of corrugated high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe manufactured with recycled content and proposes guidelines for manufacturing these pipes to ensure they meet the service life requirements for the given application. This project expounded on the research published in NCHRP Report 696. The research consisted of manufacturing several large diameter corrugated HDPE pipes out of various blends of virgin and post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials commonly used in land drainage applications and evaluating these pipes in the field and laboratory to determine their service life in typical installed conditions. PCR materials were the focus of this project as they are more readily available and typically used in the corrugated HDPE pipe industry than post industrial recycled materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foamed polystyrene in board stock form was tested as an expedient surface insulation with XM-18 airfield landing mats as a trafficking surface. The insulation was placed on a frozen subgrade in two layers, making a total thickness of four in. The test section was constructed in May 1971 near Fairbanks, Alaska, at the USA CRREL Farmers Loop Road Facility. The section was trafficked with a load cart which applied a total wheel load of 26.2 kips on a C-130 main landing gear wheel having a tire inflation pressure of 80 psi. Four hundred passes of the load cart were made on the test section; the final level surveys showed a minimum of settlement and structural distress to the insulation boards. The maximum depth of thaw beneath the insulation did not exceed 20 in. during each of the summers of 1971 and 1972. This method of expedient road construction would provide satisfactory service throughout a summer thaw season and probably longer without deleterious effects on the subgrade and the adjacent environment.

To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.
