The permanent establishment of the industry will call for reference books, and "The Beet Grower's Manual And d104 Book For The Investor In Beet Sugar Enterprises" was written in the hope that it might prove a valuable help to those on whom the industry depends in the first place, viz: The farmers raising the beets, and the capitalists furnishing the money for the building of factories. I have divided the book into three parts: The first part being devoted to a brief record of the history of the beet sugar industry in Europe; its rise and progress in the United States and its economic features. The second part deals exclusively with beet culture. While beet raising has not come to us as an untried experiment, it is an entirely new interprise for most of our farmers. To make a success of it, it is necessary that every factor entering into it be given careful consideration and attention. I have endeavored to give under this heading what I consider the most practical and accurate methods for raising beets, avoiding detail of a too scientific nature, the book being primarily intended for the novice in the field. However, I trust that it will also prove of interest to the experienced beet farmer, agriculturists and factory owners. Part three contains a short description of the process of Sugar making, hints how to secure and build a sugar factory and other information of interest to the investor in beet sugar enterprises. The datas are from many sources, the principal ones being publications by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and State Experiment Stations, The Weekly Statistical Sugar Trade Journal, and others. As is to be expected in a compilation of data of this character from miscellaneous sources, the figures presented do not always fully agree, but in no instance is there a serious discrepancy. The Appendix contains a Directory, the object of which is to furnish the very best sources for purchasing sugar and other machinery, beetfarming tools and other articles and materials used in field and factory.
