Download or read book Greed for Gold written by Kurt J. Jaeger and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Biblical times and throughout the Solomonic succession, Ethiopia's gold mines have continuously been in the respective rulers' hands. Therefore, raids on the gold shipments to the capital were always a significant problem. Marauding bandits known as 'Shiftas' had captured large amounts of modern firearms from the dissolving Italian military colonial forces in 1941, thus dramatically raising the risk of such transports. Most directly affected was the gold mine of Shakiso in the region of Sidamo. With the end of the war and the return of Emperor Haile Selassie, that goldmine was once again highly productive under the supervision of a new expatriate manager. As a result, the mine's yield increased, and the gold bullion shipments to Addis Ababa started again at regular intervals. With copious and regular plunder available, the raids of the 'Shiftas' became increasingly bold. A runway for airplanes near the mine seemed to be the answer. But that too was fraught with problems during the tropical rainy season—and air transport brought yet another problem when a pilot, moved by the love of a woman, decided to steal the bullion on his last flight. Long-forgotten fuel reserves on a former airfield of the Italians allow him a stopover to leave Ethiopia far behind and out of the authorities' reach. However, on that day, a front of thunderstorms between him and the fuel supplies rapidly developed. In this situation, doubts about the success of the hazardous venture seem appropriate.

Download or read book POWER ξ SNAKE written by Beat Hans Wäfler and published by tredition. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the end of April, 1975. Saigon is about to fall, as the situation goes from severely bad to completely fucked-up. The Snake is faced with a difficult decision: he can fade into the noise of history, slowly obscured by the haze and comfort of innocent love. Or he can follow his instincts into the violent depths of human nature, along a transnational path of conflict paved by drugs and weapons smugglers, from the ricefields of Vietnam to the jungles of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Hardly a choice. Power & Snake explores the implausible and yet highly probable story of how The Snake has found himself in this situation - and what he does about it. Using the historical events we are aware of as stepping stones in the dangerous swamps of twentieth century conflicts, The Snake brings the reader into the heart of darkness and shows us how to both respect and laugh at the creatures that call it their home.
Book Synopsis A Laodicean: The Castle of the De Stancys by : Thomas Hardy
Download or read book A Laodicean: The Castle of the De Stancys written by Thomas Hardy and published by tredition. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Laodicean: The Castle of the De Stancys - Thomas Hardy - A Laodicean; or, The Castle of the De Stancys. A Story of To-Day is a novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1880–81 in Harper's New Monthly Magazine. The plot exhibits devices uncommon in Hardy's other fiction, such as falsified telegrams and faked photographs. Paula Power inherits a medieval castle from her industrialist father who had purchased it from the aristocratic De Stancy family. She employs two architects, one local and one, George Somerset, newly qualified from London. Somerset represents modernity in the novel. In the village there is an amateur photographer, William Dare, the illegitimate son of Captain De Stancy, an impoverished scion of that family. Captain De Stancy represents to Paula the notion of medieval nobility. William Dare, bastard and unrecognised son of Captain de Stancy, and a thorough wastrel, decides to intervene to promote his father in her affections (solely so that he, Wade, can continue to gamble and live off Paula's income). He fakes a telegram and a photograph to make it appear that Somerset is leading a dissolute lifestyle as a drunken gambler. His subterfuge is discovered by Captain De Stancy's sister Charlotte who has befriended Paula. She decides to tell Paula the truth and Paula pursues Somerset to the continent where he has gone mistakenly believing Paula and the Captain to have been married. She finds him and they are reunited and marry. In revenge, Wade burns down the castle using his family's portraits and furniture as kindling; Somerset proposes to build a modern house in its place.
Book Synopsis The Pomegranates and Other Modern Italian Fairy Tales by :
Download or read book The Pomegranates and Other Modern Italian Fairy Tales written by and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of magical Italian folk and fairy tales—most in English for the first time The Pomegranates and Other Modern Italian Fairy Tales presents twenty magical stories published between 1875 and 1914, following Italy’s political unification. In those decades of political and social change, folklorists collected fairy tales from many regions of the country while influential writers invented original narratives in standard Italian, drawing on traditional tales in local dialects, and translated others from France. This collection features a range of these entertaining jewels from such authors as Carlo Collodi, most celebrated for the novel Pinocchio, and Domenico Comparetti, regarded as the Italian Grimm, to Grazia Deledda, the only Italian woman to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature. With one exception, all of these tales are appearing in English for the first time. The stories in this volume are linked by themes of metamorphosis: a man turns into a lion, a dove, and an ant; a handsome youth emerges from a pig’s body; and three lovely women rise out of the rinds of pomegranates. There are also more introspective transformations: a self-absorbed princess learns about manners, a melancholy prince finds joy again, and a complacent young woman discovers gratitude. Cristina Mazzoni provides a comprehensive introduction that situates the tales in their cultural and historical context. The collection also includes period illustrations and biographical notes about the authors. Filled with adventures, supernatural and fantastic events, and brave and flawed protagonists, The Pomegranates and Other Modern Italian Fairy Tales will delight, surprise, and astonish.

Book Synopsis Forgotten Disney by : Kathy Merlock Jackson
Download or read book Forgotten Disney written by Kathy Merlock Jackson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work demonstrates that not everything that Disney touched turned to gold. In its first 100 years, the company had major successes that transformed filmmaking and culture, but it also had its share of unfinished projects, unmet expectations, and box-office misses. Some works failed but nevertheless led to other more stunning and lucrative ones; others shed light on periods when the Disney Company was struggling to establish or re-establish its brand. In addition, many Disney properties, popular in their time but lost to modern audiences, emerge as forgotten gems. By exploring the studio's missteps, this book provides a more complex portrayal of the history of the company than one would gain from a simple recounting of its many hits. With essays by writers from across the globe, it also asserts that what endures or is forgotten varies from person to person, place to place, or generation to generation. What one dismisses, someone else recalls with deep fondness as a magical Disney memory.
