This area of the Atlantic coast has an extensive tradition of tales of the supernatural, handed down over generations. Book excerpt: An aging American coal carrier goes down in a winter storm off the Virginia coast. Only three of the crew of 34 survive; the rest perish in the ice-cold water. Was the dead captain at fault? Did the mate neglect safety precautions? Or did a penny-pinching management skimp on necessary maintenance? The giant car-and-passenger ferry Estonia sinks in a gale in the Baltic Sea, carrying over 800 passengers to their deaths and causing national scandals in three countries. Was she sunk by a terrorist bomb? By the CIA or the Russian secret police? Was the Russian mob involved? Was she carrying military secrets, or smuggled narcotics? A massive government cover-up is suspected. What was the truth? Answers to these and other fascinating cases can be found in Deep-Sea Detectives: Maritime Mysteries and Forensic Science. Author Peter R. Limburg explores the advances that make it possible to bring back evidence from as deep as 20,000 feet below the sea. "It's Sherlock Holmes with bubbles! Actually, Holmes had it easy; his mysteries weren't submerged beneath miles of water. These fascinating tales of scoundrels and submersibles make for terrific adventures in the little-known world of undersea forensics." -Dennis Meredith, Director of Research Communications, Duke University

Book excerpt: To commemorate the 200 years since the exploring and naming of the Brisbane River by John Oxley in 1823, David Jones has compiled 100 maritime stories of Queensland. The book is in seven sections covering the early days, colonial era, shipwrecks, wartime and others. Australia’s First Nations people lived in and around the Brisbane River for thousands of years. Though they did not have a name for the entire river, sections of the river were called ‘Meanjin’, ‘Maiwar’ and ‘Toowong’. Other names have been lost over time. Similarly, the Brisbane River was broken up into reaches by the new arrivals. They include Hamilton Reach, Bulimba Reach, Humbug Reach, Shafston Reach, Town Reach and others. The first Europeans to discover the Brisbane River was documented by Thomas Welsby in The Discoverers of the Brisbane River, published in 1913. He states that Richard Parsons, Thomas Pamphlet and John Finnegan were the original discoverers though John Oxley gave them no credit for this. In 200 years the river has been the backbone of the city of Brisbane. Today it is used for trade, tourism, transport, pleasure and Brisbane’s water supply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly accessible history of ships and shipping on the Great Lakes, upper elementary readers are taken on a rip-roaring journey through the waterways of the upper Midwest. Great Ships on the Great Lakes explores the history of the region’s rivers, lakes, and inland seas—and the people and ships who navigated them. Read along as the first peoples paddle tributaries in birch bark canoes. Follow as European voyageurs pilot rivers and lakes to get beaver pelts back to the eastern market. Watch as settlers build towns and eventually cities on the shores of the Great Lakes. Listen to the stories of sailors, lighthouse keepers, and shipping agents whose livelihoods depended on the dangerous waters of Lake Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Give an ear to their stories of unexpected tragedy and miraculous rescue, and heed their tales of risk and reward on the low seas. Great Ships also tells the story of sea battles and gunships, of the first vessels to travel beyond the Niagara, and of the treacherous storms and cold weather that caused thousands of ships to sink in the Great Lakes. Watch as underwater archaeologists solve the mysteries of Great Lakes shipwrecks today. And learn how the shift from sail to steam forever changed the history of shipping, as schooners made way for steamships and bulk freighters, and sailing became a recreation, not a hazardous way of life. Designed for the upper elementary classroom with emphasis on Michigan and Wisconsin, Great Ships on the Great Lakes includes a timeline of events, on-page vocabulary, and a list of resources and places to visit. Over 20 maps highlight the region’s maritime history. The accompanying Teacher’s Guide includes 18 classroom activities, arranged by chapter, including lessons on exploring shipwrecks and learning how glaciers moved across the landscape.

Book excerpt: A mother pleads with her son not to sail on a certain steamer because she has dreamt - three times in a row - that the vessel will never reach its destination. Modern-day observers watch in awe as a ghost ship - blazing from bow to stern - dutifully reenacts a two-hundred-year-old tragedy that the observers'' fathers and grandfathers also watched reenacted with the same sense of awe. A crewman walks past a solitary figure seated in the ship''s restaurant only to turn a moment later and find the restaurant empty. A red glow appears in the darkness ahead of a modern warship, and the faint outline of an old galleon, her sails in tatters, is seen approaching against the wind - only to vanish a moment later before the startled eyes of observers. Such strange events have been seen for centuries and continue to be reported even today by witnesses who are, for the most part, sober and responsible human beings. In Lost at Sea folklore specialist Michael Goss and George Behe, an expert on maritime disasters, explore what lies behind these amazing narratives and enduring legends.
