Book excerpt: Traditional queuing theory assumes types are known or perfectly observed, and each type is typically put in its type-specific queue which is prioritized using some version of the celebrated c-mu rule; we call this type-based queueing. We study feature-based priority queuing where types are not perfectly observed but are inferred from observed features using a ``classifier.'' A practically appealing approach combines an off-the-shelf classifier that predicts the type with type-based priority queueing. We propose a direct approach that optimizes the classifier to directly predict the priority queue from features. The explicit modeling of the classifier in the queueing-system design is the novel contribution of this paper. We present an analytic model to study the optimal queue classification that minimizes queuing delay costs. We study how the optimal number of priority queues and the assignment of features to queues changes with the classifier accuracy. We present a numerical study on a real data set of medical images utilized in digital triage in radiology. We find that, relative to type classification, optimal feature-based priority queuing can improve delay costs by up to 54% using state-of-the-art image classifiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression.- Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning Java 8 Language Features covers essential and advanced features of the Java programming language such as the new lambda expressions (closures), inner classes, threads, I/O, Collections, garbage collection, streams, and more. Author Kishori Sharan provides over 60 diagrams and 290 complete programs to help you visualize and better understand the topics covered in this book. The book starts with a series of chapters on the essential language features provided by Java, including annotations, inner classes, reflection, and generics. These topics are then complemented by details of how to use lambda expressions, allowing you to build powerful and efficient Java programs. The chapter on threads follows this up and discusses everything from the very basic concepts of a thread to the most advanced topics such as synchronizers, the fork/join framework, and atomic variables. This book contains unmatched coverage of Java I/O, including NIO 2.0, the Path API, the FileVisitor API, the watch service and asynchronous file I/O. With this in-depth knowledge, your data- and file-management programs will be able to take advantage of every feature of Java's powerful I/O framework. Finally, you'll learn how to use the Stream API, a new, exciting addition to Java 8, to perform aggregate operations on collections of data elements using functional-style programming. You'll examine the details of stream processing such as creating streams from different data sources, learning the difference between sequential and parallel streams, applying the filter-map-reduce pattern, and dealing with optional values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy-Based Network Management (PBNM) systems enable business rules and procedures to be translated into policies that configure and control the network and its services. Those who manage network systems are aware that this approach can benefit both network management as well as the development of applications that use network services; however, the details surrounding these systems has been obscured by marketing hype, numerous acronyms, and theoretical complexities. Policy-Based Network Management: Solutions for the Next Generation cuts through the hype surrounding PBNM and makes it approachable for those who really need to understand what it has to offer. The author, founder of the IETF Policy Framework working group, discusses system requirements, information models, and system components for Policy-Based Management. He also provide practitioners with a resource for developing and/or incorporating PBNM systems. As network systems become larger and more complex, creating policies for them has become a crucial step in the management of network systems, and this book is a welcome addition to this exciting approach.* Presents a completely new approach to PBNM that unites the business, system, and implementation spheres.* As the basis for examples and discussion, uses the DEN-ng information model, an easy-to-understand open standard tied closely to eTOM and NGOSS.* Introduces the Ponder system, then examines Ponder extensions designed to enhance the structure of high-level policies and their application in a PBNM system.* Filled with examples illustrating how policies are most effectively used in a PBNM system and what new directions PBNM is likely to take.

Book excerpt: This authoritative guide to deploying, managing, and optimizing QoS with Cisco technologies has been thoroughly revamped to reflect the newest applications, best practices, hardware, software, and tools for modern networks. This new edition focuses on complex traffic mixes with increased usage of mobile devices, wireless network access, advanced communications, and video. It reflects the growing heterogeneity of video traffic, including passive streaming video, interactive video, and immersive videoconferences. It also addresses shifting bandwidth constraints and congestion points; improved hardware, software, and tools; and emerging QoS applications in network security. The authors first introduce QoS technologies in high-to-mid-level technical detail, including protocols, tools, and relevant standards. They examine new QoS demands and requirements, identify reasons to re-evaluate current QoS designs, and present new strategic design recommendations. Next, drawing on extensive experience, they offer deep technical detail on campus wired and wireless QoS design; next-generation wiring closets; QoS design for data centers, Internet edge, WAN edge, and branches; QoS for IPsec VPNs, and more.

Book excerpt: Within the last few years Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery technology has established itself as a key technology for enterprises that wish to improve the quality of the results obtained from data analysis, decision support, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. The Fourth International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2002) continues a series of successful conferences dedicated to this topic. Its main objective is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. The conference focuses on the logical and physical design of data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems. The scope of the papers covers the most recent and relevant topics in the areas of association rules, clustering, Web mining, security, data mining techniques, data cleansing, applications, data warehouse design and maintenance, and OLAP. These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the conference. We received more than 100 papers from over 20 countries, and the program committee finally selected 32 papers. The conference program included one invited talk: “Text Mining Applications of a Shallow Parser” by Walter Daelemans, Univer- ty of Antwerp, Belgium. We would like to thank the DEXA 2002 Workshop General Chair (Roland Wagner) th and the organizing committee of the 13 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA 2002) for their support and their cooperation.
