Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership today is no easy task. Christian leaders called to shepherd others get caught in power struggles and are tempted to abuse their pastoral authority. Pastors feel that they must project strength and certainty in order to preach and minister credibly. Too often our models of leadership are shaped more by culture than by Christ. John Stott offers an alternative vision in this biblical approach to servant leadership, exemplified by the apostle Paul in his ministry to the church in Corinth. Above all, Stott reassures us that God is at work even in the midst of our human weakness. "God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." 1 Corinthians 1:27 A clear articulation of the nature of leadership as well as the thoughtful study of Scripture we have come to expect from John Stott, this exposition of 1 Corinthians 1--4 offers us a model of ministry surprisingly relevant twenty centuries later: leadership rooted in humility and grace, serving the church with the love of Christ. Study guide included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many different types of leaders--leaders in the business world, in government, in the home, and in the local church. Sadly, many times leadership has been completely contrary to what the Bible teaches. Many leaders are focused on what they can get from their positions of authority rather than on what they can give to the works in which they are involved. While some view it as a tool for popularity and power, leadership is a privilege. Leadership requires responsibility. We need biblical leaders who are people of integrity and humility--leaders who are willing to be different.

In this accessible and comprehensive book, leadership expert Aubrey Malphurs articulates a working definition of Christian leadership based on the Bible and his own extensive research. Malphurs begins by defining a uniquely Christian leader from the inside out, from godly character and commitment to pure motives and a servant attitude. Each chapter contains helpful questions for reflection and discussion. The appendix includes numerous audits to help readers evaluate themselves on various leadership components. Being Leaders is the first book of a two-part series on leadership. The companion book will address the how-to of building leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As understanding and awareness of abuse has grown, many revelations of church leaders abusing their power have come to light. How did the church get here? Is there a way we can address both individual and institutional failings to counter the misuse of power and, more importantly, prevent it in first place? Powerful Leaders? exposes and explores how leaders are tempted away from a biblical model of leadership into illegitimate - and in the worst cases abusive - use of authority and power. Director of Living Leadership, a charity that focuses on healthy leadership and church culture, Marcus Honeysett traces how leaders move along a spectrum of healthy to unhealthy uses of power and position and offers practical wisdom for countering and preventing harmful leadership. Drawing on his years of experience in the local church and working with leaders and congregations, Honeysett unpacks how to spot danger signs of abuse in the church and provides advice on what to do if you see or are under unhealthy leadership. He also explores why people don't blow the whistle and encourages critical self-examination in existing leaders to ensure they maintain a healthy use of power - and offers guidance to help leaders improve their skills and move back towards healthy, biblically-based leadership. For anyone concerned about improving safeguarding in the church, Powerful Leaders? will prove a valuable resource. It challenges and equips both those in leadership and those in a position to hold leaders accountable, and will empower them to take the necessary steps forward to create healthier church cultures in which everyone can thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written on servant leadership, but it is not always tied to egalitarian leadership. Sometimes authority and power instead of God’s love are presented as the core of the Christian faith. The church at times derails, imitating worldly culture, emphasizing entitlement that relies on an innate or permanent human hierarchy of rank. Responding to today’s conflict over leadership, Christian Egalitarian Leadership calls us back to its biblical roots: what is Christian egalitarian leadership? Why is it biblical? How does it work? Thoughtful and devout Christian leaders carefully explain how sharing leadership follows God’s intentions and is crucial to implement today. The theoretical and practical ramifications of these concepts are extended to many areas of the Christian life by numerous qualified individuals, women and men of different races and economic and social classes. Chapters overview New Testament teachings, biblical authority, Old Testament and contemporary examples, God’s intention at creation, pagan philosophy’s influence on Christian hierarchal leadership, multicultural and multi-ethnic leadership in the United States and Africa, marriage, rearing children, equipping youth and laity, church planting, retirement, and missions, from the cradle to the mission field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic of leadership, there is an age-old debate about whether true leader is born or made. It is about spiritual leadership giving guide to the church, which is an organism not just an organization, and the manual is the Bible. The tool for leading the flock of God is prayer and the Word of God. Leadership is influence. As leaders, we are to influence others by setting good examples and be a servant leader. They are servant leaders because they follow Jesus. "Did not come to be served, but to serve." A leader with inquisitiveness, initiative, and involvement. The Delegate of Leadership from Exodus 18:12""27 helps us to know that we can't do it alone. Jethro's counsel was to delegate authority to others in judging the people while Moses remained a mediator between the people and God. Minor responsibilities were to be given to good men. These men were to have the following traits, many which are similar to the requirements for leadership in the church. "To empower the people to share the burden the work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone " (Exod. 18:18). The essential for leadership is to get people motivated for the tasks. In the book of Nehemiah, I called it the Nehemiah principles of leadership. I learn that Nehemiah was a man who became consumed with a burden. In his example, we are reminded that whenever God uses a person to accomplish his work, it all begins with a burden. The book reveals that what was going in the heart of Nehemiah was the call of God upon him. How to handle obstacles in leadership. First thing to do is pray. We must rely on God and respected the opposition and refused to quit. Keep our eye on the big picture. Learn to pick our battle to fight. We must learn to exercise humility when opposition come our way

Book excerpt: What if everything you've heard about leadership is wrong? Secular models of leadership rooted in pragmatic success dominate Christian leadership in the West. It makes our work impersonal and exploitive. And, at worst, it serves the leader rather than those the leader leads. We need a different style of leadership—one patterned after Jesus. We need to learn to influence others out of our character, for that is what Jesus did. The Christian Leader is not about improving your church, your work, or your family; it is about changing how you lead. It does more than teach you how to modify your behavior; it shows you how to change the sources of your behavior—your motives and reasons for being a Christian leader. In the end, as everything you know and believe about Christian leadership is transformed, it will lead to transformation in those you lead and serve.
