Book Synopsis Review of Tropical Reservoirs and Their Fisheries by : P. A. van Zwieten
Download or read book Review of Tropical Reservoirs and Their Fisheries written by P. A. van Zwieten and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2011 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A considerable quantity of data and information were collected on many aspects of the systems of the three reservoirs, including hydrological, biophysical and limnological features, primary production, and fish and fisheries data. This information was condensed and synthesized with the aim of providing a baseline against which the ecological changes that have taken place since impoundment can be described and analysed. Efforts are made to explain changes in fish catch in relation to climatic variations, ecological succession and fishing effort. The review shows that biological data and information are generally available. However, as is also common elsewhere, all three cases suffer from the general tendency to isolate and compartmentalize research into separate disciplines.
Book Synopsis Some Problems of the Management of Shared Stocks by : J. A. Gulland
Download or read book Some Problems of the Management of Shared Stocks written by J. A. Gulland and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1980 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper discusses the problems facing countries when managing stocks of fish that move between their EEZs and the EEZs of adjacent countries, or onto the high seas. The action needed depends on the pattern of movement of the stocks. The different patterns of movement are discussed; they vary from small local dispersions in which only a small proportion of the stock cross boundaries between national EEZs to long migrations in which virtually all the stock may move from one EEZ to another. Collaboration between countries in research on shared stocks is always beneficial, and should not raise any serious problem. Collaboration in choosing and implementing management measures can be more difficult. The problems raised, and the nature of collaboration required to achieve effective management are discussed in relation to the different patterns of movement.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries by : Paul J. B. Hart
Download or read book Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries written by Paul J. B. Hart and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have witnessed strong declines in fish stocks around the globe, amid growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity. Fisheries biologists and managers are therefore increasingly asking about aspects of ecology, behaviour, evolution and biodiversity that were traditionally studied by people working in very separate fields. This has highlighted the need to work more closely together, in order to help ensure future success both in management and conservation. The Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries has been written by an international team of scientists and practitioners, to provide an overview of the biology of freshwater and marine fish species together with the science that supports fisheries management and conservation. This volume, subtitled Fisheries, focuses on a wide range of topics, including the history of fisheries science, methods of capture, marketing, economics, major models used in stock assessments and forecasting, ecosystem impacts, marine protected areas and conservation. It builds on material in Volume 1, Fish Biology, which ranges from phylogenetics and biogeography to physiology, recruitment, life histories, genetics, foraging, reproductive behaviour and community ecology. Together, these books present the state of the art in our understanding of fish biology and fisheries and will serve as valuable references for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fisheries science. They will also be useful to researchers who need up-to-date reviews of topics that impinge on their fields, and decision makers who need to appreciate the scientific background for management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems. Provides a unique overview of the study of fish biology and ecology, and the assessment and management of fish populations and ecosystems. The first volume concentrates on aspects of fish biology and ecology, both at the individual and population levels, whilst the second volume addresses the assessment and management of fish populations and ecosystems. Written by an international team of expert scientists and practitioners. An invaluable reference tool for both students, researchers and practitioners working in the fields of fish biology and fisheries.

Book Synopsis The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservation, sustainable use and development of aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) is critical to the future supply of fish. The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is the first ever global assessment of these resources, with the scope of this first Report being limited to cultured AqGR and their wild relatives, within national jurisdiction. The Report draws on 92 reports from FAO member countries and five specially commissioned thematic background studies. The reporting countries are responsible for 96 percent of global aquaculture production. The Report sets the context with a review of the state of world’s aquaculture and fisheries and includes overviews of the uses and exchanges of AqGR, the drivers and trends impacting AqGR and the extent of ex situ and in situ conservation efforts. The Report also investigates the roles of stakeholders in AqGR and the levels of activity in research, education, training and extension, and reviews national policies and the levels of regional and international cooperation on AqGR. Finally, needs and challenges are assessed in the context of the findings from the data collected from the countries. The Report represents a snapshot of the present status of AqGR and forms a valuable technical reference document, particularly where it presents standardized key terminology and concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The economic importance of fishes and their societal and culturalrelevance provide powerful incentives for large-scale, sustainedstudies of their dynamics" —the Editors The overall goal of this book is to give a picture of thepresent use of information on fish reproductive biology inassessment and management and its potential for improvingmanagement of these resources. Compiled by an international team of authors, each an expert intheir field, this exceptional volume is divided into three majorsections: Biology, population dynamics, and recruitment Information critical to successful assessment andmanagement Incorporation of reproductive biology and recruitmentconsiderations into management advice and strategies Including over 100 diagrams, this book is essential reading forall fisheries scientists. Libraries in universities and researchestablishments where this subject is studied and taught should havecopies on their shelves. "As one author put it: the goal is to facilitate a 'dialoguebetween assessment scientists and biologists.' Readers of anyspecialty should accept this challenge, and this book is anexcellent resource to aid them." —Fisheries, March 2010
