Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanisms of failure of composite structures and developing mechanism based failure criteria are important considerations in designing structures made of composite materials. The compressive response of composite materials has received considerable attention due to their significance in the aerospace industry and the complexity associated with compressive failure. Several competing failure mechanisms such as fiber/matrix interfacial failure, fiber microbuckling/kinking, delamination initiation and delamination buckling may become active in compressive loading. Environmental effects such as an elevated temperature can alter and affect these failure mechanisms. In this project, a micromechanics based predictive model for the notched strength of multidirectional laminates is presented and implemented via the finite element method. Experimental results to verify/refute this model are presented at both room and elevated temperature. The in-situ shear response of the matrix, the fiber mechanical properties, the laminate lay-up and fiber volume fraction serve as input to the model. The predictions of the model are found to match favorably with experimental data. The effect of ply angle and its influence on the failure mechanism are quantified and compared with available experimental data. This work is the first development of a non-empirical mechanics based failure prediction methodology for notched strength of composite laminates.

Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental studies of identify the dominant failure mechanisms for compression fatigue of notched composite laminates have been conducted. The effects of stacking sequence and matrix material on damage growth as well as failure mechanisms under compression fatigue loading are reported. Two types of resin materials and four kinds of laminate layups have been considered. Two of the stacking sequences are fiber dominated and two are quasi-isotropic. Ultrasonic C-scans and photomicrographic studies have been utilized for experimental observations. An analytical methodology developed for the study of tension fatigue of notched laminates has been modified to obtain patterns of damage growth under quasi-static load by increasing it gradually in steps. For each step increase in load, a finite element stress analysis is performed and intralaminar and/or interlaminar failures in the elements are predicted.

Book excerpt: From the Author's PrefaceThe objective of this book is to provide a thorough and systematic study of the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations. Stress concentrations are introduced in laminated plates in the forms of circular holes, elliptical openings and straight cracks. These forms of cutouts have many practical applications, and are familiar to most engineers. Stress concentrations exist in all known structural components. Stress concentrations have great practical importance because they are normally the cause of failure. In addition to stress analyses of laminated composites, we need more fundamental understanding of the failure mode, the failure criterion, the effects on global laminate response, and the design of composites in the presence of stress concentrations. In this book, all the subjects studied are closely related to the problem of stress concentrations in laminated composites . . . . All the models are verified with many experimental results. The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to give the readers an in-depth and thorough understanding of the problem of stress concentrations in composites. This book is the first to address the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations in a systematic way.

Book excerpt: Determination of compressive properties at failure is an important factor for the design of composite structures. In this work, an analysis concerning the compression strength in fibre direction of composite structures is presented. A novel specimen geometry is proposed with the aim to obtain failure in a valid zone of the coupon free of stress concentrations. Experimental tests permitted to validate the usage of the new coupon in compression and four-points bending, at room and elevated temperature. Further tests permitted to study the influence of matrix degradation on compressive strength in fibre direction. Experimental results demonstrated different behaviours for carbon and glass reinforced plastics. A non-local failure criterion was utilized to predict the strength of composite structures with stress concentrations in tension and compression. The identified parameters were validated on coupons presenting size effects. The failure mechanisms of particular laminates in static and fatigue tension (ex. quasi-isotropic) where analyzed. Delamination can be the cause of these failures, in particular for UD plies and brittle matrices. In other cases, failure can be explained by compression failure in fibre direction generated by Poisson effect and favoured by matrix degradation. This failure mechanism permitted to model the experimental results in fatigue loading for quasi-isotropic laminates fabricated with a balanced carbon/PEEK woven ply. Finally the influence of matrix damage on the characteristic length of the non-local failure criterion was assessed on pre-damaged coupons with stress concentrations.

Book excerpt: Damage accumulations before ultimate failure in laminated composites containing an open hole were studied and compared under tensile and compressive loadings. Four laminate layups, [02/± 45]2s, [0/90/ ± 45]2s, [ ± 45]4s, and [ ± 30/ ± 60]2s, were selected for the investigation. Two sets of laminates were prepared with one loaded in tension and another loaded in compression. They were examined using X-ray techniques after being loaded to specific load levels.

Book excerpt: The composite material community has been interested in developing a matrix fiber combination which could improve the ability of a laminate in resisting interlaminate fracture impact loading to a greater degree than in the past and ultimately, improve upon the toughness of the composite material. Recently, a matrix has been manufactured that appears to assist in obtaining these goals. This material is a thermoplastic resin referred to as polyetheretherkeytone (Peek). A review of literature produced very little information related to Gr/Peek. Thus an experimental study reported here-in was conducted to investigate the high temperature strength (tension and compression) of Gr/Peek and Gr/Epoxy laminates with holes. The results were then used to determine the parameters necessary to predict trends incorporating the point stress, average stress failure criteria and the three parameter curve fir criterion. The comparison of predicted and experimental failure stress are shown graphically. The failure modes of Gr/Peek and Gr/Ep are analyzed with the help of electron scanning micrographs. It is seen that an interface degradation exists for Gr/Peek (Polyetheretherkeytone) at higher temperatures. An effect of shear crippling similar to that of Gr/Ep is observed in compression failure of Gr/Peek. Book excerpt: The advantages of composite materials include a high specific strength and stiffness, formability, and a comparative resistance to fatigue cracking and corrosion. However, not forsaking these advantages, composite materials are prone to a wide range of defects and damage that can significantly reduce the residual strength and stiffness of a structure or result in unfavorable load paths. Emphasizing defect identification and restitution, Defects and Damage in Composite Materials and Structures explains how defects and damage in composite materials and structures impact composite component performance. Providing ready access to an extensive, descriptive list of defects and damage types, this must-have reference: Examines defect criticality in composite structures Recommends repair actions to restore structural integrity Discusses failure modes and mechanisms of composites due to defects Reviews NDI processes for finding and identifying defects in composite materials Relating defect detection methods to defect type, the author merges his experience in the field of in-service activities for composite airframe maintenance and repair with indispensable reports and articles on defects and damage in advanced composite materials from the last 50 years.

Under tension, the material accumulates cracks and fiber fractures, while under compression, the material delaminates and buckles. Tensile-compressive fatigue may cause either of these failure modes depending on the specific damage occurring in the laminate. This damage depends on the stress ratio of the fatigue loading. Analysis of the fatigue behavior of the composite laminate under tension-tension, compression-compression, and tension-compression had led to the development of a fatigue envelope presentation of the failure behavior. This envelope indicates the specific failure mode for any stress ratio and number of loading cycles. The construction of the fatigue envelope is based on the applied stress-cycles to failure (S-N) curves of both tensile-tensile and compressive-compressive fatigue. Test results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

Compressive tests are performed on both notched and unnotched specimens made from T800 carbon fiber-924C epoxy laminates, AS4 carbon fiber-PEEK laminates, 2D woven T800 carbon fiber-924 epoxy, and 3D woven AS4 carbon fiber-LY564 epoxy. Additionally, unnotched and notched compressive tests are performed on beechwood and birch plywood. In all cases, the dominant failure mechanism is by fiber microbuckling. An infinite band kinking model is used to estimate the unnotched strength and a large-scale crack bridging analysis is used to predict the notched strength.
