This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admittedly engineers simply continue to calculate the projects they are given by architects, but engineers also draw or redraw, gauge aesthetics and reinvent the production of the form. Is it the architect or the engineer who designs the structure, lays its foundations and establishes the intentionality of the project?

Book Synopsis Tall Building Foundation Design by : Harry G. Poulos
Download or read book Tall Building Foundation Design written by Harry G. Poulos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive guide to the design of foundations for tall buildings. After a general review of the characteristics of tall buildings, various foundation options are discussed followed by the general principles of foundation design as applied to tall buildings. Considerable attention is paid to the methods of assessment of the geotechnical design parameters, as this is a critical component of the design process. A detailed treatment is then given to foundation design for various conditions, including ultimate stability, serviceability, ground movements, dynamic loadings and seismic loadings. Basement wall design is also addressed. The last part of the book deals with pile load testing and foundation performance measurement, and finally, the description of a number of case histories. A feature of the book is the emphasis it places on the various stages of foundation design: preliminary, detailed and final, and the presentation of a number of relevant methods of design associated with each stage.
Book Synopsis Historical Earthquake-Resistant Timber Framing in the Mediterranean Area by : Helena Cruz
Download or read book Historical Earthquake-Resistant Timber Framing in the Mediterranean Area written by Helena Cruz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of the best papers from the HEaRT 2015 conference, held in Lisbon, Portugal, which provided a valuable forum for engineers and architects, researchers and educators to exchange views and findings concerning the technological history, construction features and seismic behavior of historical timber-framed walls in the Mediterranean countries. The topics covered are wide ranging and include historical aspects and examples of the use of timber-framed construction systems in response to earthquakes, such as the gaiola system in Portugal and the Bourbon system in southern Italy; interpretation of the response of timber-framed walls to seismic actions based on calculations and experimental tests; assessment of the effectiveness of repair and strengthening techniques, e.g., using aramid fiber wires or sheets; and modelling analyses. In addition, on the basis of case studies, a methodology is presented that is applicable to diagnosis, strengthening and improvement of seismic performance and is compatible with modern theoretical principles and conservation criteria. It is hoped that, by contributing to the knowledge of this construction technique, the book will help to promote conservation of this important component of Europe’s architectural heritage.
