Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences provides an overview of the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) field to students entering the discipline in higher education. The purpose of FCS, what majors, minors, and certificates are available, and a description of college norms and expectations are described. Why do some students set career and life goals and fail at them and others set goals and achieve them? Understanding values and how they shape what goals are set in students' lives is explained as well as how successful people go about achieving their goals. Students ultimately learn how to set goals to guide their lives into the best direction for them to successfully achieve personal, financial, and career aspirations. Additionally, the history of Family and Consumer Sciences is explored to better understand how the field began and where it stands today. Current careers available in each area of FCS are looked at so students have an understanding of what opportunities are available once graduated in their specialization. Finally, a philosophical approach to the field is reviewed to gain insight as to why they personally are entering this field; what they have to offer the discipline and how that can be reciprocated by a satisfying and rewarding journey."--Back cover
Download or read book Academic Motherhood written by Kelly Ward and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Motherhood tells the story of over one hundred women who are both professors and mothers and examines how they navigated their professional lives at different career stages. Kelly Ward and Lisa Wolf-Wendel base their findings on a longitudinal study that asks how women faculty on the tenure track manage work and family in their early careers (pre-tenure) when their children are young (under the age of five), and then again in mid-career (post-tenure) when their children are older. The women studied work in a range of institutional settings—research universities, comprehensive universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges—and in a variety of disciplines, including the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Much of the existing literature on balancing work and family presents a pessimistic view and offers cautionary tales of what to avoid and how to avoid it. In contrast, the goal of Academic Motherhood is to help tenure track faculty and the institutions at which they are employed “make it work.” Writing for administrators, prospective and current faculty as well as scholars, Ward and Wolf-Wendel bring an element of hope and optimism to the topic of work and family in academe. They provide insight and policy recommendations that support faculty with children and offer mechanisms for problem-solving at personal, departmental, institutional, and national levels.
Book Synopsis Turning the Tide on Poverty by : Lionel J. Beaulieu
Download or read book Turning the Tide on Poverty written by Lionel J. Beaulieu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the experiences of 14 high poverty communities in the rural South that accepted the invitation to be part of the Turning the Tide on Poverty (Tide) initiative. While history would suggest that impoverished places have limited capacity to make good things happen, Tide demonstrated otherwise. This volume is a testament to the positive work that can be realized when people from all walks of life are accorded the opportunity to discuss, deliberate, and act on strategies designed to improve the lives of rural people and places in the South. The message is clear: when local residents are provided a safe space to weigh in on local issues and asked to give respectful consideration to the views of others in their community, they create pathways for spurring positive changes. Simply put, civic engagement propels people to do more for their community and instils in them a sense of hope for what can be accomplished when local people work together. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Community Development.

The last decade has witnessed an escalating call for heightened interaction between universities and the "real world". Demands have grown for higher education institutions to instill democratic citizenship and address students' moral development. In response to this rise in demand, there has been a notable shift toward emphasizing service learning within academia. As educators grapple with the imperative to seamlessly integrate theory and practice, Applications of Service Learning in Higher Education steps into the forefront, delving into the myriad applications of service learning to effectively address this critical issue. At its core, the book aims to showcase concrete examples of successful service learning applications, acting as a catalyst for the integration of this transformative pedagogy into the academic fabric. Beyond the surface, the book delves into the intricate planning, execution, and assessment stages of service learning projects, whether manifested within local communities or on an international scale.
