Book excerpt: This study examined the motivating factors for students to enroll in advanced placement math courses based on the data collected from the 2016 High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09) by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The key variables reviewed in the study were the students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivational reasons for taking more math courses, math course credit graduation requirements in high school, and whether a parent worked in a STEM career. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors were viewed through the lens of motivation based on their personal successes and future plans compared to influences from school personnel, family, and peers. The study used the student survey to create a subsample of 11th grade students as of the 2012 school year, enrolled in public schools, and who had answered the item regrading whether or not they had taken an AP math course (n = 4996). The results indicated students were more motivated by intrinsic factors compared to extrinsic factors, regardless of sex. Sex differences did play a role when considering extrinsic motivation, after controlling for previous math achievement and socio-economic status. For males, extrinsic motivation factors increased their odds of taking an AP Math course. In addition, students who were enrolled in high schools that required at least three math credits for graduation were more likely to take an AP math course. Lastly, having a parent with a career in a STEM field significantly increased the odds that a student enrolled in AP math courses.

The STEM pipeline is dependent on students' mathematics course-taking trajectories, which are determined once a student enrolls in his/her first Algebra course. Despite efforts to increase access to advanced math courses, there is a national decline in participation in these courses over the last two decades (Watt, Shapka, Morris, Durik, Keating, & Eccles, 2012). During the later high school years many students opt out of math-related disciplines (Meece, 2006). Student motivation predicts choice to "pursue" mathematics (Martin, Anderson, Bobis, Way, & Vellar, 2012), thus attending to student motivation is a necessary precursor to increasing the numbers of students choosing to pursue advanced mathematics learning. This case study uses the increasing eighth grade Algebra enrollment trends in an urban Californian school district to investigate motivational changes found between students selected into eighth grade Algebra with peers enrolled in other math courses referenced as General Mathematics. Using two waves of motivation survey data, we estimate motivational changes for eighth grade students beginning in the fall and ending in the spring. This research focuses on two questions: (1) How do achievement goals, expectancy, and task value change for eighth grade Algebra students compared with peers enrolled in General Mathematics courses? and (2) Do these motivational changes vary by mathematics achievement prior to Algebra course placement? Findings indicated that all students placed in Algebra, on average, experienced increases in maladaptive performance-avoid goals as compared with peers placed in General Mathematics. Average and low performing students placed in Algebra experienced decreases in performance-approach goals as compared with peers placed in General Mathematics. Furthermore, all students placed in Algebra experienced declines in both academic self-efficacy and task value as compared with peers placed in General Mathematics. Average and low achieving students experienced greater declines in self-efficacy and task value than high achieving peers in Algebra. Book excerpt: Given the growing economic returns to education (Psacharopoulos & Patrinos, 2004) and the overwhelmingly high educational expectations of American high school students (Domina et al., 2011; Goyette, 2008), one might expect nearly all U.S. high school students to take as many academic courses as they can. Consistent with this expectation, much research on inequalities in course completion focuses on structural inequalities in "opportunities to learn" (Catsambis, 1994; Oakes, 1990; Schneider et al., 1998; Stevenson et al., 1994). This research demonstrates that students' current and future math opportunities are unequal and linked to inequalities formed in the past. However, less attention has been given to the fact that nearly 40 percent of U.S. high school students opt out of one or more years of high school mathematics (authors computations ELS: 2002). This estimate is even grimmer when we include high school dropouts and exclude retaken math courses. For this reason, this study focuses on students' agency to choose (or not) to take four years of math while accounting for a web of influences such as social background, math track, prior performance, and state policies. Drawing upon youth academic motivation research, this paper investigates the factors that influence student decisions to complete four years of high school mathematics. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

One obvious arena where mathematics education research can contribute to practice is the design and implementation of school mathematics curricula. This observation holds whether we are talking about curriculum as a set of broad, measurable competencies (i.e., standards) or as a comprehensive set of resources for teaching and learning mathematics. Impacting practice in this way requires fine-grained research that is focused on individual student learning trajectories and intimate analyses of classroom pedagogical practices as well as large-scale research that explores how student populations typically engage with the big ideas of mathematics over time. Both types of research provide an empirical basis for identifying what aspects of mathematics are important and how they develop over time. This book has its origins in independent but parallel work in Australia and the United States over the last 10 to 15 years. It was prompted by a research seminar at the 2017 PME Conference in Singapore that brought the contributors to this volume together to consider the development and use of evidence-based learning progressions/trajectories in mathematics education, their basis in theory, their focus and scale, and the methods used to identify and validate them. In this volume they elaborate on their work to consider what is meant by learning progressions/trajectories and explore a range of issues associated with their development, implementation, evaluation, and on-going review. Implications for curriculum design and future research in this field are also considered.
