Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 3.89, language: English, abstract: Microfinance promises to reduce poverty. To achieve this amazing objective Microfinance institutions have to become strong enough in financial performance because donor constancy is not a given. Thus the question is: In what extent the OCCSCO -specific, industry-specific (MFI) and macroeconomic factors that determine OCCSCO's financial performance from the period 2013-2017, By using OLS estimation method to measure the effect of internal and external factors that affect financial performance in terms of return on asset. The researcher used SPSS 20.0 version to analyze the data that was obtained from secondary sources. The study was based on a five years secondary data obtained from AEMFI Financial performance analysis report and MOFEC economic forum report for10 selected OCCSCO in Eastern Hararghe branch. Beside this the study used primary data analysis to solicit managers, accountants and customer service officers perception towards factors affecting financial performance of Oromia credit and saving share company in Eastern Hararghe Branch. Regarding the explanatory variables, operational efficiency, GDP and size which affect OCCSCO financial performance significantly. The outcome of the study shows that Age of microfinance institutions has a positive but statistically insignificant effect on their financial performance. The other explanatory variables which is Portfolio at risk>30, Gearing ratio, capital to asset ratio and Market concentration affect negatively and not significant. The Oromia regional state MFIs policy makers and managers should give high concern to the credit risk management, expense management and large MFIs size management and also the government and policy makers should work combining both poverty reduction and financial self- sufficiency of OCCSCO.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: .69, Uganda Management Institute (Uganda Management Institute), course: Masters in Business Administration Degree, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the performance of microfinance institutions in Uganda. Hofokam Limited (Ltd) was used as a case study. The objectives of the study were: to assess the effect of governance mechanisms on the performance of Hofokam Ltd, to establish the effect of management information systems on the performance of Hofokam ltd and to find out the extent to which finding affects the performance of it. The study sample was 48 and the findings showed that the selection criteria of the board members was not based on related experience and management remuneration was not competitive enough to attract and retain talent. The Management Information System didn't support real time reporting for decision making and branches were not networked with head office with the MIS, the microfinance institution had struggled to access reasonable capital with affordable terms since the donor funding stopped. The study drew conclusions that governance mechanisms greatly affected the performance of microfinance as they determine the direction of the MFI, MIS in its state had a relatively low impact on the performance of Hofokam Limited and that funding was not a critical success factor for MFI performance as compared to other factors. The study recommends that the selection of the Board should be to a large extent based on ones' professional experience, the MFI shouldn't commit all efforts to be regulated as it has not proved a success factor for many other MFIs, the MIS in use should be upgraded to enable linkage across the branches and head office rather than invest in a totally new software, the MFI should look at increasing the level of operational efficiency e

Book excerpt: The 1991 government change in Ethiopia ushered in a centralised system of governance, aimed to bring about harmony and cooperation between different groups and to promote local self-rule. It has proceeded in two phases: 1991-2001 centred on creating and powering National/Regional Governments, termed mid-level decentralisation. Further powers were devolved in 2001 through the District Level Decentralization Program and Urban Management Profram. This volume brings together studies by the Forum for Social Studies and others, with the aim of identifying knowledge gaps for further research and to generate debate on the issues in Ethiopia. The study is in two parts: a literature review seeking to document existing studies and highlight research gaps; and field work which involved a rapid assessment of eight weredas and two kifle ketemas in Addis Ababa. The other three studies are synopses of master theses submitted to the Institute of Regional and Local Development Studies of Addis Ababa University.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, , language: English, abstract: Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Assosa town do not show the necessary performance level and some of the enterprises disappear from the market in their infant age. Hence, this study was conducted with the objective of assessing factors affecting performance of micro and small enterprises in Assosa town. After statistical analysis, the study concludes that both external and internal factors affect performance of MSEs and their existence could be improved. Variables such as political, legal, financial, marketing, working premises, infrastructural, opportunity seeking, persistence, commitment to the work, demand for efficiency and quality, goal setting, risk taking, information seeking, and self-confidence positively influence to performance of MSEs (profit) and significantly affect performance of MSEs. Similarly, for capital, variables such as political, legal, financial, marketing, working premises, technological, opportunity seeking, persistence, commitment to the work, demand for efficiency and quality, risk taking, information seeking, and self-confidence positively influence the performance of MSEs (capital) and significantly affect performance of MSEs. In order to reduce the influence of external and internal factors on performance of MSEs, policy makers and the service provider institutions need to consider and revise the extent, intensity, and quality of support and their linkages.

The paper supports the view that microfinance institutions, especially those engaged in full financial intermediation, complement effectively the banking sector in extending financial services and successfully draw on the rich experience of community-based development and preexisting informal methods of financial intermediation in Africa. Growing linkages between microfinance institutions and the banking system and the dissemination of good practices by nongovernment organizations contribute to the sound development of the sector, supported by regulation and supervision by local authorities.

Book excerpt: This paper highlights that real interest rates in Brazil have declined substantially over time, but are still well above the average of emerging market inflation targeting regimes. The adoption of an inflation-targeting regime and better economic fundamentals (reduction in inflation volatility and improvements in the fiscal and external positions) has helped Brazil sustain significantly lower real interest rates than in the past. Going forward, the paper shows that Brazil can converge towards lower equilibrium real interest rates if domestic savings increase to the level of other emerging market countries. The effect is particularly pronounced if the increase in domestic savings is achieved through higher levels of public savings. Still, econometric results suggest that, controlling for everything else in the model, real interest rates in Brazil are about two full percentage points higher than in other countries in the sample, suggesting that there are still Brazil-specific factors that have not been captured by the empirical analysis. Some of these factors may include credit market segmentation and inflation inertia generated by still pervasive indexation practices.

Book excerpt: Community seed banks first appeared towards the end of the 1980s, established with the support of international and national non-governmental organizations. This book is the first to provide a global review of their development and includes a wide range of case studies. Countries that pioneered various types of community seed banks include Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Nepal, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Zimbabwe. In the North, a particular type of community seed bank emerged known as a seed-savers network. Such networks were first established in Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA before spreading to other countries. Over time, the number and diversity of seed banks has grown. In Nepal, for example, there are now more than 100 self-described community seed banks whose functions range from pure conservation to commercial seed production. In Brazil, community seed banks operate in various regions of the country. Surprisingly, despite 25 years of history and the rapid growth in number, organizational diversity and geographical coverage of community seed banks, recognition of their roles and contributions has remained scanty. The book reviews their history, evolution, experiences, successes and failures (and reasons why), challenges and prospects. It fills a significant gap in the literature on agricultural biodiversity and conservation, and their contribution to food sovereignty and security.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , course: Business Adminstration, language: English, abstract: The main objective of the thesis is to assess the effect of credit risk management on the quality of loans portfolio in the case of Development Bank of Ethiopia. A sample of 84 respondents was drawn from the employees of the Development Bank of Ethiopia by using purposive sampling technique. Both primary and secondary data were used. Data related to loan portfolio and loan position is obtained from the bank whereas, primary data are collected using structured questioners from the employees of the bank. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to conduct the research and Multiple Regression Analysis was run using SPSS Version 21.0 to analyze the data. With regard to credit risk management practices, the result show that DBE has not satisfactory risk Management practice. Precisely, using score 1 (poor) to 5 (best), all the parameters of risk management practice assessment have a score value below 3.40, i.e. Credit Risk Granting and Portfolio Quality Control (3.40), Credit Risk System and Standard (3.20), Credit Risk and Portfolio Quality Control (3.17), Risk Identification, Measurement and Control (3.03), and Risk Environment (2.98). The Bank`s loan portfolio is also more vulnerable to various types of risks, such as to unpredictable risk, predictable, and controllable risks. The bank’s NPL ratio was above 15% for the last five years. The regression result also showed that sound credit granting process and the existence of comprehensive risk management system and standards are the significant variables that affect loan portfolio quality of the Bank. Credit risk management practice of the bank has insignificant effect on loan portfolio quality. Both in terms of Non-performing loan and concentration, DBE has poor loan portfolio quality which is due to the bank’s poor credit risk management practice. Therefore, there is a need to improve and enhance credit risk management practice of the Bank, especially, by improving the credit granting process to have sound credit risk management, and by updating credit risk management system and standards so as to have strong credit management.

Book excerpt: When insurgent organizations factionalize and fragment, it can profoundly shape a civil war: its intensity, outcome, and duration. In this extended treatment of this complex and important phenomenon, Michael Woldemariam examines why rebel organizations fragment through a unique historical analysis of the Horn of Africa's civil wars. Central to his view is that rebel factionalism is conditioned by battlefield developments. While fragmentation is caused by territorial gains and losses, counter-intuitively territorial stalemate tends to promote rebel cohesion and is a critical basis for cooperation in war. As a rare effort to examine these issues in the context of the Horn of Africa region, based upon extensive fieldwork, this book will interest both scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in insurgent groups and conflict dynamics.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (School of Business), course: Finance, language: English, abstract: This study sought to establish the factors that affect dividend payout of listed commercial banks in Kenya. Specifically, profitability, liquidity, firm size, and past dividend were determined if they affected dividend payout among listed commercial banks in Kenya. The study was based on the Bird in Hand Theory. A correlational research design was used to examine relationship among the variables. The target population for this study consisted of all listed commercial banks in Kenya. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select listed commercial banks for the study. The study employed secondary data which was obtained from the financial statements of the commercial banks for a period of five years ranging from 2012 to 2016. The study showed that profitability, liquidity, firm size and past DPS accounted for 77.69% of variations in dividend payout for listed commercial banks. All the four factors were found to be significant in affecting dividend payout for the listed commercial banks. Profitability and past dividend per share were found to be positively correlated with dividend payout while liquidity and firm size were found to be negatively correlated with dividend payout. The researcher recommends more research to be done taking into consideration other factors. These include factors such as the commercial banks management, legal environment, and competition within the banking industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents an investigation into the causes and consequences of livelihood vulnerability in Somali Region, Ethiopia. People in this region, pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, farmers and traders, have suffered a series of livelihood shocks in recent years, some natural (droughts, livestock disease), others political (a crackdown on contraband trade, bans by Gulf states on livestock imports, violent conflict between (sub-)clans or between Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) militia and the state). As a result of these multiple shocks, and because rainfall in the Horn of Africa has been low in recent years, questions are being asked about the sustainability of pastoralism as a livelihood system, not only in Somali Region but throughout the Greater Horn of Africa.
