Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackwell Publishing is delighted to announce that this book hasbeen Highly Commended in the 2004 BMA Medical Book Competition. Here is the judges' summary of this book: "This is a technical book on a technical subject but presentedin a delightful way. There are many books on statistics for doctorsbut there are few that are excellent and this is certainly one ofthem. Statistics is not an easy subject to teach or write about. The authors have succeeded in producing a book that is as good asit can get. For the keen student who does not want a book formathematicians, this is an excellent first book on medicalstatistics." Essential Medical Statistics is a classic amongst medicalstatisticians. An introductory textbook, it presents statisticswith a clarity and logic that demystifies the subject, whileproviding a comprehensive coverage of advanced as well as basicmethods. The second edition of Essential Medical Statistics hasbeen comprehensively revised and updated to include modernstatistical methods and modern approaches to statistical analysis, while retaining the approachable and non-mathematical style of thefirst edition. The book now includes full coverage of the mostcommonly used regression models, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, Poisson regression and Cox regression, as wellas a chapter on general issues in regression modelling. Inaddition, new chapters introduce more advanced topics such asmeta-analysis, likelihood, bootstrapping and robust standarderrors, and analysis of clustered data. Aimed at students of medical statistics, medical researchers, public health practitioners and practising clinicians usingstatistics in their daily work, the book is designed as both ateaching and a reference text. The format of the book is clear withhighlighted formulae and worked examples, so that all concepts arepresented in a simple, practical and easy-to-understand way. Thesecond edition enhances the emphasis on choice of appropriatemethods with new chapters on strategies for analysis and measuresof association and impact. Essential Medical Statistics is supported by a web siteat www.blackwellpublishing.com/essentialmedstats. Thisuseful online resource provides statistical datasets to download,as well as sample chapters and future updates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of variance (ANOYA) models have become one of the most widely used tools of modern statistics for analyzing multifactor data. The ANOYA models provide versatile statistical tools for studying the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. The ANOYA mod els are employed to determine whether different variables interact and which factors or factor combinations are most important. They are appealing because they provide a conceptually simple technique for investigating statistical rela tionships among different independent variables known as factors. Currently there are several texts and monographs available on the sub ject. However, some of them such as those of Scheffe (1959) and Fisher and McDonald (1978), are written for mathematically advanced readers, requiring a good background in calculus, matrix algebra, and statistical theory; whereas others such as Guenther (1964), Huitson (1971), and Dunn and Clark (1987), although they assume only a background in elementary algebra and statistics, treat the subject somewhat scantily and provide only a superficial discussion of the random and mixed effects analysis of variance.

Book excerpt: Simultaneous Statistical Inference, which was published originally in 1966 by McGraw-Hill Book Company, went out of print in 1973. Since then, it has been available from University Microfilms International in xerox form. With this new edition Springer-Verlag has republished the original edition along with my review article on multiple comparisons from the December 1977 issue of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. This review article covered developments in the field from 1966 through 1976. A few minor typographical errors in the original edition have been corrected in this new edition. A new table of critical points for the studentized maximum modulus is included in this second edition as an addendum. The original edition included the table by K. C. S. Pillai and K. V. Ramachandran, which was meager but the best available at the time. This edition contains the table published in Biometrika in 1971 by G. 1. Hahn and R. W. Hendrickson, which is far more comprehensive and therefore more useful. The typing was ably handled by Wanda Edminster for the review article and Karola Decleve for the changes for the second edition. My wife, Barbara, again cheerfully assisted in the proofreading. Fred Leone kindly granted permission from the American Statistical Association to reproduce my review article. Also, Gerald Hahn, Richard Hendrickson, and, for Biometrika, David Cox graciously granted permission to reproduce the new table of the studentized maximum modulus. The work in preparing the review article was partially supported by NIH Grant ROI GM21215.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume addresses the inadequacies of basic statistical methods that standard textbooks tend to ignore. The author introduces new procedures with accompanying tables that illustrate the practicality of the methods. Concentrating on basic experimental designs that are central to research in the social sciences, Wilcox describes new nonparametric techniques, two-way ANOVA designs, and new results related to the analysis of covariance and repeated measure design. This book serves as the ideal reference and supplement to standard texts by making the statistical advances of the last thirty years accessible to graduate students and researchers.
