Book excerpt: Despite research demonstrating the effects of hostile school climates on the academic achievements of minority sexual and gender identity (MSGI) youth, little attention is paid to preparing future teachers to work with this diverse student population. Given the importance of making learning environments safe and welcoming for all students, this study utilized mixed methodology to examine the role sexual and gender diversity played in one teacher preparation program. Questionnaires and interviews gathered data about pre-service teachers' and teacher educators' factual knowledge, professional commitment, and perceptions of preparedness concerning students who identify as sexual or gender minorities. The findings suggest the teacher preparation program addressed sexual and gender diversity at an inconsistent and superficial level. Pre-service teachers were interested in exploring these topics further, contrary to their teacher educators' perspectives that discussions about minority sexual and gender diversity are irrelevant outside of diversity courses. The Rural Advocacy Institute, a first-time initiative through the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project, offered three weeks of professional development centered on rural education and teaching English language arts in rural public schools. The study is a grounded theory study; grounded theory forces the researcher to stay "close to the data," compare data sets, and use reflective writing to identify conceptual categories in the data. Data collection in the study included semi-structured interviews with six K-12 teachers participating in the Institute and twenty-seven hours of video-recordings of all whole-group discussions and writing activities. The grounded theory generated in this study incorporates Robert Brooke's work with "underlife" and Homi Bhaba's concept of "third space" in maintaining that researchers, teacher educators, and professional development coordinators must consider the ways teachers negotiate the "hybrid" discourses created in professional development opportunities. For example, participant-teachers in this study demonstrate an affinity for discourses of advocacy for rural schools, while demonstrating an "underlife" discourse that often resists the role of advocate. Through Peter Elbow's concept of "resonant voice" and Bakhtin's concept of "answerability," the grounded theory also explains the role of voice in the teachers' discourses on writing and how teachers perceive advocacy. The study argues that analyzing how teachers discuss and view voice, and its relationship to writing and professional agency, is a means of better understanding how and if teachers are able to perceive themselves as advocates.

Book excerpt: The practice of a rural school psychologist is challenging and can be fraught with aspects of isolation, role confusion, and burn out (Hargrove, 1986). In many rural communities, the only qualified mental health professional may be a school psychologist. Thus, rural school psychologists require particular and generalist skill sets to meet the diverse needs of their community. This reality is in contrast to dominant discourses within the broader field of psychology, which promote limited scopes of practice within defined areas of clinical competency. A collective case study of rural school psychologists from across Saskatchewan using a Communities of Practice (Wenger, 1998) conceptual framework was undertaken to determine: (1) the domain of rural school psychology (i.e., the specialty competencies of rural school psychologists); (2) the community of rural school psychologists (i.e., how skill and knowledge is shared); and (3) the practice of rural school psychology (i.e., challenges and opportunities in practice). The study introduces Thematic Delphi Analysis as a novel methodology in community-based research. Eight (8) rural psychologists from Saskatchewan participated in semi-structured interviews and subsequently participated in the analysis through three rounds of Delphi review. The results of this preliminary study have identified the Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Behaviours (KSABs) required of rural school psychologists, the ways in which rural psychologists engage in multiple communities to maintain their competency, and their ability to use creative practice when faced with limits of their competency so that they can support students, schools, families, and communities. This study acknowledges the unique role that rural school psychologists play within the field of psychology, with the challenge of working at the limits of their competency within a space of knowledgeability. Within this space, rural school psychologists engage with creative practice procedurally and ethically, allowing for the development of innovative practices. These innovations may inform the broader field of psychology. Implications for this study promote the practice of rural school psychology and include rural psychologist perspectives in present discussions of competency.
