Book excerpt: The stimulation of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs is proven to improve their productivity to an extent that has rendered them economically viable. Generally, the stimulation design is a complex process dependent on intertwining factors such as the history of the formation, rock and reservoir fluid type, lithology and structural layout of the formation, cost, time, etc. A holistic grasp of these can be daunting, especially for people without sufficient experience and/or expertise in the exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbon reserves. This book presents the key facets integral to producing unconventional resources, and how the different components, if pieced together, can be used to create an integrated stimulation design. Areas covered are as follows: • stimulation methods, • fracturing fluids, • mixing and behavior of reservoir fluids, • assessment of reservoir performance, • integration of surface drilling data, • estimation of geomechanical properties and hydrocarbon saturation, and • health and safety. Exploitation of Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources: Hydraulic Fracturing and Other Recovery and Assessment Techniques is an excellent introduction to the subject area of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, but it also complements existing information in the same discipline. It is an essential text for higher education students and professionals in academia, research, and the industry.

Book Synopsis History, Exploration & Exploitation of Oil and Gas by : Silvia Fernanda Figueirôa
Download or read book History, Exploration & Exploitation of Oil and Gas written by Silvia Fernanda Figueirôa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discusses scientific and technological aspects of the history of the oil and gas industry in national and international contexts. The search for oil for industrial uses began in the nineteenth century, the first drills made in Azerbaijan and the United States. This intense search for a substance to become one of the most important energy sources was, many times, based on skill as well as luck, resulting in knowledge and the development of prospecting and exploration technologies. The demand for oil improved expertise in geological science, in areas such as micropaleontology, stratigraphy or sedimentology and informed different disciplines such as geophysics. These contributions made possible not only the discovery of new oil fields but also new applications and methods of exploration. Beyond the scientific and technological aspects, an industry that grew to such considerable size also impacted the political, economic, social, cultural, environmental and diplomatic issues in history. The book approaches these changes in different scales, countries, areas, and perspectives. This edited book appeals to researchers, student, practitioners in various fields from geology and geophysics to history. It is also an important resource for professionals in the oil and gas industry.

Book excerpt: The North Field/South Pars gas condensate field is the world's largest gas field with an estimated 1800 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas in place and 50 billion barrels of gas condensate. The estimated recoverable reserves are 1,260 tcf, accounting for 19% of the world's recoverable gas reserves [1]. This field is shared by Qatar and Iran with an estimated 3:1 share of the reserves respectively (divided by the maritime border). These estimates are based on static volumetric estimates. However, the ultimate recoverable reserves are dependent on the development schedule implemented by each country. In 2005, Qatar's government announced a moratorium on further development projects on the north field in 2005 that is expected to extend till at least 2015 after higher than expected pressure depletion [2, 3]. Meanwhile, the Iranian government has called for and implemented rapid development of their share of the field, the South Pars. This example showcases the interesting nature of the shared resource development task to be analyzed using the principles of game theory. In general terms, since the ultimate recovery of each player (resource owner) depends on their individual production schedule, the situation presents a 'first-mover advantage' scenario. It is possible for either player to produce their share of the resource as soon as possible leading to rapid pressure depletion, it would not be illegal to do so. However, the depleted pressure would make development of the other player's share of the resource uneconomical. The goal of the proposed paper is to study possible strategies and outcomes for exploitation of such shared hydrocarbon resources. The players involved may include resource owners such as land owners or countries and the strategies involved can be cooperative or non-cooperative. In the case of cooperative production strategies, also known as unitization, methods for profit sharing are also discussed.
Book Synopsis Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production by : Harry Dembicki
Download or read book Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production written by Harry Dembicki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Petroleum Geochemistry for Exploration and Production provides readers with a single reference that addresses the principle concepts and applications of petroleum geochemistry used in finding, evaluating, and producing petroleum deposits. Today, there are few reference books available on how petroleum geochemistry is applied in exploration and production written specifically for geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum engineers. This book fills that void and is based on training courses that the author has developed over his 37-year career in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Specific topical features include the origin of petroleum, deposition of source rock, hydrocarbon generation, and oil and gas migrations that lead to petroleum accumulations. Also included are descriptions on how these concepts are applied to source rock evaluation, oil-to-oil, and oil-to-source rock correlations, and ways of interpreting natural gas data in exploration work. Finally, a thorough description on the ways petroleum geochemistry can assist in development and production work, including reservoir continuity, production allocation, and EOR monitoring is presented. Authored by an expert in petroleum geochemistry, this book is the ideal reference for any geoscientist looking for exploration and production content based on extensive field-based research and expertise. - Emphasizes the practical application of geochemistry in solving exploration and production problems - Features more than 200 illustrations, tables, and diagrams to underscore key concepts - Authored by an expert geochemist that has nearly 40 years of experience in field-based research, applications, and instruction - Serves as a refresher reference for geochemistry specialists and non-specialists alike
