Book Synopsis Experimental Study of the Edge Plasma of the Tore Supra Tokamak by : Martin Kubic
Download or read book Experimental Study of the Edge Plasma of the Tore Supra Tokamak written by Martin Kubic and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of edge plasma physics in tokamaks has developed rapidly in recent years and is now considered as one of the major research areas of magnetic fusion. Edge probe techniques are a necessary experimental contribution to such studies, providing information about the plasma flux to the walls of the reactor. The experiments that were carried out on the Tore Supra tokamak to investigate the scrape-off layer conditions in presence of multiple discrete limiters are presented. The baseline of the scenario is to limit the discharge on discrete limiters on the low field side of the tokamak chamber, increasing the minor radius while the safety factor is kept at a constant value 4.8. Analytical tools for 3D magnetic connection analysis and magnetic field mapping together with a new method for LCFS evaluation are also presented."

Book Synopsis Active Probing of Plasma Edge Turbulence and Feedback Studies on the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT). by :
Download or read book Active Probing of Plasma Edge Turbulence and Feedback Studies on the Texas Experimental Tokamak (TEXT). written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edge fluctuations play a critical role in the overall tokamak confinement. Experiments on TEXT show that electrostatic fluctuations in the edge plasma are the dominant mechanism for energy and particle transport. The basic mechanisms responsible for the edge turbulence are the subject of ongoing research in fusion devices. To understand the driving forces responsible for edge fluctuations, a novel experiment is underway on TEXT to actively modify the turbulence at the plasma edge by launching waves using electrostatic probes in the shadow of the limiter. This technique permits active probing of the spectral properties of the edge turbulence. This new approach to the study of edge fluctuations can provide more insight into the basic dynamics of the turbulence and may, in turn, enable detailed comparison with the theory. These experiments, which rely on the use of oscillating electric fields at the plasma edge, complement edge fluctuation control studies that are presently limited to the use of applied dc biasing to influence the edge electric field profile. These experiments have been extended to control of the edge plasma fluctuation level, using feedback to explore its effects on the edge turbulence characteristics as well as on confinement.
Book Synopsis An Experimental and Theoretical Study of the "Quasi-Coherent Fluctuations" in a High Density Tokamak Plasma by : Alexander Mazurenko
Download or read book An Experimental and Theoretical Study of the "Quasi-Coherent Fluctuations" in a High Density Tokamak Plasma written by Alexander Mazurenko and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quasi-Coherent (QC) mode, observed at high densities during enhanced D-alpha (EDA) H-Mode in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, has been studied with a phase contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic. The QC mode is believed to be responsible for the reduced particle (and impurity) confinement during H-mode operation, so as to allow quasi-steady state operation of the tokamak. It is proposed that the QC mode is a form of resistive ballooning mode known as the resistive X-point mode. The measured dispersion and mode stability are found to be in good agreement with the resistive X-point mode predicted by the BOUT (Boundary Plasma Turbulence) code.

Book Synopsis Turbulence in the Divertor Region of Tokamak Edge Plasma by : R. H. Cohen
Download or read book Turbulence in the Divertor Region of Tokamak Edge Plasma written by R. H. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of recent modeling of tokamak edge plasma with the turbulence code BOUT are presented. In previous studies with BOUT the background profiles of plasma density and temperature were set as flux surface functions. However in the divertor region of a tokamak the temperature is typically lower and density is higher than those at the mid-plane. To account for this in the present study a poloidal variation of background plasma density and temperature is included to provide a more realistic model. For poloidally uniform profiles of the background plasma the calculated turbulence amplitude peaks near outer mid-plane, while in the divertor region the amplitude is small. However, present simulations show that as the background plasma profiles become more poloidally non-uniform the amplitude of density fluctuations, {tilde n}{sub i}, starts peaking in the divertor. It is found that in the divertor region the amplitude of n{sub i} fluctuations grows approximately linearly with the local density of the background plasma, n{sub i0}, while the amplitude of T{sub e} and {phi} fluctuations is positively correlated with the local electron temperature, T{sub e0}. Correlation analysis shows that plasma turbulence is isolated by the x-points.

Book Synopsis Turbulent Transport In Magnetized Plasmas (Second Edition) by : C Wendell Horton, Jr
Download or read book Turbulent Transport In Magnetized Plasmas (Second Edition) written by C Wendell Horton, Jr and published by #N/A. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a few seconds with large machines, scientists and engineers have now created the fusion power of the stars in the laboratory and at the same time find the rich range of complex turbulent electromagnetic waves that transport the plasma confinement systems. The turbulent transport mechanisms created in the laboratory are explained in detail in the second edition of 'Turbulent Transport in Magnetized Plasmas' by Professor Horton. The principles and properties of the major plasma confinement machines are explored with basic physics to the extent currently understood. For the observational laws that are not understood — the empirical confinement laws — offering challenges to the next generation of plasma students and researchers — are explained in detail. An example, is the confinement regime — called the 'I-mode' — currently a hot topic — is explored.Numerous important problems and puzzles for the next generation of plasma scientists are explained. There is growing demand for new simulation codes utilizing the massively parallel computers with MPI and GPU methods. When the 20 billion dollar ITER machine is tested in the 2020ies, new theories and faster/smarter computer simulations running in near real-time control systems will be used to control the burning hydrogen plasmas.
