Book excerpt: Wind-tunnel tests of the heat-transfer characteristics for laminar and turbulent boundary layers on a cooled flat plate were conducted at a Mach number of 2.4. Data were obtained for a Reynolds number range of 150.000 to 3,000.000 and for a surface-temperature range of -40 degrees F to 45 degrees F with recovery temperature of the order of 65 degrees F. The temperature-recovery factors agreed well with previous flat-plate reslts. The heat-transfer results were obtained with negative temperature gradients along the surface and, when related to the constant-surface-temperature case, were, in general, in good agreement with theory.

Book excerpt: Heat transfer associated with turbulent flow on a step-heated or cooled section of a flat plate at zero angle of attack with an insulated starting section was computationally modeled using the GASP Navier-Stokes code. The algebraic eddy viscosity model of Baldwin-Lomax and the turbulent two-equation models, the K- model and the Shear Stress Turbulent model (SST), were employed. The variations from uniformity of the imposed experimental temperature profile were incorporated in the computations. The computations yielded satisfactory agreement with the experimental results for all three models. The Baldwin- Lomax model showed the closest agreement in heat transfer, whereas the SST model was higher and the K-omega model was yet higher than the experiments. In addition to the step temperature distribution case, computations were also carried out for a uniformly heated or cooled plate. The SST model showed the closest agreement with the Von Karman analogy, whereas the K-omega model was higher and the Baldwin-Lomax was lower. Bahrami, Parviz A. Water and air were circulated in one of them and transformer oil in the other. The diagram of the circuit is given. Two plates were investigated with dimensions of 10.25 x 40 x 0.65 and 50.25 x 40 x 0.65 mm, which were installed in the experimental section of the circuit in rectangular channel with dimensions of 200 x 100 mm. The side walls of the experimental section were made of organic glass which made it possible to see the flow process. Laminar flow of the plates was established during all experiments. Both plates were made of silico-nickel, 0.1 mm thick. The leading edges of the plates had the shape of a semicircle with a radius of about 0.33 mm. Copper thermocouples 0.15 mm in diameter were placed between the lower and upper walls of the plate. The thermocouple junctions were isolated from the plate surface by a thin layer of mica (0.03 mm) attached by BF-2 glue. (Author).
