The experimental efforts were aimed toward improving our understanding of the physical mechanisms and scaling rules of blast extinguishment of fires through (1) tests with various common liquid (class B) fuels of different physicochemical properties and burning behavior and (2) tests with wood cribs of various element (stick) thicknesses and consequently varying burning behavior and time scales. Limited shocktube tests were also conducted in preparation for the MILL RACE event featuring blast extinction of fires on cellulosic debris. (Author).

This study focuses on the threshold air-blast condition for extinguishing fires initiated by thermal radiation. Flame blowout tests with simulated nuclear air-blast waves were conducted in the SRI-developed shock-tube facility on class-B fires both in a flat plate geometry and stabilized behind barriers. The results support the concept of flame displacement as a mechanism of extinguishment. Data on class A fuels in practical configurations are needed next. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study reports experimental and analytical effects of the blast environment within structures on fires, people, and objects, and with toxic gases created by burning debris. The program was directed toward improving the knowledge of factors that can influence the effectiveness of shelters and of other countermeasures that can contribute toward reduction of casualties and saving of life. The experimental study of blast/fire interaction was carried out with long duration flow effects (resembling those from megaton range weapons) on flaming materials. It was found that blast extinguishment of fires was strongly dependent on location of the burning material in the room, and on the type of materials. Lightweight materials were extinguished in portions of the room that experienced high velocity flows; heavier materials were never totally extinguished. In four long duration tests conducted with anthropomorphic dummies in room and chamber environments, it was found that the high velocities generated near entrances and exits (and well within a room in some geometries) caused objects and the mannikins to acquire velocities that were potentially injurious or lethal. Simple analytical models of wall debris translation indicated that, even at low overpressures, both lightweight (e.g., sheetrock) and heavy (masonry) walls can generate debris which is potentially casualty-producing. A literature search on toxic gases produced by burning debris (as might be found in the vicinity of shelters) concluded that lethal concentrations of CO could be encountered.

Three series of tests were conducted to gain practical understanding (quantitative and mechanistic) of blast effect on fires, using: (1) liquid-fuel fires of various sizes; (2) liquid-fuel fires, of various sizes, with flow-obstructing barriers upstream of the fuel source; and (3) wood-crib fire tests. Results affirm the concept of flame displacement as a mechanism of extinguishment for liquid-fuel fires on flat surfaces but suggest its limitation in describing blast/fire interactions when flow-perturbing obstacles are present upstream of the fuel bed. Even small barriers are seen to significantly increase the fire resistance to blowout by blast, by providing flame-retentive flow recirculation in their wake and effectively serving as flame-holders. For charring fuels such as wood cribs, after-shock flame displacement is seen to be augmented by sustained, blast-enhanced char involvement. The crib fire history before blast arrival and the extent of char-combustion enhancement (depending on blast strength) determine whether the crib fire is reestablished by rapid rekindling. (Author).
