Book Synopsis The Politics of Development in Morocco by : Sylvia I. Bergh
Download or read book The Politics of Development in Morocco written by Sylvia I. Bergh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, Morocco has sought to present itself as a model of genuine and gradual reform, with decentralisation as a key tenet of this. Here, Sylvia Bergh investigates the dynamics of popular participation and local governance, testing the extent to which the current structure builds local capacity, or whether it is, in fact, a tool for 'soft' state control. She narrates the realities of local administration and civil society to shed critical light on questions of democratic transition in North Africa. Her assessment of decentralisation and participatory development projects in rural Morocco, and the legal and policy frameworks in which they operate, leads to the conclusion that they have generally not yet led to an expansion of a civil society able to build local capacity or enhance bottom-up empowerment. Grounded in an approach of the 'anthropology of policy', this book makes an important contribution to literature on the democratisation, development and governance in North Africa.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Chad by : Mario J. Azevedo
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Chad written by Mario J. Azevedo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having achieved its independence from France in 1960, Chad has run into a serious crises of national building, which have continued to haunt it to the present day, making it one of the poorest and most politically unstable countries on the globe. Chad is a country with sharp geographic and climatic contrasts that puzzle and fascinate the visitor, displaying first a monotonous but majestic portion of the Saharan Desert in the north, punctuated by plains and high altitudes displayed by the Tibesti mountains, where the highest point, Emi Koussi, reaches 11,204 ft.; the middle Central Sahelian zone, where pastoral transhumance lifestyle predominates but where and nut cultivation and harvesting is possible; and an endowed southern tropical zone where the forest and the savanna meet, blessed by several long-running rivers, most notably, the Logone and the Chari that empty their waters into centuries-old Lake Chad. Even though things in Chad seem to have improved during the past 10 years, most observers agree that the path to peace, reconstruction, and economic progress is still long and arduous. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Chad contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1300 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Chad.
Book Synopsis Power and Gender in European Rural Development by : Henk de Haan
Download or read book Power and Gender in European Rural Development written by Henk de Haan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1990s, new public and private actors, emphasizing issues such as landscape, nature, environment and food safety, have challenged EU rural development policies. This book looks at this innovative framework and, in particular, the impacts of the interactions between established interests and newcomers in local power relations. Specific attention has been given to the gendered nature of these processes. Case studies from throughout Western Europe analyze local rural power relations and present overviews of the significance of rural gender relations. The book demonstrates that traditional and new forms of social organization in rural areas create new forms of political participation. Changing forms of social capital and political participation not only influence the relation between state and civil society, but also male-female relationships. The book argues that the dynamics of these gendered power relations produce competing discourses, which can often hinder policy making and implementation.

Book Synopsis Farmer field schools, gender equality, social inclusion and community empowerment by : Chocholata, L.
Download or read book Farmer field schools, gender equality, social inclusion and community empowerment written by Chocholata, L. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senegal has had extensive experience with the development and implementation of the farmer field school (FFS) approach across almost two decades. Building on this experience and that of the first phase of the scoping exercise conducted in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region (and using the same methodology), a field visit took place in order to support the efforts of FAO Senegal in its FFS-related work and assessments, as well as assist with the production and sharing of information at the regional level. The main objective was to collect and analyse the experiences of FFS members, graduates and practitioners in relation to gender equality, social inclusion, and individual and community empowerment, as well as changes to these as a result of participation in an FFS, while also confirming the relevance and/or importance of certain related thematic areas. The purpose of the initiative is to make farmers’ experiences more visible, and not only demonstrate the impact of FFS programmes, but also use these experiences in future implementations of the FFS approach. By identifying gaps in knowledge and opportunities, achievements and challenges, best practices and lessons learned, this exercise aims to provide an insight into and deeper understanding of the FFS’ gender and social dimensions. It offers the opportunity to reflect on this cross-cutting issue to allow these aspects to be better incorporated into the broader FFS discussion and its wider work. The exercise also identifies the needs of FFS facilitators in relation to gender equality, social inclusion and community empowerment, and examines the relevance of related concepts and approaches and its modalities. A review of the existing work on strengthening gender equality and improving access for vulnerable groups within the context of FFS programmes has also been conducted.
Book Synopsis Endogenous Development by : Chiku Malunga
Download or read book Endogenous Development written by Chiku Malunga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western ideas, worldviews, actors, tools, models, and frameworks have long dominated development theory and practice in Africa. The resulting development interventions are too rarely locally rooted, locally driven, or resonant with local context. At the same time, theories and practices from developing countries rarely travel to the Western agencies dominating development, undermining the possibility of a beneficial synergy that could be obtained from the best of both worlds. There are many reasons why the experiences of locally driven development are not communicated back to global development actors, including, but not limited to, the marginal role of Southern voices in global forums. This volume gives a platform to authentic African voices and non-African collaborators, to explore what endogenous development means, how it can be implemented, and how an endogenous development approach can shape local, national and global policies. This book was originally published as a special issue of Development in Practice.
