Download or read book Exchanging Weapons for Development in Mali written by Geofrey Mugumya and published by UN. This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weapons collection programmes seek to reduce the availability of small arms and light weapons in countries affected by conflict situations, by promoting community-based development projects in exchange for the surrender of these guns. This publication considers the experiences and lessons learned from such activities undertaken in Mali, and is based on the role and perceptions of the people directly involved in, and affected by these programmes. It is part of a series of country studies of weapons collections programmes, and a handbook will subsequently be issued which draws together best practices for weapons collection and other related issues.

Book Synopsis Controlling Small Arms by : Peter Batchelor
Download or read book Controlling Small Arms written by Peter Batchelor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume takes stock of the state of research and policy on the issue of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), ten years after the UN first agreed to deal with the problem. The end of the Cold War originated a series of phenomena that would subsequently come to dominate the political agenda. Perhaps most symptomatic of the ensuing environment is the marked escalation in the scale and dynamics of armed violence, driven by the proliferation of SALW. Events in Rwanda, Somalia and Bosnia seared into global consciousness the devastating effects of this phenomenon, and of the necessity to engage actively in its limitation and prevention. This edited volume explores and outlines the research and policy on the SALW issue at this critical juncture. In addition to providing a detailed telling of the genesis and evolution of SALW research and advocacy, the volume features a series of essays from leading scholars in the field on both advances in research and action on SALW. It reflects on what has been achieved in terms of cumulative advances in data, methodology and analysis, and looks at the ways in which these developments have helped to inform policy making at national, regional and international levels. Alongside situating and integrating past and present advances in advocacy and international action, Controlling Small Arms also outlines future directions for research and action. This book will be of much interest to students of small arms, peace and conflict studies, peacebuilding, security studies and IR.

Book Synopsis Peacebuilding, Power, and Politics in Africa by : Devon Curtis
Download or read book Peacebuilding, Power, and Politics in Africa written by Devon Curtis and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peacebuilding, Power, and Politics in Africa is a critical reflection on peacebuilding efforts in Africa. The authors expose the tensions and contradictions in different clusters of peacebuilding activities, including peace negotiations; statebuilding; security sector governance; and disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration. Essays also address the institutional framework for peacebuilding in Africa and the ideological underpinnings of key institutions, including the African Union, NEPAD, the African Development Bank, the Pan-African Ministers Conference for Public and Civil Service, the UN Peacebuilding Commission, the World Bank, and the International Criminal Court. The volume includes on-the-ground case study chapters on Sudan, the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Niger Delta, Southern Africa, and Somalia, analyzing how peacebuilding operates in particular African contexts. The authors adopt a variety of approaches, but they share a conviction that peacebuilding in Africa is not a script that is authored solely in Western capitals and in the corridors of the United Nations. Rather, the writers in this volume focus on the interaction between local and global ideas and practices in the reconstitution of authority and livelihoods after conflict. The book systematically showcases the tensions that occur within and between the many actors involved in the peacebuilding industry, as well as their intended beneficiaries. It looks at the multiple ways in which peacebuilding ideas and initiatives are reinforced, questioned, reappropriated, and redesigned by different African actors. A joint project between the Centre for Conflict Resolution in Cape Town, South Africa, and the Centre of African Studies at the University of Cambridge.

Covering both theory and practice, Dr. Zelizer and his team of leading academics and practitioners present original essays discussing the infrastructure of the peacebuilding field (outlining key actors, donors, and underlying motivations) as well as the ethical dilemmas created by modern conflict. Exploring both the challenges and lessons to be found in this emerging field, Integrated Peacebuilding is perfect for courses on peacebuilding, conflict resolution, international development, and related fields.
Book Synopsis Democracy and Development in Mali by : R. James Bingen
Download or read book Democracy and Development in Mali written by R. James Bingen and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mali, a country rich with history and culture, but one of the poorest in the world, emerged in the 1990s as one of Africa's most vibrant democracies. Strengthened by bold political and economic reforms at home, Mali has emerged as a leader in African peace keeping efforts. How has such a transition taken place? How have these changes built on Mali's rich heritage? These are the questions that the contributors to this volume have addressed. During the past twenty-five years, the scholarly research and applied development work of Michigan State University faculty and students in Mali represents the most significant combined, long-term, and continuing contribution of any group of university faculty in the United States or Europe to the study of Malian society, economy, and politics. The applied nature of much of this work has resulted in a significant number of working papers, reports, and conference presentations. This volume represents a coherent and connected set of essays from one American university with a widely known and highly respected role in African development. While the essays identify and review Mali's unique historical and contemporary path to democracy and development, they also contribute to the advancement of theoretical knowledge about African development.
Book Synopsis Comparative Analysis of Evaluation Methodologies in Weapon Collection Programmes by : Shukuko Koyama
Download or read book Comparative Analysis of Evaluation Methodologies in Weapon Collection Programmes written by Shukuko Koyama and published by UN. This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fourth and final publication to arise from a project entitled "Weapons for Development" and funded by the Government of Japan. This two-year project assessed small arms and light weapons collection programmes in which the incentives provided to people to give up their weapons were based in community development projects. The case studies applied participatory research methods to assess the impact of the post-conflict programmes in Albania, Cambodia and Mali. These UNIDIR evaluations complemented other analyses of weapons for development programmes that used standard, non-participatory research tools. This volume compares the findings of the participatory evaluation method with the standard, non-participatory evaluations that have been conducted on weapons for development programmes.

Book excerpt: This handbook provides critical analyses of the theory and practices of small arms proliferation and its impact on conflicts and organized violence in Africa. It examines the terrains, institutions, factors and actors that drive armed conflict and arms proliferation, and further explores the nature, scope, and dynamics of conflicts across the continent, as well as the extent to which these conflicts are exacerbated by the proliferation of small arms. The volume features rich analyses by contributors who are acquainted with, and widely experienced in, the formal and informal structures of arms proliferation and control, and their repercussions on violence, instability and insecurity across Africa. The chapters dissect the challenges of small arms and light weapons in Africa with a view to understanding roots causes and drivers, and generating a fresh body of analyses that adds value to the existing conversation on conflict management and peacebuilding in Africa. With contributions from scholars, development practitioners, defence and security professionals and civil society activists, the handbook seeks to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and policy makers on small arms proliferation, control and regulation; defence and security practitioners; and those involved in countering violence and managing conflicts in Africa.
