It is subdivided into two parts Part One: A Preamble to the Evolution and Phylogeny of Bees provides a complete and critical review of all previous attempts to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree of bees (Anthophila / Apiformes) based on morphological, bionomic and molecular approaches and pre- sented in chronological sequence up to and including recent publications. At the same time, the introductory part examines trends in the classification of bees and compares available hypotheses of bee evolution. Part One closes with a family-wise delineation of the fossil history of bees. Part Two: A Phylogenetic Study of Bees in Light of Morphological Evidence adds an experimental study to complement the bibliographical analysis provided in Part One. The phylogenetic relationships of the larger taxonomic units of bees are tested anew using an extensive dataset of selected morphological features. The study uses all common and current computer-aided techniques of cladistic analysis (parsimony, successive/implied weight, Bayesian and neighbor-joining), which are applied to representatives of all seven families, 22 subfamilies and 48 of 58 tribes of bees. The conclusions drawn from this are evaluated for the major groups (i.e., short-tongued and long-tongued bees), and separately for the families, subfamilies and tribes in each case. In a world currently dominated by molecular genetic approaches to phylogeny, this study clearly demonstrates that it is not anachronistic to engage in morphological efforts, because progress can be significantly advanced and the pool of available scientific arguments enriched. The diversity of the object of investigation justifies a variety of methods. This monograph is a much needed reference work of high practical value for all students of bee evolution, phylogeny and morphology. Further, it is ideally suited as good introductory reading material for university level students.

Book excerpt: Bombus ephippiatus is one of the most common and widespread bumble bee species throughout Mexico and Central America. This robust and charismatic species possesses a highly variable color pattern throughout its wide distribution across montane and lowland regions, which raises the question of whether or not it is in fact one species. I examined the molecular phylogeny of B. ephippiatus populations and its sister species, B. wilmattae and B. impatiens, with the aims of resolving the species relationships, distinguishing species boundaries and examining correlations between color pattern and phylogeny. I applied DNA sequences from three genes to resolve the species-level phylogeny and to gain insight into the population structure of B. ephippiatus. The results reveal that B. impatiens is the sister group to B. ephippiatus + B. wilmattae. Results also suggest that B. ephippiatus is paraphyletic with respect to B. wilmattae, as B. wilmattae attaches to the Costa Rican B. ephippiatus clade. The B. ephippiatus + B. wilmattae complex appears to be associated with geography and color pattern, providing new insights into the evolutionary history of this complex.

Malyshev, who died from a cerebral haemorrhage on 9 May 1967 at the age of 83 in the train while travelling to field work, was one of the foremost European students of the Hymenoptera, in particular of the habits of solitary bees, a subject on which he had published many papers since 1908, mostly in Russian. In 1935 he published an important paper on part of his work, and I helped to edit the publication, which was in English. A few years ago some of my friends in California asked me if I could not persuade him to complete his early paper on solitary bees, offering if necessary to arrange for a translation. When I wrote to Professor Malyshev making this suggestion he no longer had the health to produce a new work, but he sent me a copy of his recent book on the evolution of the Hymenoptera which he thought might be worth trans lating. Sir Boris Uvarov was good enough to translate for me the chapter and section headings, and it seemed to both of us that a lot of new ground was covered in a highly original way. The explanation of the changes in behaviour that must have taken place when the simple, plant-feeding saw flies developed into highly specialized parasites or into industrious, food collecting, social insects such as the ants, bees, and wasps can well be regarded as one of the major challenges to zoologists.

The family is notable for having some of the most important pollinators of managed crops, yet also comprises a rich diversity of social and parasitic lifestyles, host plant affinities, and ecosystem services. Despite its importance, relationships among the tribes within Apidae remain unclear. To date, rigorous phylogenetic analysis has been challenged by long-standing assumptions about the relatedness of cleptoparasitic groups in relation to their hosts. I performed the first large-scale phylogenetic study of the family Apidae based on DNA sequence data, including representative taxa from all 33 apid tribes. I then used this phylogeny to investigate the origins and antiquity of cleptoparasitism and sociality. Results indicate that most cleptoparasitic apid bees form a monophyletic group, and therefore stem from a single origin of cleptoparasitism (with two more origins in the Euglossini orchid bees and one in the tribe Ctenoplectrini). Divergence time analysis using a relaxed fossilcalibrated molecular clock model reveals that cleptoparasitism is an ancient behavior in apid bees that first evolved ~100 Ma. Results also indicate that primitive eusociality is the ancestral state for corbiculate Apidae, and that orchid bees represent a reversal from eusociality to solitary, communal, and weakly social behavior. According to my divergence time analysis, eusociality first evolved ~87 Ma in the corbiculates, much earlier than in other groups of bees. To date the origin of bees and their major clades, I performed a phylogenetic analysis of bees including representatives from every subfamily, and almost all tribes, using sequence data from seven genes. I then conducted a fossil-calibrated relaxed clock divergence time analysis. I estimate that bees originated at the start of the Aptian, concurrently with the origin of the eudicot angiosperms. All of the major bee clades are estimated to have originated during the middle to late Cretaceous, which is when angiosperms diversified to becom the dominant group of land plants. This study firmly establishes temporal overlap in the diversification of bees and angiosperms, a necessary precondition for the role of bees in the angiosperms' rise to dominance during the late Cretaceous.
