Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “As a world authority on insect anatomy, Snodgrass has given us this book a brilliant account of the anatomy of the honey bee and how it relates to the way that bees develop and how and why they function as they do in their interesting communal life. This book should be in the library of every student of the honey bee and bee behaviour—beekeepers as well as scientists. The book is delightfully written and is enjoyable reading.”—American Bee Journal “This is not just a technical reference book on honey bee anatomy. It is far more, it is essentially a treatise on entomology, using one species as an example, and including a discussion of the fundamentals of embryology, development, and metamorphosis as well as anatomy. The subject of each chapter is approached from the broadest evolutionary point of view, and its horizon includes all the arthropods and beyond, so that the bee really typifies animal life in general. Finally, the language of the book is such that it can be read straight through with pleasure....It is a delight to follow the author through this complete examination of one insect: how it develops, how it grows, and how it operates.”—Entomological News

Book excerpt: Briana Williams became a viral sensation at twenty-four years old as a single mother, who took her final exam while in labor and graduated from Harvard Law School with her one-year-old baby in tow. The world wondered how it had all been possible? Nothing about the journey was easy but without question worth it. The Anatomy of the Honey Bee is the intimate, and intentionally unguarded offering of the darker side of success and the chronicle of a haunting relationship, infiltrated by love, abuse, loss, and redemption. Raw emotion depicted through a series of diary entries, letters and mantras developed while in the flames of vulnerability attests to the fact that the road traveled towards success is never as beautiful as the final destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ancient cave paintings of honey bee nests to modern science’s richly diversified investigation of honey bee biology and its applications, the human imagination has long been captivated by the mysterious and highly sophisticated behavior of this paragon among insect societies. In the first broad treatment of honey bee biology to appear in decades, Mark Winston provides rare access to the world of this extraordinary insect. In a bright and engaging style, Winston probes the dynamics of the honey bee’s social organization. He recreates for us the complex infrastructure of the nest, describes the highly specialized behavior of workers, queens, and drones, and examines in detail the remarkable ability of the honey bee colony to regulate its functions according to events within and outside the nest. Winston integrates into his discussion the results of recent studies, bringing into sharp focus topics of current bee research. These include the exquisite architecture of the nest and its relation to bee physiology; the intricate division of labor and the relevance of a temporal caste structure to efficient functioning of the colony; and, finally, the life-death struggles of swarming, supersedure, and mating that mark the reproductive cycle of the honey bee. The Biology of the Honey Bee not only reviews the basic aspects of social behavior, ecology, anatomy, physiology, and genetics, it also summarizes major controversies in contemporary honey bee research, such as the importance of kin recognition in the evolution of social behavior and the role of the well-known dance language in honey bee communication. Thorough, well-illustrated, and lucidly written, this book will for many years be a valuable resource for scholars, students, and beekeepers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dr Lesley Goodman finally lost her fight against lung cancer in 1998, she left behind her vision for an accessible, authoritative reference work for bee scientists, undergraduates and beekeepers. Form and Function in the Honey Bee is the fruition of her work - a posthumous tribute to her life and interests. Containing over 340 diagrams, micrographs and colour illustrations, Form and Function works equally well as an expert guide to the physiology and anatomy of the honey bee, and as an introduction to this fascinating field for students and others. The chapters take the reader through the major structures and activities of the honey bee - the antennae, compound eyes, dorsal ocelli, the bee's response to gravity, feeding, respiration, flight, glands and colony defence are all examined in detail to give the reader a comprehensive understanding of how and why the honey bee behaves as it does. The book has been completed posthumously by Prof. Richard J Cooter, Chair of the L J Goodman Insect Physiology Trust, and Dr Pamela Munn, Deputy Director of the International Bee Research Association. Chapters 1. The antennal sense organs: smelling, tasting, touching and hearing in the bee 2. Vision in the bee: the compound eye 3. The dorsal ocelli: the bee's second set of eyes 4. The bee's response to gravity: which way is up? 5. Feeding: 1. Using the mouthparts 2. Tasting the food 3. Collecting the pollen 6. Respiration: how do bees breathe? 7. Flight: wings, aerodynamics, sensory control and metabolism 8. Glands: chemical communication and wax production 9. Defending the colony: the sting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Studies on the anatomy of the bee have not been lacking, for many good workers have taken up this subject for investigation. The popular demand for such information, however, has induced untrained men to write on the subject, and most accounts of bee anatomy contain numerous errors. This is probably to a greater extent true of the anatomy of the bee than of that of any other insect. Frequently the illustrations used by men not trained in anatomical work are more artistic than those usually found in papers on insect anatomy, and they consequently bear the superficial marks of careful work, but too often it is found that the details are in accurate. It has therefore seemed the right time for a new presenta tion of this subject based on careful work. The drawings given in the present paper are original, with the exception of figures 12, 54, and 55, and have been prepared with a thorough realization of the need of more accurate illustrations of the organs of the bee, especially of the internal organs. Mistakes will possibly be found, but the reader may be assured that all the parts drawn were seen. Most of the dissections, moreover, were verified by Dr. E. F. Phillips and Dr. J. A. Nelson, of this Bureau, before the drawings were made from them. An explanation of the abbreviations and lettering is given on pages 139 - 147. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraspecific communication involves the activation of chemoreceptors and subsequent activation of different central areas that coordinate the responses of the entire organism—ranging from behavioral modification to modulation of hormones release. Animals emit intraspecific chemical signals, often referred to as pheromones, to advertise their presence to members of the same species and to regulate interactions aimed at establishing and regulating social and reproductive bonds. In the last two decades, scientists have developed a greater understanding of the neural processing of these chemical signals. Neurobiology of Chemical Communication explores the role of the chemical senses in mediating intraspecific communication. Providing an up-to-date outline of the most recent advances in the field, it presents data from laboratory and wild species, ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates, from insects to humans. The book examines the structure, anatomy, electrophysiology, and molecular biology of pheromones. It discusses how chemical signals work on different mammalian and non-mammalian species and includes chapters on insects, Drosophila, honey bees, amphibians, mice, tigers, and cattle. It also explores the controversial topic of human pheromones. An essential reference for students and researchers in the field of pheromones, this is also an ideal resource for those working on behavioral phenotyping of animal models and persons interested in the biology/ecology of wild and domestic species.
