Book excerpt: The principal weakness in the performance evaluation of water treatment filtration technology for particle removal to date has been the failure to characterize the particles in suspension in influent and treated water. The direct microscopic count may be used in water treatment plants to evaluate total bacterial removals, observe seasonal (temperature) effects on water treatment plant process efficiency and estimate the removal of planktonic versus particle-associated bacteria. Comparisons between the direct microscopic count and turbidity, total coliform, heterotrophic plate count and electronic particle counting are made based on recent studies at the Capital City Water Treatment Plant, Jefferson City, Missouri. The direct microscopic count yields information on the reduction of total bacterial cells, planktonic and particle-associated bacteria, algal cells, nematodes and total number of particles larger than 3.0 ?m. The removal of the turbidity causing solids does not correspond to the reduction of biotic particles. As a result there are marked differences in turbidity and microbial reductions during treatment. The direct microscopic count has been judged to provide one of the most basic and fundamental measures of bacterial ecology because it provides an estimate of total bacterial population. Since it has been previously demonstrated to be rapid, specific, sensitive and accurate, it has now begun to find application in observing the removals of a wide range of particles during water treatment.

Book excerpt: This book presents the basic principles for evaluating water quality and treatment plant performance in a clear, innovative and didactic way, using a combined approach that involves the interpretation of monitoring data associated with (i) the basic processes that take place in water bodies and in water and wastewater treatment plants and (ii) data management and statistical calculations to allow a deep interpretation of the data. This book is problem-oriented and works from practice to theory, covering most of the information you will need, such as (a) obtaining flow data and working with the concept of loading, (b) organizing sampling programmes and measurements, (c) connecting laboratory analysis to data management, (e) using numerical and graphical methods for describing monitoring data (descriptive statistics), (f) understanding and reporting removal efficiencies, (g) recognizing symmetry and asymmetry in monitoring data (normal and log-normal distributions), (h) evaluating compliance with targets and regulatory standards for effluents and water bodies, (i) making comparisons with the monitoring data (tests of hypothesis), (j) understanding the relationship between monitoring variables (correlation and regression analysis), (k) making water and mass balances, (l) understanding the different loading rates applied to treatment units, (m) learning the principles of reaction kinetics and reactor hydraulics and (n) performing calibration and verification of models. The major concepts are illustrated by 92 fully worked-out examples, which are supported by 75 freely-downloadable Excel spreadsheets. Each chapter concludes with a checklist for your report. If you are a student, researcher or practitioner planning to use or already using treatment plant and water quality monitoring data, then this book is for you! 75 Excel spreadsheets are available to download.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Management Challenges in Global Change contains the proceedings of the 9th Computing and Control for the Water Industry (CCWI2007) and the Sustainable Urban Water Management (SUWM2007) conferences. The rationale behind these conferences is to improve the management of urban water systems through the development of computerbased methods. Issues such as economic globalisation, climate changes and water shortages call for a new approach to water systems management, which addresses the relevant technical, social and economic aspects. This collection represents the views of academic and industrial experts from a number of countries, who provide technical solutions to current water management problems and present a vision for addressing the global questions. The themes underlying many of the contributions include energy and material savings, water savings and the integration of different aspects of water management. The papers are grouped into three themes covering water distribution systems, sustainable urban water management and modelling of wastewater treatment plants. The water distribution topics cover asset and information management, planning, monitoring and control, hydraulic modelling of steady state and transients, water quality and treatment, demand and leakage management, optimisation, design and decision support systems, as well as reliability and security of water distribution systems. The sustainable urban water management topics include urban drainage systems, water reuse, social aspects of water management and also selected facets of water resources and irrigation. Computer control of wastewater treatment plants has been seen as less advanced than that of clean water systems. To address this imbalance, this book presents a number of modelling techniques developed specifically for these plants. Water Management Challenges in Global Change will prove to be invaluable to water and environmental engineering researchers and academics; managers, engineers and planners; and postgraduate students.
