Book Synopsis Intensive Supervision for High-risk Probationers by : Joan Petersilia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986, with the help of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, three California counties (Los Angeles, Ventura, and Contra Costa) designed an experiment to implement intensive supervision probation (ISP) programs as an alternative form of supervision for high-risk probationers. This report focuses on the outcomes of the three ISP programs. The California ISPs had higher failure rates than ISP programs in other states. The findings indicate that this higher failure rate occurred because the offenders in the California demonstration samples were more serious and at higher risk of recidivism. Moreover, the California ISP participants had arrest rates virtually identical to those for offenders on routine probation or parole. The results suggest that ISP programs, as implemented in this study, are not effective for high-risk offenders--if effectiveness is judged solely by recidivism rates. In addition, greater emphasis on drug treatment is particularly important for ISP.

Book excerpt: "Jeanne Stinchcomb’s book makes an excellent contribution to the field of corrections serving as a substantial resource for those teaching corrections and as a practical inspiration for those students who will ultimately lead the profession. Stinchomb carefully crafts a balanced perspective that presents a powerful argument for why corrections is an important and necessary part of our criminal justice system while at the same time cautioning that justice can only be served when corrections is implemented with integrity and held to the highest of professional standards....This book will dare those who care about corrections to move beyond the ease of accepting the status quo to optimistically embracing the greater challenges of implementing a just and effective system of corrections." – Faith E. Book Synopsis Community Risk and Protective Factors for Probation and Parole Risk Assessment Tools: Emerging Research and Opportunities by : Dorch, Edwina Louise
Download or read book Community Risk and Protective Factors for Probation and Parole Risk Assessment Tools: Emerging Research and Opportunities written by Dorch, Edwina Louise and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The staff in probation agencies rely heavily on a long list of case plan agreements to get their clients to obey the laws. Yet, the list of rules create overwhelming challenges for those on probation and parole, especially those who suffer from drug addiction, mental illness, and physical and cognitive disabilities. Though millions of dollars in grants and funding continue to be provided as a solution, the rate of recidivism is still rising. Community Risk and Protective Factors for Probation and Parole Risk Assessment Tools: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential research publication that explores tools for predicting recidivism rates among incarcerated individuals. The study provides evidence for an alternative explanation for a still prevailing notion that recidivism is primarily a result of personal/internal failings (such as mental illness or cognitive impairment) versus external/societal ones. Featuring a wide range of topics such as affordable housing, policy reform, and adult education, this book is ideal for criminologists, sociologists, law enforcement, corrections officers, wardens, therapists, rehabilitation counselors, researchers, policymakers, criminal justice professionals, academicians, and students.
