Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of the impacts of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) treatments is at an early, but important stage. The national-level focus on a "few good measures" provides a standard, systematic method for understanding a variety of programs and projects. This report presents an expanded process and measures for considering the effect of ITS investments. A series of questions are proposed to bring out the potential effects of ITS programs that may not be analyzed due to relatively little data or complex relationships. This particularly relates to subject areas unfamiliar to the public sector transport agencies that typically are in charge of ITS deployment. These groups have little experience with logistics, supply chains, or business restructuring concepts. The report also recommends expanding one goal and adding another. It suggests that local goals be identified and studied as a way of exploring important attributes and developing future plans. The important factors might be better analyzed and incorporated with a multi-criteria analysis approach, rather than the traditional benefit/cost analysis. This approach will also allow the local concerns to be addressed in a more "customized" process and produce the statistics needed to compare local projects with national standards and results

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.

Book excerpt: Stough (public policy, George Mason U.) brings together nine contributions that evaluate the prospects for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to solve the dilemma caused by increasing demands for mobility combined with reluctance to continue to build traditional transportation infrastructure such as highways. These systems encompass a complex of information technologies. The chapters offer case studies of systems deployed in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and use multi-criteria methodologies to evaluate the cost- effectiveness of the programs. Electronic tolling systems, variable message signs, automatic truck rollover warning systems, and several other technologies are discussed and evaluated. The final chapter applies simulation modeling to estimate the effects the addition of several ITS technologies will have on congestion and mobility in the Northern Virginia region. c. Book News Inc.

Book excerpt: Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.

Book excerpt: The 17 chapters in this book, which evolved from a conference on measuring the contributions of ITS sponsored by the California Department of Transportation in February 2002, examine the costs and benefits of ITS in an economic and business policy context. Section 1 examines the broad theme of how and what ITS contributes to the economy and how one makes a business case for ITS. Section 2 includes three chapters on ITS applications in mass transit. Section 3 explores ITS applications in the automobile/highway system. Section 4 considers integrative issues including how ITS is perceived and how it can be positioned to improve surface transportation. This volume will be especially useful to researchers and policy makers working in transportation, transportation engineering, and the economic analysis of transportation systems.

Why is it important to have senior management support for a Intelligent Transportation System project? Will Intelligent Transportation System deliverables need to be tested and, if so, by whom? What potential environmental factors impact the Intelligent Transportation System effort? Think about the kind of project structure that would be appropriate for your Intelligent Transportation System project. should it be formal and complex, are can it be less formal and relatively simple? Defining, designing, creating, and implementing a process to solve a business challenge or meet a business objective is the most valuable role... In EVERY company, organization and department. Unless you are talking a one-time, single-use project within a business, there should be a process. Whether that process is managed and implemented by humans, AI, or a combination of the two, it needs to be designed by someone with a complex enough perspective to ask the right questions. Someone capable of asking the right questions and step back and say, 'What are we really trying to accomplish here? And is there a different way to look at it?' For more than twenty years, The Art of Service's Self-Assessments empower people who can do just that - whether their title is marketer, entrepreneur, manager, salesperson, consultant, business process manager, executive assistant, IT Manager, CxO etc... - they are the people who rule the future. They are people who watch the process as it happens, and ask the right questions to make the process work better. This book is for managers, advisors, consultants, specialists, professionals and anyone interested in Intelligent Transportation System assessment. Featuring 610 new and updated case-based questions, organized into seven core areas of process design, this Self-Assessment will help you identify areas in which Intelligent Transportation System improvements can be made. In using the questions you will be better able to: - diagnose Intelligent Transportation System projects, initiatives, organizations, businesses and processes using accepted diagnostic standards and practices - implement evidence-based best practice strategies aligned with overall goals - integrate recent advances in Intelligent Transportation System and process design strategies into practice according to best practice guidelines Using a Self-Assessment tool known as the Intelligent Transportation System Scorecard, you will develop a clear picture of which Intelligent Transportation System areas need attention. Included with your purchase of the book is the Intelligent Transportation System Self-Assessment downloadable resource, containing all 610 questions and Self-Assessment areas of this book. This helps with ease of (re-)use and enables you to import the questions in your preferred Management or Survey Tool. Access instructions can be found in the book. You are free to use the Self-Assessment contents in your presentations and materials for customers without asking us - we are here to help. The Art of Service has helped hundreds of clients to improve execution and meet the needs of customers better by applying business process redesign.
