Book excerpt: El propósito de este estudio es el desarrollo de un procedimiento de evaluación de programas de formación de profesores de educación superior que incluya a la autoevaluación y los datos producto de investigación, que se prepare y atienda a las recomendaciones de las evaluaciones externas de tipo local, nacional e internacional para estar en condiciones de lograr una acreditación u homologación válida internacionalmente. La evaluación se desarrolla en aras de la calidad educativa, centrada en el programa específico de formación, considerada desde el currículo y en los logros de los alumnos del programa, con miras al cambio educativo. Se lleva a efecto con un programa de formación de profesores en educación superior en México, el de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. La investigación de tipo ex post facto, se ha realizado con profesores de nuevo ingreso y profesores egresados del programa y se ha hecho uso de diversos marcos teóricos en educación, como son: el desarrollo de programas de acuerdo con un estándar, de competencias en los profesionales y en los estadios de preocupación de los profesores; de procedimientos de autoevaluación del programa y de las características que influyen en la satisfacción y en la valoración de la calidad del programa. Se ha buscado contrastar la aplicabilidad de instrumentos diseñados para apreciar el desarrollo en las fases de preocupaciones profesionales. El programa también es analizado de acuerdo con algunas propuestas de asociaciones profesionales internacionales de desarrollar una estandarización para los programas. Se ha enfocado en datos que aportan información sustancial para la valoración de la calidad del programa, encontrándose cierta relevancia en los indicadores de la calidad de los profesores egresados y expertos, de acuerdo con los diversos análisis estadísticos realizados, como son: los descriptivos, las correlaciones, el contraste de medias, el análisis de varianza, el análisis factorial, el análisis discriminante y la regresión lineal múltiple.

John Nicholls explores the conditions that cause students to lose their unselfconscious involvement in a game or task and become concerned with how they are stacking up against others. Charting the development of children's concepts of luck, effort, and ability, he argues that with age they are increasingly prone to take superiority over others as the definition of success. An emphasis on interpersonal competition, which permeates Western society, exacerbates this egotistical tendency and results in diminished accomplishment and alienation from school. To overcome these problems, Nicholls argues, we must "become as little children" for whom absorption in exploration and accomplishment come naturally, even when those around them are more competent. This ideal is unlikely to be promoted through technical approaches to education, or by the current emphasis on the role of education in economic development. Instead, Nicholls calls for a progressive approach to education. Difficult though it is to implement, this approach is most likely to increase equality of motivation for intellectual development, substantial accomplishment, satisfaction in work, and more productive relations with others. These are important ideas for anyone interested in achievement motivation, for those professionally involved in education, and for nonspecialists interested in, or worried about, how we educate our children.
