Book Synopsis Economic Convergence in the Euro Area: Coming Together or Drifting Apart? by : Mr.Jeffrey R. Franks
Download or read book Economic Convergence in the Euro Area: Coming Together or Drifting Apart? written by Mr.Jeffrey R. Franks and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine economic convergence among euro area countries on multiple dimensions. While there was nominal convergence of inflation and interest rates, real convergence of per capita income levels has not occurred among the original euro area members since the advent of the common currency. Income convergence stagnated in the early years of the common currency and has reversed in the wake of the global economic crisis. New euro area members, in contrast, have seen real income convergence. Business cycles became more synchronized, but the amplitude of those cycles diverged. Financial cycles showed a similar pattern: sychronizing more over time, but with divergent amplitudes. Income convergence requires reforms boosting productivity growth in lagging countries, while cyclical and financial convergence can be enhanced by measures to improve national and euro area fiscal policies, together with steps to deepen the single market.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the euro area getting closer with regard to business cycles? The study investigates the linkage between business cycle convergence and financial portfolio choice for a panel of 18 European countries. For this purpose an index is constructed which measures the similarity of investment portfolios. The idea is that financial portfolio choice has an impact on business cycles and contributes to convergence via the consumption-wealth linkage. The background of the analysis is the International Asset Pricing Model (IAPM). The results of fixed effects GMM TSLS estimations confirm the linkage. The effect is higher for country-pairs that are built by one euro area member and one member outside the euro area.

This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume analyses how EU membership influenced the convergence process of member countries in the Baltics, Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. It also explores countries that are candidates for future EU membership. The speed of convergence of significant groups of low- and medium-income countries has never been as fast globally as it is today. Contributions by lead researchers of the area explore whether these countries are converging faster than their fundamentals and global trends would suggest because of EU membership, with its much tighter institutional and political anchorage
Book Synopsis Europe and the Euro by : Alberto Alesina
Download or read book Europe and the Euro written by Alberto Alesina and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare for countries to give up their currencies and thus their ability to influence such critical aspects of their economies as interest and exchange rates. Yet ten years ago a number of European countries did exactly that when they adopted the euro. Despite some dissent, there were a number of arguments in favor of this policy change: it would facilitate exchange of goods, money, and people by decreasing costs; it would increase trade; and it would enhance efficiency and competitiveness at the international level. A decade is an ideal time frame over which to evaluate the success of the euro and whether it has lived up to expectations. To that aim, Europe and the Euro looks at a number of important issues, including the effects of the euro on reform of goods and labor markets; its influence on business cycles and trade among members; and whether the single currency has induced convergence or divergence in the economic performance of member countries. While adoption of the euro may not have met the expectations of its most optimistic proponents, the benefits have been many, and there is reason to believe that the euro is robust enough to survive recent economic shocks. This volume is an essential reference on the first ten years of the euro and the workings of a monetary union.

Book excerpt: What policies should be pursued by, first, the peripheral countries, like Greece and Eastern Europe, and, second, by the median countries, like Spain, to qualify for monetary union? How should the core countries coordinate their fiscal policies once in a monetary union? This book considers the widening and deepening process of European integration and is based on work carried out for DG II of the European Commission in 1992-05. The conclusions reached for the median countries were endorsed by the finance ministers in Verona in 1996.
Book Synopsis The Segmentation of Europe by : Mark Baimbridge
Download or read book The Segmentation of Europe written by Mark Baimbridge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores economic developments across Europe in relation to its apparent segmentation, as disparities widen between core and periphery countries. In contrast to previous literature, the scope of analysis is extended to Europe as a continent rather than confining it solely to the European Union, thereby providing the reader with greater insight into the core/periphery nexus. The authors commence with a critical appraisal of economic thinking in relation to regional trade agreements and monetary integration. In relation to a number of EU economies, the book addresses issues of a liquidity trap, deflation, and twin deficits, together with the interconnection between exchange rates and current account balances. Importantly, they extend the discussion of segmentation through a series of focused case studies on Russia, Brexit and emergence of the mega-regionals.

Book Synopsis Euro Area Policies by : International Monetary Fund. European Dept.
Download or read book Euro Area Policies written by International Monetary Fund. European Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the convergence performance of euro area countries before and after euro introduction. The analysis compares per capita incomes across countries, both for the initial group of twelve countries that adopted the euro before 2002 (the so-called EA-12) as well as the current group of 19 euro area members (EA-19). The convergence process has stalled since the introduction of the euro, except for new euro area members which reduced their income gaps vis-à-vis the founding members until their adoption of the common currency. The convergence of income levels is not a prerequisite for a functioning monetary union, but has been considered an important objective of the European economic integration process. Lagging productivity growth in countries with lower initial GDP per capita is found to be the main explanation for the lack of convergence, suggesting that structural reforms can help to restart the convergence process.
Book Synopsis Analysis of European and UK Business Cycles and Shocks by : Michael J. Artis
Download or read book Analysis of European and UK Business Cycles and Shocks written by Michael J. Artis and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is part of a set of 18 documents which have been prepared by H.M. Treasury to inform the assessment of the Government's five economic tests for Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) entry into the euro area. In relation to the first test, this study presents a literature review regarding convergence tests based on business cycle and shock correlations, updating some previous work. Aspects considered include: what is meant by convergence, and the role of business cycle measurement and the identification of shocks in this context; UK convergence with the euro area, the EU and some of the principal member states; 'UK idiosyncrasy' which involves comparisons between the UK experience compared to Europe and the United States; and the optimal currency area (OCA) theory.
Book Synopsis Regional Convergence in the European Union by : Juan R. Cuadrado-Roura
Download or read book Regional Convergence in the European Union written by Juan R. Cuadrado-Roura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-04-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are some regions in the European Union 'winners'of economic integration? And why are others 'losers'? This book explores these important questions and examines the relationship between economic integration, regional convergence, and divergence. In doing so it gives an overview of the most recent evolution of regional disparities in the EU. Central and peripheral regions are analysed as well as those in a re-conversion economic process. The authors address the question of whether regions tend to converge or not from different points of view. They particularly assess the impact of the Monetary Union on regional economies from theoretical and empirical approaches. Other important aspects covered include: the European regional policy, the effects of structural funds and the reforms needed. No doubt, this is an excellent book for anybody interested in learning more about regional trends and prospects in an increasingly integrated world.
