Book excerpt: Spiraling into God: Bonaventure on Grace, Hierarchy, and Holiness offers a systematic account of the Seraphic Doctor's doctrine of grace across his speculative-academic, mystical, hagiographical, and pastoral texts. It does so by arguing that an account of this kind can only be provided by also attending to his theology of hierarchy, a methodology derived from Bonaventure's claim in the Major Legend of St. Francis that Francis of Assisi was a "vir hierarchicus," or hierarchical man. As the book explores in great depth, this appellation relies upon Bonaventure's reading of a Victorine Dionysian interpreter by the name of Thomas Gallus, whose "angelic anthropology"--or notion of the hierarchical soul--becomes a crucial component within the Seraphic Doctor's teaching on grace as he interprets the sanctity of St. Francis. Throughout the course of his career, Bonaventure will define sanctifying grace as a created "inflowing" (influential) that "hierarchizes" human beings by purifying, illuminating, and perfecting them from within, thus causing them to become a similitude of the Trinity. This book explains what this means and why it matters. Most existing scholarship on this subject in Bonaventure's thought interprets it as a subtopic with respect to other themes--for example, with respect to his Christology or his Trinitarian theology--rather than taking the time to understand his doctrine of grace in its own right. Alternatively, scholarly treatments of his doctrine of grace will treat it at length, but will only examine the topic as it appears in his more speculative-academic texts--most especially his Commentary on the Sentences or his famous Itinerarium Mentis in Deum--without bringing these into conversation with his pastoral works, sermon literature, or hagiographical texts. Spiraling Into God provides the first unified treatment of Bonaventure's doctrine of grace across all these different genres of his known corpus, and in so doing, fills a massive lacuna in both Bonaventurean scholarship and in the field of medieval historical theology.

Book excerpt: Knowledge, Love, and Ecstasy in the Theology of Thomas Gallus provides the first full study of Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) in English and represents a significant advance in his distinctive theology. Boyd Taylor Coolman argues that Gallus distinguishes, but never separates and intimately relates two international modalities in human consciousness: the intellective and the affective, both of which are forms of cognition. Coolman shows that Gallus conceives these two cognitive modalities as co-existing in an interdependent manner, and that this reciprocity is given a particular character by Gallus anthropological appropriation of the Dionysian concept of hierarchy. Because Gallus conceives of the soul as hierarchized on the model of the angelic hierarchy, the intellect-affect relationship is fundamentally governed by the dynamism of a Dionysian hierarchy, which has two simultaneous trajectories: ascending and descending. Two crucial features are noteworthy in this regard: in ascending, firstly, the lower is subsumed by the higher; in descending, secondly, the higher communicates with the lower, according to the nature of the lower. When Gallus posits a higher, affective cognitio above an intellective cognitio at the highest point in the ascent, accordingly, this higher affective form both builds upon and sublimates the lower intellective form. At the same time, this affective cognitio descends back down into the soul, both enriching its properly intellective capacity and also renewing the ascending movement in love. For Gallus, then, in the hierarchized soul a dynamic mutuality between intellect and affect emerges, which he construes as a spiralling motion, by which the soul unceasingly stretches beyond itself, ecstatically, in knowing and loving God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading has become a problem--not just of attention, comprehension, or growing rates of illiteracy, but of politics, society, and religion. The questions of how and what to read are not just matters of taste. Answers are often indicative of one's entire view of culture, church, and the cosmos, as well as the impasses of religion, reason, and moral vision. As a result, reading has become?divisive and uninspiring.?Reading has become a drag. The Mystified Letter offers?a hopeful alternative to this malaise--a?theology of reading?centered on mystical encounter. It retrieves medieval Christian reading culture to build a constructive case for a?mystical theology of literature.?? The?mystification?of literature in twelfth- and thirteenth-century monasteries and schools involved rhetorical, aesthetic, liturgical, and theological strategies that invested reading with a sense of ineffability and unintelligibility, wonder and awe, a disposition that applied not only to sacred but even secular literature. The Mystified Letter explores how litera (a Latin term meaning both "the letter" and "literature"?itself) came to be a site of the sacred. By showing how medieval theologians, especially the Victorine monks of Paris, came to see the letter as a vehicle for encounter with the unknowable, unspeakable, and illegible?God, The Mystified Letter shows how the practice of mystical reading can treat some of the spiritual ailments affecting both the?church and?the academy, and explores how we can foster reading cultures around the mystified letter today.

Book excerpt: Mystical Theology and Platonism in the Time of Cusanus engages with the history of mystical theology and Neoplatonic philosophy through the lens of the 15th century philosopher and theologian, Nicholas of Cusa. The volume comprises nineteen essays that break down the barriers between medieval and Renaissance studies, reinterpreting Cusanus’ place in the history of thought by exploring the archive that informed his thinking, while also interrogating his works by exploring them from the standpoint of their later reception by modern philosophers and theologians. The volume also offers tribute to the career of Donald F. Duclow, a leading scholar in the field of Cusanus studies in particular and of the history of mystical theology and Neoplatonic philosophy more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how the living soul can attain eternal peace and hence eternal life as a living soul would yield it when abiding in the Lord Jesus Christ. Tapping the Lords Prayer as the authorized spiritual vehicle to communicate with God, this book attests that the name of the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation, the seal of salvation, and the bearing point to overcome the world. By showing the intrinsic relationship of the invisible with the manifested world, the heavenly and the earthly, this book lucidly defines why the soul should glorify God as an end to lifes purpose while seeking righteousness and fulfilling the commandments. By presenting ground breaking revelations about the spiritual realm and hence the living God through the spiritual compass, this book would help the reader to discern wisdom about how to worship the Lord in truth and spirit to see the glimpse of eternal life and enjoy eternal peace, not as the world offers it but as the Lord Jesus confers it on the living soul.

Book excerpt: From the visual and textual art of Anglo-Saxon England onwards, images held a surprising power in the Western Christian tradition. Not only did these artistic representations provide images through which to find God, they also held mystical potential, and likewise mystical writing, from the early medieval period onwards, is also filled with images of God that likewise refracts and reflects His glory. This collection of essays introduces the currents of thought and practice that underpin this artistic engagement with Western Christian mysticism, and explores the continued link between art and theology. The book features contributions from an international panel of leading academics, and is divided into four sections. The first section offers theoretical and philosophical considerations of mystical aesthetics and the interplay between mysticism and art. The final three sections investigate this interplay between the arts and mysticism from three key vantage points. The purpose of the volume is to explore this rarely considered yet crucial interface between art and mysticism. It is therefore an important and illuminating collection of scholarship that will appeal to scholars of theology and Christian mysticism as much as those who study literature, the arts and art history.

Book excerpt: In the book, God and His Coexistent Relations to the Universe, the author is rejecting the universe that Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein have accepted for a long period. To replace this old universe, an improved universe appeared from the thoughts of Confucius, Anaxagoras, Plato, and Jesus, who taught the death of our sun in Ch. 24 of Matthew. Unfortunately, this teaching by Jesus was quieted for fifteen centuries by Irenaeus, until Copernicus stood up and said that earth is not the center of the universe. So, an improved universe was becoming very interesting to many scientists.. This improved universe of Copernicus would expand when Kepler found that our sun has a system of eight precise planets. Slowly, the improved universe would become very clear when Leibniz found the immortal human souls and when Galileo found the bodies are made by these immortal souls. In 1766, Ben Franklin went to Germany in order to learn the immortal souls of Leibniz. In the next ten years, Americans would separate America from England, which still accepts the old universe. After this separation, more discoveries would come to the USA from German and Chinese thoughts. For example, Riemann would tell the world that the relationships of bodies in the universe can be determined only by our senses and measurements. With Riemanns statement, the author concluded that God is always active. The author also found that God and the bodies in the universe come together with co-existent concepts. With these advances, the author rejects the old universe and says that the people of many nations will form a new religion under an active God.

Book excerpt: THE GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK The general purpose of this book is to build the minds of all Little Gods, who were created by God, who also created the universe. About 4.4 million years ago, Little Gods appeared on planet earth. Today, billions of Little Gods exist and have developed their minds after they found that God and the universe have no end. However, the minds of all Little Gods did not develop until counting tokens appeared about 9,000 years ago. Then, 5000 years later, the Little Gods added symbols to these tokens. These symbols were used in early texts and later in national languages, religious scriptures, scientific books, newspapers, etc. For the last 4000 years, many religious leaders were saying that the symbols in scriptures are sacred and are inspired by God. In 2006, I found that God is infinite and unlimited. Six years later, I found that symbols are finite and limited. These findings prove that scriptures cannot be sacred. I confirmed these findings with new research on Greek writings and the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. In time, I expect all Little Gods to worship the same God. The purpose of my book is thus to bring all Little Gods together under one God.

The Path to Immortality shows that immortality means total liberation from the duality of this world and absolute freedom through spiritual mastery and higher consciousness. Immortality, it shows, is your divine right and the destiny of your soul. This far-reaching work unfolds metaphysical truths about the law of cycles and the seven “bodies” of man, the planes of consciousness, the inner working of the chakras and the flow of energy through them. It also explores what the soul is and how we can take care of it, the meaning of the “fiery trial,” dangers that confront the soul on the homeward path and tools to deal with them."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discussion with Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Franz Fischer and Emmanuel Levinas, Ephraim Meir outlines a novel conception of a selfhood that is grounded in dialogical thought. He focuses on the shaping of identity in present day societies and offers a new view on identity around the concepts of self-transcendence, self-difference, and trans-difference. Subjectivity is seen as the concrete possibility of relating to an open identity, which receives and hosts alterity. Self-difference is the crown upon the I; it is the result of a dialogical life, a life of passing to the other. The religious I is perceived as in dialogue with secularity, with its own past and with other persons. It is suggested that with a dialogical approach one may discover what unites people in pluralist societies.
