Book excerpt: Spiraling into God: Bonaventure on Grace, Hierarchy, and Holiness offers a systematic account of the Seraphic Doctor's doctrine of grace across his speculative-academic, mystical, hagiographical, and pastoral texts. It does so by arguing that an account of this kind can only be provided by also attending to his theology of hierarchy, a methodology derived from Bonaventure's claim in the Major Legend of St. Francis that Francis of Assisi was a "vir hierarchicus," or hierarchical man. As the book explores in great depth, this appellation relies upon Bonaventure's reading of a Victorine Dionysian interpreter by the name of Thomas Gallus, whose "angelic anthropology"--or notion of the hierarchical soul--becomes a crucial component within the Seraphic Doctor's teaching on grace as he interprets the sanctity of St. Francis. Throughout the course of his career, Bonaventure will define sanctifying grace as a created "inflowing" (influential) that "hierarchizes" human beings by purifying, illuminating, and perfecting them from within, thus causing them to become a similitude of the Trinity. This book explains what this means and why it matters. Most existing scholarship on this subject in Bonaventure's thought interprets it as a subtopic with respect to other themes--for example, with respect to his Christology or his Trinitarian theology--rather than taking the time to understand his doctrine of grace in its own right. Alternatively, scholarly treatments of his doctrine of grace will treat it at length, but will only examine the topic as it appears in his more speculative-academic texts--most especially his Commentary on the Sentences or his famous Itinerarium Mentis in Deum--without bringing these into conversation with his pastoral works, sermon literature, or hagiographical texts. Spiraling Into God provides the first unified treatment of Bonaventure's doctrine of grace across all these different genres of his known corpus, and in so doing, fills a massive lacuna in both Bonaventurean scholarship and in the field of medieval historical theology.

Book excerpt: Knowledge, Love, and Ecstasy in the Theology of Thomas Gallus provides the first full study of Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) in English and represents a significant advance in his distinctive theology. Boyd Taylor Coolman argues that Gallus distinguishes, but never separates and intimately relates two international modalities in human consciousness: the intellective and the affective, both of which are forms of cognition. Coolman shows that Gallus conceives these two cognitive modalities as co-existing in an interdependent manner, and that this reciprocity is given a particular character by Gallus anthropological appropriation of the Dionysian concept of hierarchy. Because Gallus conceives of the soul as hierarchized on the model of the angelic hierarchy, the intellect-affect relationship is fundamentally governed by the dynamism of a Dionysian hierarchy, which has two simultaneous trajectories: ascending and descending. Two crucial features are noteworthy in this regard: in ascending, firstly, the lower is subsumed by the higher; in descending, secondly, the higher communicates with the lower, according to the nature of the lower. When Gallus posits a higher, affective cognitio above an intellective cognitio at the highest point in the ascent, accordingly, this higher affective form both builds upon and sublimates the lower intellective form. At the same time, this affective cognitio descends back down into the soul, both enriching its properly intellective capacity and also renewing the ascending movement in love. For Gallus, then, in the hierarchized soul a dynamic mutuality between intellect and affect emerges, which he construes as a spiralling motion, by which the soul unceasingly stretches beyond itself, ecstatically, in knowing and loving God.

Book excerpt: PROLOGUE: AWAKENING TO THE SPIRAL PATH In the vastness of the cosmos, amidst the tapestry of stars and galaxies, there exists a sacred spiral. It is a path of enlightenment and self-discovery, a journey that leads us closer to the divine. This is the story of our awakening, the story of our spiral connection with God. In the depths of our souls, a longing stirs—a yearning to unravel the mysteries of existence, to find purpose and meaning beyond the mundane. We embark on a quest, driven by an inner fire that compels us to seek a deeper connection with the divine. The journey begins with self-reflection and intention, as we contemplate our beliefs, values, and desires. We set our sights on the divine horizon, seeking to align our lives with a higher purpose. With each step, we open ourselves to the unfolding mysteries, surrendering to the unknown. As we traverse the spiral path, we encounter the enigma of transcendence. We are humbled by the vastness of the divine and the limitations of our human understanding. We learn to embrace paradox, to dance with the duality of our existence, and to find solace in the ineffable. Love becomes our guiding light, as we immerse ourselves in the boundless ocean of divine love. We extend compassion and kindness to others, nurturing a unity that transcends boundaries and differences. Love becomes the foundation upon which we build our spiritual lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading has become a problem--not just of attention, comprehension, or growing rates of illiteracy, but of politics, society, and religion. The questions of how and what to read are not just matters of taste. Answers are often indicative of one's entire view of culture, church, and the cosmos, as well as the impasses of religion, reason, and moral vision. As a result, reading has become?divisive and uninspiring.?Reading has become a drag. The Mystified Letter offers?a hopeful alternative to this malaise--a?theology of reading?centered on mystical encounter. It retrieves medieval Christian reading culture to build a constructive case for a?mystical theology of literature.?? The?mystification?of literature in twelfth- and thirteenth-century monasteries and schools involved rhetorical, aesthetic, liturgical, and theological strategies that invested reading with a sense of ineffability and unintelligibility, wonder and awe, a disposition that applied not only to sacred but even secular literature. The Mystified Letter explores how litera (a Latin term meaning both "the letter" and "literature"?itself) came to be a site of the sacred. By showing how medieval theologians, especially the Victorine monks of Paris, came to see the letter as a vehicle for encounter with the unknowable, unspeakable, and illegible?God, The Mystified Letter shows how the practice of mystical reading can treat some of the spiritual ailments affecting both the?church and?the academy, and explores how we can foster reading cultures around the mystified letter today.

Book excerpt: USA TODAY, PUBLISHERS WEEKLY AND ECPA BESTSELLER • The internationally recognized Bible teacher and daughter of Billy Graham combines unique biblical insights and her own personal stories to show how the Holy Spirit guides us in our decisions, comforts us in pain, and stays by our side at all times, enriching our daily lives. In Jesus in Me, Anne Graham Lotz draws on her rich biblical knowledge as well as her personal journey—including her recent cancer diagnosis—to help us understand that the Holy Spirit is not a magic genie, a flame of fire, or a vague feeling. He is a Person who prays for us, guides us in our relationships and decisions, comforts us in pain, and stays by our side at all times. In this seminal teaching, she explores seven key aspects of the Holy Spirit that will revolutionize how you understand and relate to this vital third Person in the Trinity. As Anne writes, “One of my deepest, richest joys has been discovering by experience who the Holy Spirit is in every step of my life’s journey. Each name that He has been given—Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, and Standby—reveals another aspect of His beautiful character and has provoked in me a deep love for the One who is my constant Companion . . . Jesus in me.” Discover how to better love and rely on the person of the Holy Spirit—and embrace how much He loves you through His presence, power, and provision in our daily lives. Praise for Jesus in Me “With plentiful biblical references, Lotz encourages those who already rely on Jesus to step into a purpose-filled life led by the Holy’s Spirit’s guidance. Christians who desire to live a life of greater purpose to glorify God will be awed by Lotz’s impassioned exploration of the role of the Holy Spirit in her life.”—Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every group within Christianity has its own opinions on what Christianity really is. But who's right (if anyone)? With the letter to the Colossians, we have an opportunity to find an answer. Paul compares Christianity to another worldview and argues that Christianity is better. This book uses that comparison in order to understand Paul's Christian worldview. In this book, you will also find answers to some very difficult questions. 1.What is God's ultimate purpose for humanity? 2.Do we just do things because God told us to? 3.Why does Paul tell wives to obey their husbands? 4.Why does Paul tell slaves to obey their masters? 5.Why does God care what we do at all? 6.Why does God command these particular actions? 7.Why would we want to follow God's commands anyway? 8.How does following God's commands actually make us better people? Christianity is the point at which God acted through Christ to fix what was wrong with creation and bring the whole story to a different conclusion. In this book, you will see the big picture of Christianity and how all the dots connect--from start to finish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul proclaims in 90 percent of what he wrote that we have been set free, resurrected, and transformed through Christ at the behest of a loving God. This gospel proclamation can be found wherever he speaks of being "in Christ." But this gospel and its account of salvation has been captured by "another gospel," which also lays claim to being Paul's account of salvation. And this gospel is retributive, conditional, and ultimately damaging. "Justification Theory," as we call this false account, lays claim to just under 10 percent of what Paul wrote. The presence of both these gospels within Paul's interpretation causes numerous acute problems. He is, to name just a few, fundamentally confused, frequently harsh, and unavoidably anti-Jewish. If we reread Paul's justification texts, however, paying more attention to the original historical circumstances within which they were composed, then they turn out to say something subtly but significantly different. Paul's justification texts can be interpreted carefully, faithfully, and consistently, in terms of his usual gospel--our transformation in Christ. Thus Justification Theory is never activated. Paul's true gospel is thereby liberated from its long captivity to a false alternative. We can now see a kinder, gentler, and more consistent, apostle.
