Book excerpt: A Mother’s Journey of Love, Death, and Forgiveness By: Jackie Loret de Mola Jackie Loret de Mola’s life was changed forever on September 22, 2017 when her thirty-three-year-old son Frank’s car was hit from behind at a stop in traffic and he later succumbed to his injuries. This book is a collection of her day-to-day journal entries and social media posts that provide an intimate glimpse into the pain and disbelief she felt in the days and weeks that followed. Her raw emotions and thoughts and her forgiveness of the driver are an inspiring testament to the power of faith and love. Above all, A Mother’s Journey of Love, Death, and Forgiveness conveys the love that a mother has for her child. Frank Loret de Mola’s life blessed everyone around him, and as an organ donor, he blessed four very sick people. She hopes her book will inspire readers to consider organ donation and to consider the brevity of life and the importance of loving our families.

Book excerpt: After the sudden, undetermined death of her son, the author takes you through the journey of how this changed her life from day one to now, ten years after her son's death. The content of the book is intended to take you through healing in a in a positive manner, seeking your true purpose through such devastating life challenge. She was inspired to write this book through many who found hope and inspiration by witnessing her journey.Long Description | Sit back, grab a cup of coffee and read through this book of healing and hope written in a way that is "conversational". When a child dies suddenly, without any medical rationale, one is challenged to find ways to move through this journey. The questions of "why" have to turn into, let's make a plan on how we will get through this rather than focusing on something that has no answers. The I "can do this" is what made us learn to carry the oppressively heavy weight of such a loss. What is intriguing about this journey is that I learned it is indeed possible to get through it. In fact, life can be good, joyful and meaningful once again. It is up to us to find the good in our tragedy. We are grateful to be able to do this by the grace of God. Our Faith plays a huge role in our ability to find the best of what life has to offer.Finding my purpose in life came through the struggling and asking of "why" do I need to go through this. The "responses" simply seemed to be, because you can. Also, what has become clear is that my suffering is intended to help others. When we help others, we help ourselves. This suffering made me realize that I am far stronger than I ever thought I was, but it is through faith, prayer, family and friends that allows me to see through the darkness. It is my purpose to be a "light" for those who can't find it on their own. There is much to gain from being in such a storm and I have learned that when I'm feeling low, tomorrow will be a better day. The saying my son left for us "Live by Faith, One Day at a Time" has been the most powerful of reminders. We only have the day we are in, yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't here yet..live in the moment and we do so in the best way we can. Our minds are powerful tools, so we must find positives in our lives to carry us through. We have control of very little in life, but we have control over how we choose to handle the difficulties in life. My prayer for the readers is that they too will find their own purpose and ways to find joy in life despite the dark they may now see most of the time. Dealing with a profound loss is incredibly difficult, but we are stronger than our situations. I am here to tell you, this is so true. I would have never believed it myself. My hope is that if there is only one thing in this book helps you, it has accomplished all that it needed to. Reading my journal, which is how the content of this book came about, was very difficult yet it reminded me of where I was and where I am today, ten years later. It reminded me of why so many wanted me to write this in a book form. While I resisted the task for many years, timing is everything and coming up on the ten year anniversary of our son's reward to eternal life, the timing is good now.Shattered hearts never heal to be the same, but the pieces come back together little by little and results in the "new" you, the you that is intended to be if you can seek the lessons to learn from struggles in life and see the good in each and every one. Nothing we experience is made to break us, our experiences are intended to "make us" who we are meant to be.Be that pillar of strength for those who need you. Make good of your suffering and live your best life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 14, 2012, Scarlett Lewis experienced something that no parent should ever have to endure: she lost her son Jesse in an act of unimaginable violence. The day started just like any other, but when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Scarlett’s life changed forever. However, this isn’t a story about a massacre. It’s a story about love and survival. It’s about how to face the impossible, how to find courage when you think you have none, and how to choose love instead of anger, fear, or hatred. Following Jesse’s death, Scarlett went on an unexpected journey, inspired by a simple three-word message he had scrawled on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died: Norurting Helin Love (Nurturing Healing Love). It was as if he knew just what his family would need in order to go on after this horrible tragedy. Bolstered by his words, Scarlett took her first step toward a new life. And with each step, it became clearer how true Jesse’s message was. She learned that love was indeed the essential element necessary to move forward and that taking the path of love is a choice. We can live in anger and resentment, or we can choose love and forgiveness. With her decision made, she found some peace and began to believe that choosing love was the key to creating a healthy, safe, and happy world. She began the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation to develop programs to teach children about the power each of us has to change our thoughts and choose a life without fear and hate. Nurturing Healing Love is Scarlett’s story of how choosing love is changing her life—and how it could change our world.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is Dan Gemeinhart’s finest book yet — and that’s saying something. Your heart needs this joyful miracle of a book." — Katherine Applegate, acclaimed author of The One and Only Ivan and Wishtree Five years. That's how long Coyote and her dad, Rodeo, have lived on the road in an old school bus, criss-crossing the nation. It's also how long ago Coyote lost her mom and two sisters in a car crash. Coyote hasn’t been home in all that time, but when she learns that the park in her old neighborhood is being demolished—the very same park where she, her mom, and her sisters buried a treasured memory box—she devises an elaborate plan to get her dad to drive 3,600 miles back to Washington state in four days...without him realizing it. Along the way, they'll pick up a strange crew of misfit travelers. Lester has a lady love to meet. Salvador and his mom are looking to start over. Val needs a safe place to be herself. And then there's Gladys... Over the course of thousands of miles, Coyote will learn that going home can sometimes be the hardest journey of all...but that with friends by her side, she just might be able to turn her “once upon a time” into a “happily ever after.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grief Observed is a collection of Lewis's reflections on the experience of bereavement following the death of his wife, Joy Davidman, in 1960. The book was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk as Lewis wished to avoid identification as the author. Though republished in 1963 after his death under his own name, the text still refers to his wife as "H" (her first name, which she rarely used, was Helen). The book is compiled from the four notebooks which Lewis used to vent and explore his grief. He illustrates the everyday trials of his life without Joy and explores fundamental questions of faith and theodicy. Lewis's step-son (Joy's son) Douglas Gresham points out in his 1994 introduction that the indefinite article 'a' in the title makes it clear that Lewis's grief is not the quintessential grief experience at the loss of a loved one, but one individual's perspective among countless others. The book helped inspire a 1985 television movie Shadowlands, as well as a 1993 film of the same name. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, lay theologian and Christian apologist. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.

Margaret Wurtele's bow to her son, Phil, is a story we can all recognize within the context of each family's dance with death. Her words can heal the fall of a human heart." -Terry Tempest Williams, author of Refuge, Red, and Leap "Touching the Edge is an extraordinary memoir. Margaret Wurtele writes of the most painful events a parent can ever imagine, and yet she writes so honestly, so clearly, with prose as lucid and shimmering as cut crystal, that the book shines with a quiet grace. I too have a single grown child. I read this book and trembled. But I also saw, through Margaret Wurtele's eyes, a glimpse of the light that guided her through the darkness. It was a privilege to read this book." -Susan Allen Toth, author of Blooming: A Small-Town Girlhood and My Love Affair with England "I happened to be climbing on Rainier the day that Phil was killed, and I often wondered who he was, what he was like. Now, thanks to this beautifully told account, I have a very good idea. And I have an even clearer sense of what it means to be a parent, and a child of God. This book will choke you up, but the tears will be more than worth it." -Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and Long Distance: Testing the Limits of Body and Spirit in a Year of Living Strenuously "The experience of love and loss, when shared, can become the alchemy of a rebirth of the spirit in others. In this journey to the other side of grief, Margaret Wurtele is fearlessly true to her experience of loss and makes herself available to be an agent of transformation for her readers. This is the glory of the human story: we really are 'members of one another' whether we realize it or not." -Alan Jones, Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and author of Seasons of Grace, The Soul's Journey, and Living the Truth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My daughter Trisha left this world due to a reckless driver just one month short of her eighteenth birthday. Confusion, rage, anger, and denial became my new world. I felt alone, as if I were free falling for years. But my words are a sanctuary. My desire is to bring awareness to other parents who have lost children. My message is to convey to bereaved parents that they are not alone on this journey and their feelings are not only acceptable, but also normal. I hope to provide a forum in which those who suffer as I have can compare their feelings along with mine, can share in the same emotions I have, as we try to learn the best way to continue moving along in a world that for us can never be the same.
