Book excerpt: Texts in multiple versions constitute the core problem of textual scholarship. For texts from antiquity and the medieval period, the many versions may be the result of manuscript transmission, requiring editors and readers to discriminate between levels of authority in variant readings produced along the chain of copying. For texts of all periods, and particularly for more modern authors, there may also be multiple authorial versions. These are of particular importance for genetic criticism, as they offer a window on the author's thinking through the developing work. The different contexts in which multiple versions may occur - different languages, different genres, different cultures, ranging in this collection from ancient Greek texts to novels by Cervantes and Aub, dramatic texts from Portugal and Germany, poetry from The Netherlands and Lithuania, scientific texts from the 19th century - provide further layers of complexity. The histories of countries are reflected in the histories of editing. In Europe, this can be seen particularly in the great period of 'nation-building' of the 19th century. Essays in this volume survey editorial activity in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in the nineteenth century, concluding that nation building and scholarly editing are twinned. As a nation searches for its own identity, textual scholarship is pressed into service to find and edit the texts on which to establish that identity. The two strands of this volume (multiple versions of texts; editions and national histories) testify to the centrality of textual editing to many fields of research. There is material here for literary scholars, historians, and for readers interested in texts from Ancient Greece to modernist classics.

Book excerpt: Denis Florence MacCarthy was an Irish poet, translator, and biographer. Poems Published in Dublin by M. H. Gill and Son in 1882, an extensive collection edited by the poet's son.His poems are distinguished by a sense of harmony and sympathy with natural beauty. Such poems as "The Bridal of the Year," "Summer Longings" (alias "Waiting for the May"), and his long narrative poem, "The Voyage of St. Brendan," are among his most enduring works. The last-mentioned, which paraphrases the "Ave Maria Stella" as the evening song of the sailors, is also marked by the earnest religious feeling which marked its author throughout life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the soft sunny regions that circle the waist Of the globe with a girdle of topaz and gold, Which heave with the throbbings of life where they're placed, And glow with the fire of the heart they enfold; Where to live, where to breathe, seems a paradise dream A dream of some world more elysian than this Where, if Death and if Sin were away, it would seem Not the foretaste alone, but the fulness of bliss. Where all that can gladden the sense and the sight, Fresh fruitage as cool and as crimson as even; Where the richness and rankness of Nature unite To build the frail walls of the Sybarite's heaven. But, ah! should the heart feel the desolate dearth Of some purer enjoyment to speed the bright hours, In vain through the leafy luxuriance of earth Looks the languidlit eye for the freshness of flowers. No, its glance must be turned from the earth to the sky, From the clayrooted grass to the heavenbranching trees; And there, oh! enchantment for soul and for eye, Hang blossoms so pure that an angel might seize. Thus, when pleasure begins from its sweetness to cloy, And the warm heart grows rank like a soil over ripe, We must turn from the earth for some promise of joy, And look up to heaven for a holier type.

Book excerpt: How employable are you? If you are employed, it doesn't mean you are employable! Technology is escalating the rate of change in the workplace. Five years ago, would you ever have imagined holding meetings via Zoom, or having telephone or video appointments with your doctor? There are jobs now that we'd never heard of a decade ago. According to the World Economic Forum, 65% of children entering primary school today will end up working in new job types that aren't even on our radar yet. In our current times, knowing the attributes that make you employable will be imperative to your success. Employable: 7 Attributes to Assure Your Working Future delves into the seven most important traits that employers are looking for in today's competitive job marketplace. Each attribute is given a chapter that examines its facets, ending with a self-assessment for readers to gauge the state of their trait. Special chapters are included for those marking life milestones: graduates and school-leavers; parents returning to work; people considering retirement; those in midcareer or brushing themselves off after being sacked or made redundant. A practical section includes chapters on custom-building résumés and CVs, skilling up for interviews, writing compelling cover letters and honing the job search by using transferable skills across job clusters.
