Book excerpt: A quasi-objective method for deriving 500-mb geopotential heights with the aid of satellite cloud observations is presented. The method uses satellite-observed cloud patterns in conjunction with a forecast 500-mb height field which is separated into additive short- and long-wave component fields. Empirical relationships between the cloud patterns and the short-wave component field are used to modify the pattern of the latter, and regression equations are used to specify extrema values. The 500-mb heights are retrieved by the direct addition of the modified short-wavelength field to the long-wavelength field. Procedures for using this method operationally are presented, and results of real-time modifications can contribute to significant improvements in the analysis.

Book excerpt: This paper is an attempt to determine whether the areal windspeed distributions in tropical cyclones can be estimated by use of two satellite data parameters: (1) the low-level convective cloud band crossing angle relative to tangents to concentric circles centered on the eye, (2) the infrared temperatures from the 10.5-to-12.5 mu m channel. These two parameters plus the "ground truth" winds were all derived for 128 polar coordinate grid points (16 azimuths and 8 radii). Coincident values of the variables were evaluated statistically first by linear regression and afterward by multiple screening regression. For the entire storm area (all radii), the correlation between observed windspeed and the two satellite-derived parameters [(1) and (2), above] was 0.4 and -0.6, respectively. However, when evaluated at separate radii the two satellite parameters were poorly correlated to either the observed or relative windspeed. Radial distance from the storm center was found to explain 63% of the variance in windspeed. When this relation was removed by screen regression, the two satellite parameters could explain only an additional 2% to 3% of the variance. Correlation between the cloud band crossing angle and the wind field crossing angle was less than 0.5 at all radii. Correlation between the windspeed and the wind field crossing angle was less than 0.2. In both cases, the coefficients were lower than expected.
