Book Synopsis Genetic Mixed Stock Analysis of Upper Cook Inlet Coho Salmon Harvest, 2016 by : Andrew W. Barclay
Download or read book Genetic Mixed Stock Analysis of Upper Cook Inlet Coho Salmon Harvest, 2016 written by Andrew W. Barclay and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon support important commercial and sport fisheries in Upper Cook Inlet. The Upper Cook Inlet commercial fishery harvests an average of 167,372 fish annually (2007?2016). Genetic mixed stock analysis of coho salmon harvested in test and commercial drift and set gillnet fisheries of Upper Cook Inlet was first reported for 2013?2015 harvests. Here we report genetic mixed stock analysis results for the 2016 Upper Cook coho salmon harvest. Both spatial and temporal patterns in stock composition were observed in the offshore test fishery transect: higher proportions of Turnagain/Northeast CI on the Western end and Susitna and Knik on the Eastern end, and higher proportions of Turnagain/Northeast CI and Susitna in early July and Knik in late July. Samples represented 84% of the commercial coho salmon harvest in Upper Cook Inlet. Northern Cook Inlet coho salmon stocks Northwest CI/Yentna, Susitna, and Knik made up the majority of the harvest. In August in the Central District drift gillnet fishery, proportions of Northwest CI/Yentna increased and Susitna and Knik coho salmon decreased. In the Northern District set gillnet harvest, after about August 8, Northwest CI/Yentna, Susitna, and Knik stock proportions decreased and proportions of Turnagain/Northeast CI coho salmon increased. General Subdistrict (south) harvests were dominated by Susitna and Northwest CI/Yentna, General Subdistrict (north) harvests were dominated by Knik, and Eastern Subdistrict harvests were dominated by Turnagain/Northeast CI coho salmon. These and future Cook Inlet coho salmon commercial stock composition estimates will aid in the development of brood tables to establish escapement goals using spawner-recruit analysis, and provide data for annual run forecasts.

Book Synopsis Estimates of the Historic Run and Escapement for the Coho Salmon Stock Returning to the Kuskokwim River, 2000-2012 by : Kevin L. Schaberg
Download or read book Estimates of the Historic Run and Escapement for the Coho Salmon Stock Returning to the Kuskokwim River, 2000-2012 written by Kevin L. Schaberg and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) are the most heavily exploited salmon species in the Kuskokwim River. Information on total annual run size and subsequent returns are insufficient to model stock productivity, determine optimal harvest rates, and establish escapement goals that will provide for sustained yields. Total run of coho salmon to the Kuskokwim River from 2000 through 2012 was estimated using a maximum likelihood model developed for data-limited situations. The model simultaneously combined information on subsistence harvest, commercial harvest and effort, sport harvest, Bethel test fishery harvest and catch per unit of effort, mark-recapture estimates of inriver abundance, and counts of salmon at 6 weirs spread throughout the Kuskokwim River drainage.

Book Synopsis Smolt Abundance and Adult Escapement of Coho Salmon in the Taku River, 2022-2024 by : Jeffrey T. Williams
Download or read book Smolt Abundance and Adult Escapement of Coho Salmon in the Taku River, 2022-2024 written by Jeffrey T. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch smolt abundance and adult escapement will be estimated for the Taku stock of coho salmon originating from the Canadian portion of the Taku River, above the U.S./Canada border. This large glacial river flows into Taku Inlet about 30 km northeast of Juneau, Alaska. Multiple, independent sampling approaches will be used including coded-wire-tagging of smolt, adult harvest sampling, and an inriver adult mark–recapture experiment. A modified Petersen estimator will be used to estimate the smolt emigration during 2022–2024. A mark–recapture experiment will be used to estimate inriver runs of adult coho salmon in 2022–2024. Radio tags will be used to estimate the number of fish tagged during event 1 of the adult mark–recapture experiment that did not pass the U.S./Canada Border. Inriver harvest will be accounted for in determining escapement estimates for coho salmon annually. Scale samples of coho salmon will be used for age analysis to estimate annual age compositions. Coho salmon smolt will be systematically sampled to estimate the mean length for each species.
Book Synopsis Stock Assessment of Buskin River Coho Salmon, 2011-2013 by : Tyler Polum
Download or read book Stock Assessment of Buskin River Coho Salmon, 2011-2013 written by Tyler Polum and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Sport Fish (SF) has assessed the annual runs of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) to the Buskin River on Kodiak Island since 1985 via a weir on the Buskin River; the weir was moved to its current location in 1989. This report presents weir counts, harvest, and age-composition data collected between 2011 and 2013 as well as a spawner?recruit analysis. In 2011, the Buskin River weir count was 6,026 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 3,640; the reported subsistence harvest was 287; and the commercial harvest was 197 coho salmon. Age-2.1 fish composed 72% of the total run and the male to female ratio was 1.1:1. Estimated escapement was 5,298 coho salmon. In 2012, the weir count was 5,291 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 1,926; the reported subsistence harvest was 984; and the commercial harvest was 10. Age-2.1 fish composed 92% of the total run and the male to female ratio was 5.8:1. Estimated escapement was 4,906 coho salmon. In 2013, the estimated weir count was 5,959 coho salmon; the estimated sport harvest was 5,294; the reported subsistence harvest was 611; and the commercial harvest was 40. Age-2.1 fish composed 82% of the escapement and the male to female ratio was 0.93:1. Estimated escapement was 4,900 coho salmon. A full probability spawner?recruit analysis of all relevant data gave an estimated spawning escapement at maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of approximately 7,300 coho salmon (90% credibility interval of 5,140?12,000). Assuming a 10-year average sport harvest, the inriver run estimated for MSY is about 8,150 coho salmon and the estimated exploitation rate at MSY is 40%.
