Do you have conversations with people that leave you hurt and mulling over them for days? Do you find yourself justifying your actions to yourself very often? Do you kick yourself for something you think you shouldn’t have done or said? How is it that those we love the most somehow manage to bring out the worst in us? Essential TA: A Common Sense Psychology answers these questions and more. Delve into the analysis of all that connects us even when we’re baffled by how disconnected our lives and the world seems. Nothing in this world is pattern free. It feels good to be recognized, needed, and if possible even celebrated, since we’re the central hero in the story of our lives. However, why are some stories bleak and others exciting? How do we escape savagely tiresome ruts when we’re upstaged by relationships at home and work? Will we ever be understood? A handy guide to the compelling world of Transactional Analysis specifically written for those curious about what makes us tick and what makes a story stick!

Book excerpt: Psychology, like any other study, will be one that will continue to progress into the future. I see the world as it is, and I just don't think that there is anything that we can use, or study, without a healthy mind. Everything evolves around us. We are the cornerstones of the world. The old saying, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste", could carry less meaning than "The world is a terrible thing to waste". Seemingly being the next step forward in line with the preceding one. If we make what we feel is important to us, others, or the capital markets, our need to feel good about it fills the blank space or "means" with achievement. We all feel good about being needed. And; when we buy what we need, we appreciate what we want. Somehow, we lost sight of the simplicity of the past. Or, the appreciation of it. The personal stance we take with others needs to be driven with common interests. When common good embodies the focal point of any relationship, a positive circle has formed, and a substantive relationship is seeded to grow. Again, getting something done that you feel is important relays an expression of health. What we make is never as important as making something. The sense of feeling that comes from doing something we feel is important is often a step ahead. One that we may be tentative to make. It's not useful to me or anyone else for you to feel that way. Circling is a positive step that leads us forward through a "means" of expression. Again, what we do that we feel is important to ourselves, others, or the market sets an objective. Though the objective is important, the "means" of achieving it can jump start a more important objective; our frame of mind. When that is right, something else, in most cases is wrong. Within this offset, the trough behind us begins to make less sense and often dissipates over time. Striving to "do" often can lead us to "be". To feel right is priceless. To feel right about the world is even more expensive. How you contribute to making it a better place is just over the horizon.

Book excerpt: Common Sense Psychology: Common Sense Living combines academic psychology with real world living. The book explores why so many issues, particularly the nuances of race, must not be addressed at all or addressed in very particular and limiting manner. It illustrates how these limitations disadvantage the very people they are meant to protect. The author addresses specific psycho-social questions that are infrequently discussed in most milieus. Those matters include, inter alia, single parenting and its deleterious effects on both the parent and the child, human sexuality and its impact on our behavior, the current cultural disproportionally in our social interactions, work as a determinative force, religion, money and luck. Dr. Terry Thompson is a retired C.I.A. psychologist who spent 33 years with the C.I.A's super- secret Office of Security. Prior to his employment with the federal government he was a New York City police officer assigned to the South Bronx. He was also a child care director at a Catholic Charities home for children in NYC. He authored two prior books, A Cop's Justice, a novel published in 1995 and Why Espionage Happens, a non-fiction book published in 2009, exploring the fundamental motivational factors in espionage committed by the trusted insider.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologic is a formal system and relationship within which psychological processes are defined. The language people ordinarily use to formulate, think, and talk about psychological phenomena is organized by Jan Smedslund into a set of propositions aimed at identifying the generalities which underlie human behavior. In this way, psychologic illuminates the conceptual system of psychology embedded in ordinary language. This book continues Professor Smedslund's search for stable theoretical structures to explain the meanings that are part of all psychological investigation.

Written in 1949, this text seeks to explain how we come to believe in our common-sense world, and why, in spite of all philosophical criticism, we cannot help still believing in it. The aim is to show how we progressively build up the various constituents of that belief, and how those constituents tend to support and reinforce one another in a single, well-consolidated structure.
