Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that among Freud’s many contributions to the understanding of the normal and abnormal aspects of mental functioning, The Interpretation of Dreams stands alone and above all others. In this work published in 1900 Freud laid down the foundations of psychoanalytic theory as it was to develop throughout this century. This work not only unravelled the significance of the process of dreaming and allowed for the scientific understanding of the true meaning and nature of the mysterious world of dreams, but created the basis for a general theory of personality capable of encompassing within a single model both the normal and abnormal aspect of mental functioning. Originally published in 1969 Dr Nagera and his collaborators (all analytically trained) from the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic and Course (now the Anna Freud Centre) isolated from Freud’s work twenty-five basic concepts that they considered not only the cornerstones of Freud’s theory of dreams but fundamental pillars for the understanding of psychoanalytic theory generally. They include subjects such as dream sources, dream work, dream censorship, manifest content, latent content, condensation, displacement, symbolism, secondary revision and dream interpretation. They are presented in a condensed and concentrated manner containing all significant statements made by Freud at any point in his life on the subject of dreams, as well as tracing the historical development of his ideas wherever significant. References to the sources are given in all instances for the guidance of the student of psychoanalysis, the psychiatrist, the social worker, the psychologist or the scholarly minded reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams have captivated human imagination throughout the time. However, in the year 1900, dreams also gained an important place in psychotherapy when Sigmund Freud proposed that dreams were the royal road to the unconscious. The following book presents an overview of the history of dreams and discusses the shift from the use of latent content to that of the manifest content during dream analysis. Additionally, various methods of dream interpretation, the functions of dreams, differing schools of thought on the utility of dreams, typical dreams, and the biological challenge to dream theory are discussed. From antiquity, the universal phenomena of dreaming has captivated human imagination, confused human logic, and controlled human endeavors. Dreams have been regarded as very important, as messages from the gods, predictive of the future, expiatory of guilt, and the voice of conscience. Shamans, seers, and saints have used dreams to discern the source of sickness or to set the course of nations. Poets, philosophers, and playwrights have sought to plumb the depths of dreams in order to lure audience or readers into the world of fantasy, to play the strings of the emotions, and to recall the unthinkable. Cognitive, information processing, and neuroscientists find in dreams brain activity that can help understand REM, memory consolidation, and the unconscious state.

Book excerpt: After a hundred years of psychoanalysis, what has the psychoanalytic interpretation of dreams now become? Are what Simic calls "the films of our lives" still the royal road to the unconscious or do we now have a different concept both of dreams and of the unconscious? What is the meaning of dreams in the analytic dialogue? Do they still have a key role to play in clinical practice or not? These are just some of the questions that this book seeks to answer. Nowadays psychoanalysts and psychotherapists do not work so much on dreams as with dreams, preferring to emphasise their function of transformation and symbolic creation, rather than decipher their obscure messages. Dreaming is the way in which we give personal meaning to experience and expand our unconscious. As such, it is a necessary activity which, as Bion says, takes place both in sleep and in waking.

Drawing upon philosophy, anthropology, sociology, neurology, literature, and film criticism, the book offers a better understanding of the mysterious complexity and startling creative powers of human dreaming experience. For those interested in gaining new perspectives on dreaming, the powers of the imagination, and the newest frontiers in the dialogue between religion and science, Visions of the Night promises to be a welcome resource.

Book excerpt: The Dream Discourse Today offers an unrivalled synoptic view of key American, British and French papers on dream analysis in clinical practice. The purpose of the book is to show the reader different, well articulated perspectives, place them in historical context, and invite comparative reading. The cumulative effect of both papers and introductions is to leave the reader with an informed sense of the range of perspectives and a confidence in the continued relevance of dream analysis to practice, as some striking convergences in the implications of thinking drawn from very different approaches becomes clear. The Dream Discourse Today is the first historical and theoretical survey of its subject and the classic nature of the papers it includes will make it a first-class work of reference for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists of all schools, whether in practice or still training. It should be of especial interest to those who teach courses on the theory of technique, since the place of dream analysis is almost certain to be one of the central topics in such courses.

Book excerpt: For more than 20 years, Elizabeth Howard has worked with dreams and dreamers to enable each person to discover the secrets of their dreams. In The Dreamwork Papers, Howard introduces major theories and methods of dreamwork such as the work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. She describes her own work and her studies of the work of Frederick and Laura Perls and their formulation of gestalt therapy. She tells how to create a helpful dream journal and how to use the "magic cookie" as an aid to remembering dreams. Elizabeth Howard lives in Gainesville, Florida. She studied psychology, dreams and the gestalt approach with Vincent F. O'Connell, Ph.D. She has taught classes in the psychology of dreams in community college, offers lectures about dreams in the community, and facilitates individuals and groups centered on self-discovery through dreams. "I've been fascinated by dreams for years," she says. "I don't know of anything else that reaches so deep into the soul of the individual. Dreams can bring laughter and tears, but to me, in the end there always seems to be growth and moving on."

Book excerpt: As a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, Rubin argues that psychoanalysis is in need of revision in order to remain relevant today because its interest in both decoding and concealing the truth is simultaneously its strength and weakness. Rubin attempts a middle course between blind acceptance and premature dismissal. Although parts one and two focus on the history, institutions, and theory of psychoanalysis, the remainder constitutes a non-traditional and self-consciously experimental approach wherein the author reflects on his own work, his theoretical omissions, and the unsolved problems in his discourse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams told in the group are conjoint individual and group creations. They are both influenced by the group atmosphere and may in turn influence it and the individual, promoting change and development. Dreams have a deepening effect on therapeutic work and, due to their unconscious content, they may represent the most authentic exchange between individual and group. This state-of-the-art book provides help for therapists encountering a dream told in their group. It covers the major theoretical perspectives for their understanding, as well as representing different psychological schools and their approaches to the technical issues of group dream therapy. Despite the variety of sources, the clinical approaches described complement each other, and the book details many case studies, including a first dream in the group, an unconscious meeting between women and men, and other polarities within the individual and the group.

Book excerpt: Our dreams speak to us in a language all of us can learn. Eloquently written by the dream specialist of our age, Appreciating Dreams develops a comprehensive technique for exploring dreams in small group settings. The shared trust and safety of a group structure can stimulate creativity and imagination and help the dreamer find her or his way into the dream. This approach to understanding dreams shows how natural and effective dream work with groups can be. It is always exciting to help the dreamer hear what the dream is saying in its own true voice. "In Appreciating Dreams, Ullman continues to empower the dreamer, providing detailed instructions for laypeople who are motivated by a quest for mutual growth and self-understanding." - Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., Saybrook Institute "Appreciating Dreams makes available to people, not just patients, a supportive, protected method for establishing a living contact with our valuable inner experiences." - Milton Kramer, M.D., University of Cincinnati "Appreciating Dreams is a wonderful book. It is a complete handbook for dream group leaders and for anyone interested in working with dreams in a group." - Ernest Hartmann, M.D., Tufts University AUTHOR (or ORGANIZATION) BLURB [to appear on back cover]: MONTAGUE ULLMAN, M.D., is a New Yorker who attended Townsend Harris Hall, the City College of New York, and New York University School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree in 1938. Book excerpt: Hanna Segal's work, especially on symbolism, aesthetics, dreams, and the exploration of psychotic thinking, has established her as an outstanding figure in psychoanalysis, particularly in psychoanalysis of the Kleinian tradition. In Dream, Phantasy and Art she reworks her ideas on these topics and brings them vividly alive in a new integration which links them afresh to the work of Freud, Klein, and Bion. Throughout the book, the clinical illustrations the author has selected brilliantly spotlight the theory, touching the imagination, and fixing even the most difficult ideas permanently in the reader's mind. In a mutually enhancing relationship, theory and clinical example are combined, and then applied, to create the author's new and original theories of art and aesthetics. As Betty Joseph notes in her foreword, Segal's writing, and in particular this book, does much to enrich psychoanalysis not only because of the clarity and intelligence but also because of the depth and breadth of her interests and her clinical imagination.
