Book excerpt: LA PRESENTE ETUDE CONSTITUE UNE APPROCHE DE LA QUANTIFICATION DU RISQUE NATUREL LIE AUX MOUVEMENTS DE TERRAIN A PARTIR DE LA SIMULATION DES DONNEES DE SURFACE ET DE LA MORPHODYNAMIQUE DES VERSANTS. NOUS AVONS DEFINI LA TYPOLOGIE DES INSTABILITES DES VERSANTS ET EFFECTUE LEUR RECENSEMENT DANS LE SITE DE LA VILLE DE TAOUNATE (RIF, MAROC) AU COURS DE PLUSIEURS MISSIONS DE TERRAIN ET AVEC L'APPORT PERMANENT DE LA PHOTO-INTERPRETATION. L'ETUDE DETAILLEE DE LA PENTE TOPOGRAPHIQUE, DE LA LITHOLOGIE ET DE LA GEOMORPHOLOGIE NOUS A PERMIS DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE LES RELATIONS MUTUELLES DES CARACTERISTIQUES INTRINSEQUES DES TERRAINS INSTABLES. CES TROIS COMPOSANTES CADRENT LES INSTABILITES DES VERSANTS ET FORMENT LES FACTEURS DE RISQUE POUR LA CONTRIBUTION DE CET ESSAI METHODOLOGIQUE DE LA CARTOGRAPHIE DES RISQUES NATURELS. LA QUANTIFICATION DU RISQUE EST BASEE SUR DES CALCULS DE RAPPORTS DE SURFACES: EN RECHERCHANT LA PENTE LIMITE D'EQUILIBRE NATURELLE DE CHAQUE FACIES, EN CALCULANT LE DEGRES D'INSTABILITE DES FACIES (RAPPORT DES SURFACES INSTABLES SUR LES SURFACES TOTALES DES AFFLEUREMENTS), ET EN CLASSANT LES TYPES D'INSTABILITE EN FONCTION DES DEGATS OCCASIONNES OU QU'ELLES PEUVENT OCCASIONNER. NOUS AVONS DEFINI AINSI DES INDICES DE RISQUE SELON UNE ECHELLE NUMERIQUE. CETTE SYSTEMATISATION GRAPHIQUE NOUS A CONDUIT A TRANSCRIRE LES CARTES DE FACTEURS EN CARTES DE SIMULATION DU RISQUE (CARTES NUMERIQUES). LE RISQUE GLOBAL DE L'ACTION SIMULTANEE DES FACTEURS DETERMINANT A ETE EVALUE SELON DEUX TYPES: EVALUATION ARITHMETIQUE ET EVALUATION PROBABILISTE. LA COMPARAISON DE CES DEUX DEMARCHES FAIT RESSORTIR QUE L'APPROCHE PROBABILISTE DONNE UNE PRECISION DU NIVEAU DU RISQUE ET S'ACCORDE MIEUX AVEC SA DEFINITION. LA CARTE DES RISQUES NATURELS QUI EN RESULTE EXPRIME DES PROBABILITES D'APPARITION SPATIALE CLASSEES SUIVANT DES DEGRES DE RISQUES CROISSANT: FAIBLES D1, 0 A 10% ; MOYEN D2, 10 A 30 ; ELEVE D3, 30 A 50 ; ET TRES ELEVE D4, 50 A 100%

This book was released on 2001 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book presents most recent research studies on mapping and spatial analysis of socio-economic and environmental indicators used by various national and international contributors to regional development projects. It gathers the best contributions to the 1st International Conference on Mapping and Spatial Analysis of Socio-Economic and Environmental Indicators for the Local and Regional Sustainable Development. The conference was held in southern Tunisia, Tataouine in March 2015.The research studies focused on generating and analyzing indicators in various domains of Agriculture, Energy, Industry, Tourism, Transport, Urban Planning, Exploitation of Natural Resources, Infrastructure, Health, Environment, Education, Information and Communication Technologies, Social Affairs and Employability, and Culture and Sport. Socio-economic and environmental indicators are important in regional development plans and strategies as they allow to observe and analyze changes in the economic growth and to measure their impact on the environment and on social networks/daily life of citizens. On the basis of well-defined geomatic approaches, and particularly, through sophisticated digital mapping and spatio-temporal analyses, authors focused on retrieving indicators to evaluate the exploitation rate of natural resources, intensity of the energy consumption in various economic sector, net migratory flows, quality checking of the air in urban areas, adaptation to climate change, and vulnerability of the coastal domain and risk of marine submersion due to sea-level rise. The book is of interest not only to investors and contributors to regional development projects, but also to all relevant policy makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morocco is one of the most fascinating lands in the world from the point of view of its geological structure and evolution. Our knowledge on the geology of the country has been greatly improved during the last decades, based on numerous seismic profiles and boreholes, seismological analysis of focal mechanisms, seismic tomography, gravimetric/geodetic modelling and, on the other hand, based on a big National Program of Geological Mapping including modern geochemical analyses (trace elements) and reliable isotopic datings (39Ar-40Ar, U-Pb zircon, Sm-Nd, etc). Moreover, a number of academic studies have been performed in relation with the increasing number of Moroccan universities. Accordingly, there was an utmost urgency to undertake a new treatise of Moroccan geology which could substitute for the classical Eléments de géologie marocaine, published in 1976 by A. Michard in the Notes et Mémoires du Service géologique du Maroc (re-edited twice since 1976, with more than 6000 copies sold, and... translated in Japanese for engineers!). A new treatise has been prepared between April 2006 and July 2007 under the coordination of A. Michard, assisted by O. Saddiqi, and A. Chalouan, by a wide panel of authors from Morocco, France or Belgium among the best connoisseurs of the country. In order to emphasize the general interest of the book, we finally retain the following title: Continental Evolution: The Geology of Morocco. Structure, Stratigraphy, and Tectonics of the Africa-Atlantic-Mediterranean Triple junction. The editing and production of this book was supported by the following organisations: The Geological Society of France (SGF) The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco (ONHYM) The International Lithosphere Program (ILP)

Book excerpt: This second edition, like its predecessor, provides students with an integrated review of the basic knowledge and methods which form the foundation for advanced study. It also brings them information on the latest contributions to developments in the understanding of hillslopes. Since publication of the first edition, not only has knowledge advanced but an interdisciplinary approach to much of the research has become increasingly common and productive. These developments are reflected in this book by the threefold expansion of the bibliography and by the bringing together of the approaches and scientific knowledge from the contributing disciplines of geology, civil engineering, hydrology, soil science, ecology, and geomorphology to produce a comprehensive text which makes possible an integrated understanding of hillslopes. Approximately seventy per cent of the text is new, with many new figures and plates, which has enabled Professor Selby to provide a more comprehensive introduction than in the first edition to the nature of chemical bonding, the properties of mineral particles and fabrics of weak rock, rheology of rock and soil, hillslope hydrology, hillslope stratigraphy, and landslide hazard investigation.

Book excerpt: Soft computing is a consortium of computing methodologies that provide a foundation for the conception, design, and deployment of intelligent systems and aims to formalize the human ability to make rational decisions in an environment of uncertainty and imprecision. This book is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in 1996 on soft computing and its applications. The distinguished contributors consider the principal constituents of soft computing, namely fuzzy logic, neurocomputing, genetic computing, and probabilistic reasoning, the relations between them, and their fusion in industrial applications. Two areas emphasized in the book are how to achieve a synergistic combination of the main constituents of soft computing and how the combination can be used to achieve a high Machine Intelligence Quotient.

Landslides are a constant in shaping our landscape. Whether by large episodic, or smaller chronic, mass movements, our mountains, hills, valleys, rivers, and streams bear evidence of change from landslides. Combined with anthropogenic factors, especially the development and settlement of unstable terrain, landslides (as natural processes) have become natural disasters. This book charts our understanding of landslide processes, prediction methods, and related land use issues. How and where do landslides initiate? What are the human and economic consequences? What hazard assessment and prediction methods are available, and how well do they work? How does land use, from timber harvesting and road building to urban and industrial development, affect landslide distribution in time and space? And what is the effect of land use and climate change on landslides? This book responds to such questions with: • Synopses of how various land uses and management activities influence landslide behavior • Analyses of earth surface processes that affect landslide frequency and extent • Examples of prediction techniques and methods of landslide hazard assessment, including scales of application • Discussion of landslide types and related costs and damages Those who study landslides, and those who deal with landslides, from onset to after-effects—including researchers, engineers, land managers, educators, students, and policy makers—will find this work a benchmark reference, now and for years to come.
