Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1806 an anxious crowd of thousands descended upon Lenox, Massachusetts, for the public hanging of Ephraim Wheeler, condemned for the rape of his thirteen-year-old daughter, Betsy. Not all witnesses believed justice had triumphed. The death penalty had become controversial; no one had been executed for rape in Massachusetts in more than a quarter century. Wheeler maintained his innocence. Over one hundred local citizens petitioned for his pardon--including, most remarkably, Betsy and her mother. Impoverished, illiterate, a failed farmer who married into a mixed-race family and clashed routinely with his wife, Wheeler existed on the margins of society. Using the trial report to reconstruct the tragic crime and drawing on Wheeler's jailhouse autobiography to unravel his troubled family history, Irene Quenzler Brown and Richard D. Brown illuminate a rarely seen slice of early America. They imaginatively and sensitively explore issues of family violence, poverty, gender, race and class, religion, and capital punishment, revealing similarities between death penalty politics in America today and two hundred years ago. Beautifully crafted, engagingly written, this unforgettable story probes deeply held beliefs about morality and about the nature of justice.

Book excerpt: Maria Villanueva is still unhappy that her brother was taken from her and put into a foster home—which was really a boys’ ranch—four and a half years before. When she finishes her education, she moves to the town closest to his location to start a business and be close to her brother. She expresses her unhappiness for the situation with one of the brothers running the ranch, and he makes sure she spends more time there to see what the ranch is really like. Ephraim McClain knows within minutes of meeting Maria that she is the woman he’s destined to spend his life with. He offers her the first client for her new business, and does his best to make sure she’s always around him. As they get to know one another, he loses his heart. Will she be able to understand that the ranch is a good place? Or will she continue to battle with her feelings for him?

She concludes that a poetic, eschatological posture should dictate the church’s shape today.

He is perhaps the most influential of all Syriac authors; and his fame as a poet, commentator, preacher and defender of orthodoxy has spread throughout all branches of the Christian Church. This reputation he owes partly to the vast fertility of his pen - according to the historian Sozomen he was credited with having written altogether 3,000,000 lines - partly to the elegance of his style and a certain measure of poetic inspiration, more perhaps to the strength and consistency of his personal character, and his ardour in defence of the creed formulated at Nicaea.

Book excerpt: For the first time in a stand-alone edition, the acclaimed poet's classic poem about his communication with Ephraim, a guiding spirit in the Other World, is here introduced and annotated by poet and Merrill scholar Stephen Yenser. "The Book of Ephraim," which first appeared as the final poem in James Merrill's Pulitzer-winning volume Divine Comedies (1976), tells the story of how he and his partner David Jackson (JM and DJ as they came to be known) embarked on their experiments with the Ouija board and how they conversed after a fashion with great writers and thinkers of the past, especially in regard to the state of the increasingly imperiled planet Earth. One of the most ambitious long poems in in English in the twentieth century, originally conceived as complete in itself, it was to become the first part of Merrill's epic The Changing Light at Sandover (1982), the multiple prize-winning volume still in print. Merrill's "supreme tribute to the web of the world and the convergence of means and meanings everywhere within it" is introduced and annotated by one of his literary executors, Stephen Yenser, in a volume that will gratify veteran readers and entice new ones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ephraim. The Gentile Children of Israel" traces the Lost Ten Tribes to the British Isles, North America, Australia, and related areas. Sources used include the Bible, Midrashim, other Rabbinical texts, and secular sources. Descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel in the Aggregate have certain national characteristics that allow us to confirm their Israelite ancestry. The pertinent criteria for determining Israelite origins are discussed. Jewish Traditions in Arab Lands traced the Ten Tribes to France and Britain. The same applies to the Sons of Moses and the Rechabites both of whom, in Jewish tradition, were also associated with the Ten Tribes and located in the same areas. Australia and New Zealand are the Land of Sinim which is one of the areas it was prophesied the Ten Tribes would be found in towards the End times (Isaiah 49:12). Rabbinical sources trace the Lost Ten Tribes to three major areas. We identify the areas in question and show how these identifications confirm the Lost Ten Tribes being now found among western peoples. A turning point in the history of England was marked by the Tudor Monarchs. Henry-7 (1457-1509) adopted the Tudor Rose as his symbol and it still is in official usage as representative of the monarchy and of Britain. The Tudor Rose with its red and white petals was described as representative of Israel in the opening pages of the Zohar which a major Rabbinical spiritual treatise. Traditional names for the Isles of Britain and Ireland are those applied to the place of Exile of the Ten Tribes in Rabbinical sources. The Maharal (ca. 1512-1609) was an outstanding Rabbinical authority whose authority is acknowledged by all present day Orthodox Rabbinical authorities. An analysis of the same sources we use by the Maharal confirms our findings and also points to America as the major center for the Ten Tribes in the End Times! Rabbinical sources concerning the Lost Ten Tribes are compared to Welsh and Irish traditions. They complement and affirm each other. Recent Rabbinical scholars, who were also great men in their own right and still are amongst the most revered authorities, have considered in the past the role of the Ten Tribes in the coming Redemption. Their observations are pertinent to all of us today.
