It was at this time that learned medicine came to be fully incorporated into the academic system and began to win greater social acceptance. Joseph Ziegler argues that physicians and clerics did not confine the role of medicine to its physical therapeutic function, and that fusion rather than disjunction characterized the relationship between medicine and religion at that time. Much of this argument relies on language analysis and on a close study of unedited manuscript sources. By juxtaposing the spiritual writings and the medical output of two learned physicians — Arnau de Vilanova (c. 1238-1311) and Galvano da Levanto (fl. 1300) — Dr Ziegler shows that they saw a medical purpose, namely to ensure the spiritual health of their audience and to reveal the mysteries of God and creation. When entering the spiritual realm, both brought to it a medical framework and extended their medical knowledge and curative activities from body to soul. By examining preachers' manuals and sermons, the author suggests that a growing tendency emerged among clerics in general and preachers in particular to appropriate current medical knowledge for spiritual purposes and to substantiate their extensive use of medical metaphors, analogies and exempla by citing specific medical authorities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this treatise is: 1) to draw attention to the presence of situations arising within medical practice in which religious beliefs play an important role. 2) to emphasize the fact that most students and many doctors are given insufficient training in such matters, which are of considerable import to a fair percentage of the public. 3) to provide a few examples of what is meant by a religio-medical situation, and a bibliography for further exploration by the initiate in such matters. The stimulus to think along these lines stemmed from the examples set me by my erstwhile chiefs', Sir James Patterson-Ross, Professor Sir E. F. Scowen and Sir Stanley Davidson. Further encouragement came while I was in Edinburgh from the Reverend Dr. H.C. Whitley of St. Giles and his brother counterparts Msgr. Quill and the Reverend A. Brysh-White. In Australia, Bishop E.H. Burgmann of Canberra gave me the benefit of his legendary experience and passed me on to Father Michael Scott of Newman College, Professor D. McCaughey of Ormond College and Mr. Ben Gurewicz in Melbourne. The Reverend Granger Westberg of the Lutheran ministry in the United States infused his enthusiasm into the venture and this, with an intellectual commentary from Professor B. Hamnett of the State University of New York, along with the constructive critique volunteered by members of the local Baha'i community, tidied up many loose ends. In respect to the actual page-by-page construction I must mention my wife and Professor G. Bolton of the University of Western Australia who turned my thoughts into reality. My gratitude to these and many other people of distinction and industry can never be satisfactorily expressed. I hope they will accept my efforts to interpret or to pass on their humane counsel as part payment.

Book excerpt: In 1705-1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession and two years after a devastating earthquake, an ’epidemic’ of mysterious sudden deaths terrorized Rome. In early modern society, a sudden death was perceived as a mala mors because it threatened the victim’s salvation by hindering repentance and last confession. Special masses were celebrated to implore God’s clemency and Pope Clement XI ordered his personal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, to perform a series of dissections in the university anatomical theatre in order to discover the 'true causes' of the deadly events. It was the first investigation of this kind ever to take place for a condition which was not contagious. The book that Lancisi published on this topic, De subitaneis mortibus (’On Sudden Deaths’, 1707), is one of the earliest modern scientific investigations of death; it was not only an accomplished example of mechanical philosophy as applied to the life sciences in eighteenth-century Europe, but also heralded a new pathological anatomy (traditionally associated with Giambattista Morgagni). Moreover, Lancisi’s tract and the whole affair of the sudden deaths in Rome marked a significant break in the traditional attitude towards dying, introducing a more active approach that would later develop into the practice of resuscitation medicine. Sudden Death explores how a new scientific interpretation of death and a new attitude towards dying first came into being, breaking free from the Hippocratic tradition, which regarded death as the obvious limit of physician’s capacity, and leading the way to a belief in the 'conquest of death' by medicine which remains in force to this day.
